Title: Tommy Stinson Searching for Artistic Merit
Post by: welshrose on May 19, 2008, 11:20:55 AM
Amigos,

I was just reading a new Paul Westerberg interview with Pitchforkmedia.com. They discuss Tommy for a bit.

Pitchfork: Talking to Tommy a couple of years ago, I got the impression that after all that hard work, after all those miles on the road, that what he's doing right now [as a member of Guns n' Roses] is in some ways his reward. Finally play arenas, get kept on a retainer...

PW: If you talked to him more recently you might get a different vibe. But you know, that's fairly true. It was a couple of years ago that he probably felt that. But now he's thinking more artistically. I heard a batch of his songs he sent me. I added a few things and sent it back. He wants to be more of an artist now. That's just the way it goes. You're a performer for ten years straight, then you want to go home and actually write a tune or whatever. But he more than any of us is sort of built for the stage. If he goes without performing for a long time then he can't stay still.

Nothing big? Or another member who might sail away due to inactivity?

Discuss....

If you haven't noticed already, Tommy has used the time between GN'R tours to make music for movies and TV.

For example, there was the Catch And Release score he did with BT.

I'm sure Tommy finally made a ton of money with GNR, which he felt he deserved-who knows how much input he has on CD, but his solo work is excellent

It'd be nice if these various members of GNR could take all this creative energy and work together... rather than all doing their own separate projects.
What ever happened to the whole being more than the sum of it's parts ?

I guess that's just the way it is now.

Strange comment, but the upcoming albums are just what you are saying, their solo stuff is something that just doesn't fit GN'R.

Listening to Village Gorilla Head now.  He may not have gotten a lot of recognition/money for it but this is a damn good cd.  Thank you Tommy, may I have another?

So how come nobody's getting pissed off at the interviewer & PW both implying that Tommy could well be in GnR for the money & the exposure?

Haven't read the interview so i have no clue how accurate your version of  what they are impying is but to asnwer your question,
Because he's propably in GNR becase of money & the exposure?
Hello!Fortune and fame? WHy do people join in big rock bands in 1st place? Jeez!

You think he is in GNR because it is such a nice and inspiring creative environment where an artist can truly express himself and flourish?:p

Probably a question best left to Tommy to answer.  A no brainer for us, cool.
