now that we have the tracklist and we have at least 10 outta 14 songs we can try and find out what they'll chose for the first single.

From all the songs i've heard i think better stands off completly, too bad it's kinda dated at this point, so it's either that or one of the new ones, even though i'd love to see a video for all of them.

We heard them in 06 due to leaks.. but! you weren't supposted to download those leaks remember. and you did anyway so that's your own fault..

to people outside the gnr community..  They hav never heard new songs... prob just blues and maddy and old CHidem. but nothing more.

i must say ive heard chinese democracy evolve over thelast 7 years and i have to say its pretty kick as now, love the intro cant wait to hear the master

better. It already leaked to the radio last year or whenever that was and its an awesome song

yeah it's the one that have worked the best with my friends and most likely best "commercial" of the songs we've heard..

it's not my favourite but my favourite on AFD (RQ) was no single.. same with the my favourites on the other records..

If they are releasing a single, you would think they would be shooting the video for it now.

Am I the only one that thinks 'The Blues' would be an awesome first single?

It's an amazing song, and the style of music is nothing like what's out there today....

As for what I believe WILL be the first single, I would say 'Better', which is also a great song, which has mass appeal.

i think it should definately be chinese democracy as it may not be the best song on the album(though it is ridiculously awesome anyway)but has the most potential as a single bc its heavy and displays their new sound very well imo. a good introduction to people who arent as devoted or have never been a fan.

Blues and madagascar are both great songs but they're ballads and the first single has to be a rocking song imo then I would imagine a ballad would be next, and I really want the first single to be better bc it has great comercial appeal. Ive played the song for many ppl and they all love it gnr fans or not. Also imo SR is terrible and I really hope it isnt a single

I think the finished version will be stunning, it has enough rock, enough ballad and enough originality in it to capture peoples attention to the all new Guns N'Roses.
As Axl once said, it expresses his sentiments.  I think its his perfect statement on his return.

hmmm IRS? l  think  it  wud  work well with the general public. Its catchy and  imo what casuals expect from GNR,  not that its my favourite but thats my opinion

I hope a song we already know it as the single. A finished Better or Shackler's Revenge would be the best options

Better ! it's the best song i've heard of all the new one's and it has the potential to probaly be the biggest song off the album.  GnR first single in 14 years needs to be a bang and its BETTER.

I hope it would be Better, Chinese Democracy, and TWAT.  TWAT is probably the most epic, but who knows what the other songs sound like

I can't really say since we haven't heard Sorry, Scraped, This I love, and we are not sure if we have heard Street of Dreams, and Prostitute. However I would love to have Catcher in The Rye, or Catcher as its shown here released at some point as a single.

Is it a coincidence that Better is so popular, and that Axl sounds more like W. Axl Fucking Rose on that song than any of the other songs we have heard?

Does anyone have the interview where Axl first talks or mentions this song? Isn't it suppose to be like the third part of NR and Estranged or something?

I'm going with Better. Ever since WAAF played the leaks, when I mention Chi-Dem around people that aren't die-hard fans, they tell me they heard that song and they liked it.

I don't think "Shackler's Revenge" and "If the World" could be contenders for a single since they've already been 'released' in a promotional sense.

I'd say the first single could possibly be either "Madagascar", "Better" or "Scraped/Lies They Tell".

I think alot of people are familiar with "Madagascar" from VMAs etc and has good feedback.

"Better" seems to have the most potential as a radio friendly, catchy, melodic straight ahead rock song.

"Scraped/Lies They Tell" I considered since it could be a hard rocker if they've slated it in between the title track and "Shackler's Revenge". And nobody's heard it before either..

Better is the best overall single but that doesn't mean it has to be the lead single.  Personally I think that it's best to release your best single second

Obviously haven't heard the song, but I like the sound of Scraped just based on the fact that it's a Buckethead song.  That combined with the title leads me to believe that it could be a real heavy, in your face song.  I think the best idea would be to release something heavy and aggressive for the lead single so they can let people know they're back

So, I would say (if it's a heavy, aggressive song) release Scraped because nobody has heard it.  Otherwise, lead off with Chinese.  Better for the second single.

What's interesting is that they have a lot of singles that could get airplay on different formats.  CD, IRS, Rhiad, Shackler's would go over well on rock radio.  If The World and The Blues could both be hits on pop/mainstream stations. 

Better would get airplay on all of the above which makes it the best overall single but I would still lead off with something else more aggressive

I believe he mentions it in either the 1999 Kurt Loder interview or the 2000 Rolling Stone interview

Patti Hood, who plays harp on the song, said it was one of the most beautiful songs she'd ever heard, based on that description it sounds like another Axl piano epic

I think as far as a radio-friendly single goes, "Better" is probably the most obvious choice.

I'd personally like to have "Sorry" be the leadoff single, given that Baz has commented on it being a really heavy song.

Better.  No song says "We're back" like this one, especially when the first verse kicks in.

Out of what we know, 'Better' is the obvious choice. It appeals to a mass audience. For selfish reasons, I'm wanting it to be 'Scraped' or 'Sorry', something we haven't heard, but I'd be tickled pink with 'Better'. I think 'Madagascar' deserves to be the second single, though...

Scraped... because is a song we never hear before n' was registered in that site n' also was named in the article of the Rolling Stones... but that just speculation (I don't even know if is a rocker or a ballad)

From the songs we've heard I think the first single needs to be a powerful rocker song n' second one a great beautiful ballad... n' my votes are 1? Better n' 2? Catcher

They must be aware of the positive attention it has received on the internet (chat boards, youtube, etc.) and in Rolling Stone magazine (when they reviewed the leaks). I just think it's one of those things where they don't want to spend the rest of their lives thinking... "Hmmm.... I wonder if it would have turned out differently if we had led off with 'Better'". That's certainly how I would look at it. The first single needs to be a punch to the jaw of the music industry... "Better" is that IMHO. :drool:

Yeah, I'd agree too. I'm also pretty sure that after I buy the album, I'm not going to play it from the start and listen to a mastered Chinese Democracy tune, but rather that I'm going to listen to Sorry - and I mean  immediately

Madagascar has still been going strong for almost 8 years now and I can honestly say, I have never grown tired of it at any point.

It still gives me chills today like it did when I heard it at Rock In Rio 3.

I honestly can say it has been my favorite of all the songs we've heard.

I like 'Better'...however, I've always felt that it's lacking just a bit. It's got some great musical and vocal hooks, but I really don't get into the chorus as much as I do with other hit GN'R singles. 'Better' reminds me more of  'Dead Horse'...great song, I really dig it, but pale in comparrison to other singles.  YCBM was and is far better IMO and rightly deserved to be the front runner single off the Illusion albums. Like 'Dead Horse', 'Better' could serve as a good third or fourth single (if we get that many) and help maintain CD's momentum until the next album is released...but I just don't see it as THE SONG to reintroduce this band to the world with.

I personally hope this new song, 'Scraped' is a killer rocker and is the first single. Though I don't like some of the 'noise' in 'Shackler's Revenge', I think the chorus is killer and if 'Scraped' was saved from public knowledge all this time (like 'Shackler'), perhaps it's got some of the same balls to it.

Here's my prediction (or, perhaps hope) for the order of single releases:

1. Scraped
2. This I Love
3. Madagascar (or Catcher)
4. Better
5. There Was a Time

That's over a year's worth of singles...hopefully CD: pt. 2 will be ready for release when this has run it's course.



Oh...and last thought to all those who are dissapointed in the tracklisting because you've heard (or think you have heard) 2/3 or it. I'd be willing to bet that on the next tour you're going to start hearing a few more tunes from the next two albums worth of material...so fear not...the avalanche has only begun  : ok:

I think Catcher is an amazing song, I cannot wait to hear what a studio finished version will sound like.  I wonder if Brian May will stay on it or if Axl has replaced it?

It has to be Better, and I hope it's exactly the same as the demo. Then again, it could be one of the three we haven't heard.  Though it's hard to imagine anything being better than "Better".

probably better since it gets the best internet buzz but i personally feel IRS would do better for the general radio audience and their perception of gnr, best link from old sound to new

It has the catchiest title. Plus, it's fkn epic! Related to NovRain and Estranged, has a long and deep story, would make an interesting video. Wasn't the plan in 1998-1999 for this song to be the first single?

I think Better is my favorite, but as far as singles go i would liketo see several from the album like in the UYI days, they prob had them palnned in a certain order. my personal plan would be

Better is the obvious single.. and would slaughter all radio, rock or pop. Easily.

The other songs, while mostly all truly great, are not radio friendly in terms of them being GNR's first released single after 15 years or whatnot.

As far as video goes, a straight 'performance' video of the band ripping would be bullseye: "Here we are, this is us and this is what we sound and look like. Now, shut up or get onboard! Your choice."

Imagine if the NFL picks up (og GNR/record company sell/deal them) 'Better' and they use it for programming. For the NFL regular season last games and then.. the playoffs.

Most stadiums in the NFL blast WTTJ at every game and sometimes SCOM, PC and YCBM too.

Just a thought.
