Title: Duff McKagan 'On the Record' - Video
Post by: FunkyMonkey on July 07, 2008, 02:34:26 PM
This is a rush transcript from "On the Record ," July 3, 2008.

JAMIE COLBY, FOX NEWS HOST: Ozzy Osbourne, Bret Michaels, and Motley Crue, they have all gone "On the Record." And tonight it's Duff McKagan's turn. Earlier the former bassist for Guns N' Roses and current member of Velvet Revolver sat down with Greta.

He's working on a new project that might surprise you.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, FOX NEWS HOST: Duff, thank you for joining us.

DUFF MCKAGAN, BASSIST: You're welcome. Thanks for having me on.

VAN SUSTEREN: People know you from your music career, but I want to start first with your business career. You're a businessman now.

MCKAGAN: Well, yes, something like that. In between Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver, I went to the Albert School of Business, and that's how Velvet Revolver started, and the first record took off. We toured for 2.5 years, and made our second record, and toured again until just April.

And the opportunity came up a couple of months ago with nuTsie and Dave Deeder(ph), who is an executive there. He and I grew up together. He's from the band The Presidents of the United States. And I'm now on their advisory board and doing press for them.

VAN SUSTEREN: I want to talk about Guns n' Roses and Velvet Revolver, but I also want to talk about nuTsie. What is it nuTsie.

MCKAGAN: It's a digital music service, that, basically, to break it down, you send them your I-tunes library. It's free to sign up. And you can access your I-tunes library or mine or anybody who has signed up to nuTsie from your mobile device, or any web account, really.

And so you can basically take your phone, if it's MP-3 compatible, and listen to my I-tunes library or yours or whoever's while you're walking down the street.

VAN SUSTEREN: So I can take my blackberry, for instance, and put in nuTsie.com, get an account, and then if I want to listen to your music, or do you have to give me a password so I can hear your I-tunes collection?

MCKAGAN: No, you can listen to mine. Anybody who has an account at nuTsie, there's also tons of play lists you can sign up for, and, again, it's all free.

VAN SUSTEREN: So can I spy on the type of music you're playing if I'm curious and wondering what you're listening to?

MCKAGAN: Yes.

VAN SUSTEREN: I can find out what you like.

MCKAGAN: Yes. You can look into my whole I-tunes library.

VAN SUSTEREN: Let's talk about Guns N' Roses. Do you miss it?

MCKAGAN: That was a long time ago. It was an amazing time for the five of us. We were really, really young, and we experienced this thing. We created the four records we made together. We created that music out of sheer passion. And you can't trade that for anything.

I don't miss that. I barely remember it, to tell you the truth.

VAN SUSTEREN: You played with Guns N' Roses, sort of hit the skids, came around and went to business school, and then Velvet Revolver. How do you compare the experience of Velvet Revolver and Guns n' Roses?

MCKAGAN: Well, I was an adult, really, by the time VR started. I had a wife, and still do, and two daughters. So, for me, touring was a completely different experience. It was more about how is going to see my wife and kids than really like where the next party was.

VAN SUSTEREN: If I were to get nutsy.com and access your music list right now, your I-tunes list, what do you think I would be most surprised about on your list?

MCKAGAN: Probably the R&B, and funk stuff I have on there.

VAN SUSTEREN: Why?

MCKAGAN: Probably people don't equate that with me so much.

VAN SUSTEREN: I know you play the bass. Who's the best lead guitarist you've ever listened to?

MCKAGAN: Lead guitar player? I've got to say Slash, the guy I've been playing with for 22 or 23 years is one of the best. Not just because I play with him, he really is.

Hendrix was amazing. Prince is also a killer of a guitar player. He doesn't get as many props as he should. But Slash is probably up there with anybody.

VAN SUSTEREN: Drummer?

MCKAGAN: Matt Sorum, John Bonham, Keith Moon.

VAN SUSTEREN: Duff, thank you for joining us. Good luck. I'm going to look at nuTsie.com and see what it is. I like gadgets and I like music.

MCKAGAN: Cool. Check it out. It's easy.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right, thank you.

MCKAGAN: Thanks, Greta.

I never really cared for Led Zepplin at all, The Who are ok, I liked Guns way better so I actually rate Matt higher-I thought his drumming on the Illusions album was great-anyway, it's still amazing that Duff actually came close to a college degree and just the overall way he turned himself around overall-on the making videos he just looked at seemed in terrible shape

It doesn't matter whether you care for Led Zepp or The Who, but:
Matt Sorum != John Bonham or Keith Moon. Ever. Period.

Having said that, I think Duff had to say what he said after he mentioned Slash as one of the greatest guitarists ever. After all... All the egos have to be handled carefully, including Matt Sorum.

If I'm not a fan of either band, I could care less who the drummer is-I'm not a mark for bands just because they sold millions of albums and are in the Rock and roll hall of fame

That question had nothing to do with who his favorite drummers are.

He was asked about his old band and mentioned the line-up without his favorite drummer....

Gilby and Matt didn't record four albums with GN'R and neither did Steven.....

It seems like he's talking of the AFD line up and the rise to fame, but then mentions the four albums which weren't recorded by that line up.

Anyway, seems like Duff has to play nice to keep his band members happy.

Jarmo, he is giving band member speak for sure.

Matt is a good drummer.

Slash is great guitar player.

Duff is a good bass player.

Common theme, all bandmates and all friends.  So he is just being nice.

You can like his drumming if you want. You can think he's the greatest drummer ever if you want.

But I don't have to agree with Matt being up there with iconic drummers like Keith Moon or John Bonham.

What's wrong with that?

Nothing's wrong with that, and if I remember right I never said you'd have to agree with me or Duff.. it's simply great that you seem to have a good time in the VR-section bashing the old members of GN'R ;) But hey, it's your board.

I just saw something a bit humorous in my opinion and commented on it.

Funny seeing you having the philosophy that you have to agree with former members of GN'R all the time.

Even though some of them have been more than happy to attack the band.

Yeah, it's all fun to make accusations but when asked for proof, it's "OMG ROTFL LOLZ!11!!!!!"

I just don't agree that a certain book is "setting the record straight", I don't think it's very cool that people bashing GN'R are also reaping the benefits of being in the band etc.

I guess you think that's bashing.

I didn't say a bad word about Duff or Matt in this thread. Yet I'm "bashing".

I merely commented on the fact that Duff thinks Matt is up there with Keith and John. Something I disagree with and some of you seem to agree on.

Yet I'm the one "bashing former members".

I pointed out that to me it looks like Duff is talking about the AFD line-up (since he mentions five guys being young), which means Matt isn't in the picture and then goes on talking about four records... A bit confusing. I guess it's bashing!

Dizzy was hardly a core member at the time. He was hired to play keyboards live and he didn't contribute to any of the albums. I don't see why Duff would mention him.

Anyway, seems like Duff has to play nice to keep his band members happy.

That's what I would think, yes.

Dont really see the big deal

I think everyone knows that drummers for the most part are the easiest member to replace in a band. There are very very few drummers that cant be replaced

Moon,Bonham, Lee,Ulrich,Grohl.................. Don Henley cause he was the fuckin singer :hihi:

a great drummer is as important to the band as a great guitarplayer, a good singer, bassist and guitarist has a shitty band if the drummer's shitty, only reason it's easier to replace them is because they don't get as much attention as the rest of the band

Ok, since we're going to "nitpick" about one statement in that entire interview......

I disagree.  I've always been under the impression that those first 4 albums were mostly written and created by the 5 guys Duff was probably referring to, plus West.  Even including the songs on UYI, because a couple members came in, after the fact.  But, the songs were written & pretty much created - some of them years before UYI.

And as for really, really young....I think late teens/early twenties is really, really young - but, then again, I'm 46.  As for Matt being 29 or whatever when he joined, he wasn't referring to Matt - that was later.

I think he was just making a comment in reference to what probably are his best memories of being in that band and what it was about for him.

Why pick it apart?

As for the statement he made about drummer and Sorum - I have no comment.

Anyway, anyone else checked out nutsie?

He mentioned the FIVE guys who CREATED those 4 records....I hate giving Steven Adler credit on anything, and I wont here, but I will say those records were created before Sorum came around..and EVERYONE omits Dizzy...which is really puzzling to me...Dizzy has been in the band longer than anyone except Axl ,and VH1's "Behind the Music" did not even mention his name once in that entire show,.not to mention Slash kind of referred to Dizzy being on the same level as Teddy..."just a touring musician" in his autobiography if I remember correctly..

PEople for get that Dizzy was asked to join the band back during AFD days, but he fucked upped his   hand... that being off topic, Duff intentions are in business, and end of the day in that interview, nuTzie is something he is championing, I see no relevance to who he things is best guitar player or drummer, I expected nothing less from his comments. And I agree with jarmo when he stated the 5 guys... he was talking about the AFD days. not a whole lot to infer really.

Puts the Matt mention in perspective.

First it's like he wasn't an integral part of GN'R (like Matt himself seems to think) and then he's listed along two legendary drummers.

Jarmo, are you simply stupid or are you just acting like one? You don't even want to understand what I'm asking here.

Ah, insults.

Trying to understand what you're asking is beyond the point, since you're asking something that you've managed to get out of my posts. Something that wasn't even there.

You found some kind of weird meaning in my post and are asking based on that.

Ask something relevant based on what I actually said instead of asking me something stupid that you think I said.

Then I'll answer.

No you didn't, but you clearly pointed it out that Duff enjoyed the early years, and STILL says that Matt's a great drummer. So what the fucking what?

And I'm stupid.....

Nowhere did I say one thing makes the other impossible.

Let me give you a fucking example.

If somebody asks you about a time of your life and then you forget to mention your best friend even though he was there too.

Then you realize you should probably say something nice about him too since his feelings might get hurt so you call him your best special friend ever when answering another question.

Now everybody's happy!

Uhhmhmmhm.. Duff was asked about Guns N' Roses, he said it was great time for the five of them (as said, probably the AFD-lineup). Later he was asked about his favorite drummers and he mentions Matt. Well I guess you think egos are pathetic....

By the way, once again I didn't say I think Duff thinks that way. I said it seems like it's damage control to mention Matt later. He already mentioned Slash so gotta mention the other guy too.

Happy now?

Or do you wanna go another round of what you think I meant in my bashing posts that are so stupid and pathetic?
