Title: What female artist would make a good duet w/ Axl?
Post by: burnz007 on September 22, 2008, 08:31:02 PM
So I was leaving work, listening to Better and I started thinking about how that rolling stone critic did his quasi-review of the leaked tracks and how he thought that there was a girl singing  in the beginning of Better.  Then it occurred to me that, as far as I know, Axl never did a duet / dueling vocals song w/ a female singer... and I thought it could possibly be pretty cool if it were the right person...So... what living (so no Janis Joplin) female singer do u think could pull of song w/ Axl ?  Some-one who has a similar vocal style or one that compliment Axl's.

-Mike

something on the loud side: Joan Jett

something on the acoustic side: Lucinda Williams

And c'mon, on the dead side, forget Janis Joplin. WENDY O. WILLIAMS.  PLASMASTICS.

Then it occurred to me that, as far as I know, Axl never did a duet / dueling vocals song w/ a female singer...

wasn't there a female singer on the Just Another Sunday demo?

Fiona Apple

Fiona is the most obvious choice since Axl has gone on the record as saying he enjoyed her music.  Granted that was about 9-10 years ago...but...  Also at the VMA's he seemed quite taken w/ Christina Aguilera's singing abilities, so...you never know.    My preference would be more of an "unknown" like Nellie McKay or Erin McKeown.

Definetly... most of the women mentioned here are pop artist... I would like to hear some old school kick ass duet. Patti Smith's "Twelve" is one of the best covers album that I remember (with TSI? of course  ;)) Their version of Rolling Stones of Gimme Shelter kick many asses... I would love hearing Axl n' Patti alive singin' Gimme Shelter... that could turn my skin into a chicken one  :hihi:

When I first saw the topic, I didn't like the idea of a duet with any female singer, but you have sold me!
Patti Smith and Axl covering the Stones, tough to find a problem with that.

I did search and I didn't fine a thread dedicated to this topic... one mentioned a female gunner, but it was from like 4 years ago... why bring back a 4yr old thread?  People might have some different opinions now and perhaps there are now new singers that weren't around back then.

Anyway I like the Pattie Smith, Christina Aguelera (sp?), Cyndi Lauper, & Alanis mentions... any of those could depending on the style of the song.  :P

In order of preference:

1) Tori Amos -- would be incredible, especially if Tori played piano on the track
2) Fiona Apple --  amazing potential, as others have mentioned
3) Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney) -- opened for Pearl Jam, would make an interesting counter to Axl
4) Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil) -- strong female metal vocalist but has already sang on a Megadeth track
5) PJ Harvey -- another indie rock fave, could be intriguing
6) Nikki Monninger (Silversun Pickups) -- solid hard-rock vocalist
7) Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy) -- in a word ... petrifying

I dont remember the exact source.  This thread jarred the memory, but I remember it started after the 02 tour "finished".   Would be cool though.  She has an amazing vocal range.

Fellow Lafayette native, Amanda Overmyer.

I went to see her at the Lafayette Theater Friday night and she covered Mr. Brownstone.  It absolutely rocked!  Their voices would gel together.

I always thought the singer from 4 Non Blondes, Linda Perry had a similar vocal style to Axl. I can totally imagine Axl doing a great version of Whats Up with her, listen to the track... it's a song Axl could sing amazingly, especially those screaming parts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiDpMfEeo3Q

I like Sarah Bettens' voice (from K's Choice, they had a few hits in the past, the biggest being "Not an Addict")... I'm just not sure that her vocal style would work w/ Axl's... perhaps on an acoustic track like Patience, but Patience

hey, no one said "What ALIVE female artist would make a good duet w/ Axl?"

(Apologies for leading this thread a little off topic but didn't want to clutter the board with a new one.)

Just read about Tom Jones' new album (due on 25 Nov) - it's quoted on Reuters as being:
"...this is a characteristically splashy, bombastic, large-sounding platter of future-retro swagger in the vein of the Amy Winehouse-led throwback-soul movement."

And just thought that should Axl and Tom, by some million-to-one chance, be on the same talk show or whatever at some point in the near future, it'd be fascinating to see them do a one-off performance together.  Yes/no - any thoughts?  Certainly different, I'd say.

It would literaly be unique to see those two doing a duet,  Tom Jones wouldn't have even began to be a thought in my head placed beside Axl ???  I did listen to him growing up as he was definately my parents era, and I find him to have a most lovey voice, but in all reality I cant' picture it or hear it :-\  There is another thread on page 4, What if Axl collaborated with... :)

Her cd "Acid Tongue" is amazing.

Alanis would work, the Dolly parton is retarded.. how could you think of that?

Sheryl Crow... that would work on a slower song.

Fair enough, I guess it's not likely to happen anyway and it was maybe something of an unusual suggestion.  However, there's a track on his new album called 'Sugar Daddy', (written for him by Bono) which is worth a listen to.

On the subject of female singers, there's no one in the rock/pop world that I'd consider to be in Axl's league, but I wouldn't mind seeing him taking the opera route, like Freddie Mercury, and singing with someone like Katherine Jenkins.

Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood.

Both grew up huge fans of GN'R with great vocal range.

Why should there even be a female artist making a duet with Axl? Especially with GNR material. It would ruin it.

Amy Crackhouse or Christina Aguilera would be coo. I don't like Aguilera but she's got one good voice

Wasn't it rumored a few years ago that Sarah Brightman did some recording with GN'R.  Possibly for The General.  Did this ever get debunked??

Never heard that... do you remember any source?

I dont remember the exact source.  This thread jarred the memory, but I remember it started after the 02 tour "finished".   Would be cool though.  She has an amazing vocal range.

I heard that too. Could she have been a good fit for 'This I love'?
