Title: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: troccoli on October 03, 2008, 10:32:25 PM Well, for those of you who cannot afford the MFSL cds (or don't want to open the ones they have ;-)), here is some good news. According to the site eil.com (a reputable website), Appetite, Lies, The UYI albums, and TSI are all going to get released as SHM-CDs (Super High Material CD) in Japan on December 3, 2008. Time to save money (again). Woohoo!
Edit: Changed subject to avoid confusion... /jarmo Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: suicide on October 04, 2008, 01:15:18 AM Sounds very interesting. For those, like me, unfamiliar with SHM-CDs:
The high quality SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) format features enhanced audio quality through the use of a special polycarbonate plastic. Using a process developed by JVC and Universal Music Japan discovered through the joint companies' research into LCD display manufacturing, SHM-CDs feature improved transparency on the data side of the disc, allowing for more accurate reading of CD data by the CD player laser head. SHM-CD format CDs are fully compatible with standard CD players. But damn... I can't stop thinking how much money I'm going to spend when CD comes out, and I'll probably need lots of money for this as well... I'll buy them straight from Japan, eil is a good site but a bit expensive... Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: Limulus on October 04, 2008, 06:24:45 AM big quality question is:
are those ones sourced from the master tracks directly, like a "new transfer" or do they take the existing cds and equalize the hell out of it for this format? Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: gcluskey on October 04, 2008, 06:59:12 AM Does this mean if I transfer the new cds onto my laptop and onto my ipod that it'll play the tracks better than it does currently?
Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: Allman on October 04, 2008, 07:57:10 AM Does this mean if I transfer the new cds onto my laptop and onto my ipod that it'll play the tracks better than it does currently? Not if you transfer them into MP3 or any other lossy formats. You'll hear the difference on a good stereo set. Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: jarmo on October 04, 2008, 10:47:56 AM I wouldn't expect any huge differences in audio quality. It's still a CD.
Probably not remastered? /jarmo Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: russkwtx on October 05, 2008, 12:00:13 AM The Japanese are always coming up with cool technology shit that makes us buy the same music over and over. it's like some kind of capitalist conspiracy, if I believed in that sort of thing. ;)

Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: jarmo on October 05, 2008, 06:20:44 PM I'd save my money until they're remastered. The ironic thing is that remastering can also ruin the sound. :-\ /jarmo Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: troccoli on October 06, 2008, 12:23:50 AM Where to get 'em cheap (reasonably):

HBK * Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: Limulus on October 08, 2008, 09:22:35 AM smells a lot like milking the AFD-fans again for $$$$$$$!
big possibility is that those upcoming discs are just ripped from the existing cds and equalized as hell making them much louder than before which is kinda norm these days but qualitywise inferior in general, there is a cool youtube-clip about these "loudness war": http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gmex_4hreQ Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: The Estranged MrFlashbax on October 08, 2008, 09:31:05 PM (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a51/shotgunblues/untitled.jpg)

Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: cotis on October 08, 2008, 09:45:22 PM Quote The past CD material that Universal Music and Victer develop is new high sound quality CD to which the transparency is improved in addition by using the polycarbonate resin of the liquid crystal panel usage of the variety. So...I guess it's just higher quality? I'm not a pro on this, don't really do CD's. Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: Howard2k on October 08, 2008, 10:05:02 PM It's a higher quality CD.
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/music/essentials/shm-cd.html But if it's not re-mastered I'm not sure I'd bother. Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: Limulus on October 09, 2008, 10:02:58 AM again:
keep in mind its probably only extracted from the allready existing cds not new transfers from the single master tracks! reasons: no official word from the gnr camp about it. and its a japanese only release and those japanese re-re-releases mainly have been proven to be made for $$$ only. the "only-1-month"-order backs this up, too. this also would mean the circulating cds used still are the best sources for us not any equalized and edited $$-release. about remastering i also posted some stuff above. Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: suicide on October 09, 2008, 11:38:39 AM I wish they would release the Use Your Illusion albums in surround. Some or even most of the tracks were recorded in Q-sound so they've got the sources.

Non-technical...will I hear the difference??? What justifies the $40 price?

Title: Re: Appetite, Lies, UYI, and TSI re-released as Super High Material CDs in Japan Post by: Pandora on November 25, 2008, 01:58:52 PM All I can tell you is that on Chinese Democracy, the bitrate is exactly the same as on a regular record. So if there's a difference, I'd like to know where it's hidden.....
