You know when a piano sounds really honky.

Like in Crocodile Rock

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
John Lennon - Imagine

Two of my favorites, and probably the most recognizable.

The Velvet Underground - I'm Waiting For The Man. There's some proper rock 'n' roll piano right there.

Also, You're All I Need by Motley Crue has a nice mix of piano and guitar.

Aladdin Sane by Bowie

The recurring short tune is what i mean. So much emotion and mood with so few chords. Its supernatural how those couple of simple piano chorts can radiate so much oddball hazy decadence:o
Special mention to the amazing chaotic improvised piano solo it has.

Cornflake Girl by Tori Amos.

You beat me to it...good call.  I'd also throw "Faded" by The Afghan Whigs into the mix.

The first song that popped into my head was Eric Clapton - Layla.  I love the outro to that song.

Billy Joel and Elton John both have so many great ones, its hard to choose.

Beethoven' Moonlight Sonata

Nothing on this planet will ever come close to the perfection that is this piece.

I agree. Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14  is one of the most beautiful pieces of music.

Also, Erik Satie - Gnossiennes

I can't believe nobody mentioned it, but:

Guns N' Roses - November Rain.

The best!

Elton John - Tiny Dancer

Patrick Doyle - Knowing You By Heart

If Genesis is referring to the part where Axl re-starts the song (right before Ron does the final guitar solo), why wouldn't you consider that a piano riff?

(I'm not trying to be a smart-ass.  I'm asking seriously because that piano part is one of my fav "theatrical" parts of the show.  Actually, the part where everything sorta stops and Axl takes a sip of his drink and pauses and smirks right before he plays that piano part is my fav but that's only because it's the build-up to that piano part.)

That part maybe. I was just thinking of the 95% of the rest of the song where the piano is just playing arpeggios and chords that I wouldnt classify as riffage. Genesis didnt specify which part of the song. Either way, I still dont consider it a riff, at least not a momorably brilliant one. Its a genius song, but I dont consider it one with a riffy nature of any kind.

oh.  okay.  But I'm kinda surprised you don't consider that "a memorably brilliant one" because when Axl starts to play that it's instantly recognizable as the "shudder to the climax" so to speak.

..... but then again, that little smirk of Axl's does that for me too.  ;)

What the Fuck Kujo!  :o

I'm starting to worry about your musical taste. It's so SIMILAR to mine!!

I was just about to post the very same thing. Layla's piano outro is simply sublime.

Others that come to mind:

Trust - The Cure
Octorber - U2
You never gave me your money - The Beatles
Starlight - Muse
Amen Omen - Ben Harper (this is not a piano riff per se, more a piano solo but beatiful)

 ??? Arpeggios and chords?

I think the favourite piano solo that Genesis was referring is the one known as the "2nd solo"
I can't believe nobody mentioned it, but:

(as played by Slash on the guitar - too).

I believe it is:

a mimum (c) followed by a dotted crotchet (b - natural), a quaver (c), a crotchet (d) foolowed by a semi-quaver (c-b), then 4 semi quavers (c - g - e - g), dotted crotchet (c), some demi semi quavers (g - a - g - f), then a minum (g), followed by some other quavers/semi quavers/dotted quavers etc etc. repeat.

Great call on the Ben Harper song. Reminded me that Younger Than Today from his latest Cd is phenomenal also.

I once again affirm that it isnt a riff. If I consider that progression a riff, then I would consider every piece of music as one continuous riff, which I dont, so I dont, so it isn't.

Kudos for the musical terminology commonly referred to as eighth notes and quarter notes though  : ok:
