Here Today... Gone To Hell!

I'm hitting up all four countries in a month.  I got about 3 weeks.  Planning on spending just a couple of days in Amsterdam, just under a week in Portugal (maybe 4 days tops) and split the rest of the time in Italy and Spain.

Any suggestions/recommendations/advice on where to go, what to see, what to eat, etc???

Only things I know for sure is that i'm going to Milan and Rome and Barcelona.  Everything else is up for debate at the moment.

You should hit Venice...interesting place, and Florence as well. 

But you should also go AFTER CD comes out, and then you can have the Pope bless your copy.  :hihi:

Yeah Venice is stunning too.   It's worth keeping in mind that Europe has fantastic rail service.

If you're from the US, these trains are a little bit like the "trains" that we have in North America.  Except that they're clean, fast, comfortable and reliable.

But wherever you go, if you don't travel a lot you MUST take steps to protect your personal documentation.  Leave a photocopy of your passport and ID with someone at home.  Don't carry your passport somewhere that you can easily have it lifted.   If your room has s safe, use it.  I travel a fair bit and I tend to be a little paranoid about my documents, yet I was seconds away from having my passport and cash lifted from me on a train in Rome.  The only saving grace was that I heard the velcro pouch opening up. 

def good advice, I've taken some overnight trains in europe before and I always more or less strap my money/documents to my chest before I go to sleep ;)

I could stay in Italy alone for a month... So much to see there. 

If you're going to Southern Europe, how come you're going to Amsterdam?


I could imagine at least one reason why Americans wanna stop there, but....

I've been to Amsterdam, you'll probably be able to see everything in the city worth seeing within 2-3 days.

 

I assume it could be easy to get sidetracked while in Amsterdam and the snack budget would increase tremendously  :hihi:

Don't take any "souvenirs" on the train leaving Amsterdam.

Fair warning.

I'd say 1 day would be enough. Hookers and weed. After that it's nothing special.

Prague, London, Paris, Rome...those are the cities for seeing.

Even still, 'Dam got that great freedom feeling. After being there you think to yourself..."why isn't every country like this?".

How about Anne Frank's house, the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, the canals?

Rome for me is the best city in Europe. Take it all in coz i think its a special place.

Anne Frank's house? Come on. That's for the special interest.

The museums are good, but then again nothing special. You'll find similar stuff in every major European city.

Point being, what's special to Amsterdam is the hookers and the drugs. Like architechture is to Prague and Rome.

It all depends on what you're looking for.

I've only been to the other side of the pond two times before this new trip and that was to Munich/Prague and to Ireland.  London and Paris I want to do separately.  Can't wait for Rome.  I could probably spend my entire time there and not be bored.  The history and architecture.... I can't wait.

Dying to go back to SE asia too.  Man, to have enough money/time to travel the world.  Would be so amazing.

Visit Barcelona over Madrid, Venice is a cool place. Take the number 2 water bus for a quick tour, don't stop for a drink in St Marks square if there are orchestras playing (they charge you for watching them), don't feed the pigeons. Rome is worth a visit, Milan is not worth it unless you have lots of time. Amsterdam is a cool place, cakes are stong  :hihi:

Yes, I'm aware that they have museums with painting in many cities.

But they also have hookers and coffee shops in other Dutch cities.....

I enjoyed visiting the Anne Frank house. I don't think I fully appreciated the story of Anne Frank until I got older.

Anne Frank House is not a special interest item. It's a historical landmark. It shouldn't only appeal to a few groups of people. Everyone should go to it if they are in the area.

Maybe it's more interesting after a few of Mysteron's cakes?  :hihi:
