1 Killed After Alleged Drunk Driver Plows Into Bike Race

June 1: A car collides into cyclists participating in a race in Mexico's northern border city of Matamoros.

A car driven by an alleged drunken driver plowed into a bicycle race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border Sunday, killing one cyclist and injuring 10 others.

Juan Campos was apparently drunk and had fallen asleep at the wheel before crashing into the race in Monterrey, Mexico, police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez said.

A photograph taken by a city official shows the horrifying moment of impact. The force of the collision sent bicyclists and equipment high into the air and Matamoros newspaper El Ma?ana described children crying, women shouting for help and men trying to lynch Campos before police arrived to arrest him.

Killed in the crash was Alejandro Alvarez, 37, of Monterrey.

Campos told police he was an American citizen from Brownsville, Texas. The U.S. consulate could not immediately confirm that.

"We are looking into the incident in terms of whether American citizens were involved,'' consulate spokesman Todd Huizinga told the Associated Press.

The crash happened 15 minutes into the race along a highway between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, authorities said.

A total of 452 cyclists were participating in the 21-mile race, which was canceled after the incident.

The timing of that shot is unbelievable. I can only imagine what was going through the riders heads at that moment 
( other than the car).

i'm not condonning what that tard that was driving drunk did/ doing at the time, BUT one thing that pisses me off to no end is when fucking cyclists ride bikes on a damn highway. Highways are for cars that are 1000+lbs not fucking idiots on 30 lb bikes >:(

It was a fucking bicycle race.  At least read the article instead of only looking at the purdy picture.

Yeah man we get that alot here.  The ultimate worst is the fucking idiot that actually rides in the lane instead of on the shoulder of the road thus disabling you to pass him due to oncoming traffic.  I need one of those bumper stickers from Darth Helmet's ship in spaceballs..."I Brake For No One."

Get that around here too. They tend to be in more wealthy areas and wear all the funny looking gear. 

We get the college douchebags from Penn State that decide to ride up the huge mountain that seperates it from my town.  They pack together and as you said wear those stupid ass tour de France outfits like they're Lance friggen Armstrong.  Only one person in history has rocked a pair of biker shorts and got away with it.......and that man is Axl Rose.

Don't worry, all of them just dusted themselves off and hopped on the bike again, winning the race. One of them even got the nomination for the Democratic party.
