Title: Small GNR mention in a review for Madonna in NYC
Post by: HBK on May 05, 2008, 04:42:00 PM
A crowd far larger than the 2,200 capacity of New York club Roseland camped out overnight on the streets of midtown Manhattan awaiting the chance to see Madonna debut tracks from her new album Hard Candy on Wednesday. The audience of celebs and die-hard fans who actually made it through the doors in time for her 10 p.m. set (which was broadcast on the Web via MSN and to mobile customers of Verizon Wireless) seemed more awed than ready to groove when Madonna hit the stage in the city where she first made her name, spending time texting and taking photos to prove the experience had really happened rather than dancing. But the cheers were ear-splitting, and with good reason: For 40 minutes Madonna delivered an impressive taste of what her upcoming Hard Candy tour might look like ? tight choreography to match her sculpted body, reinterpreted tracks, a bit of rock & roll and a star ready to run her mouth.

After spinning approximately an hour?s worth of music ranging from Rihanna to the Eurythmics (though the biggest cheers came for ?Sweet Child O? Mine? and a spotting of Rosie O?Donnell in the balcony), Madonna?s DJ flipped on 50 Cent?s ?Candy Shop? and dropped in a bit of ?I Want Candy.? Eventually the tracks faded, making way for the sound of Madonna singing the chorus from Hard Candy opener ?Candy Shop,? at which point the lights dropped and the night?s main attraction emerged on a throne swinging a cane

I know it sounds far fetched, but I believe there are some fans out there who actually just appreciate seeing their favorite artist/band perform and don't bitch and moan about the setlists, time they hit the stage and not hearing their one off favorite song... I don't know... maybe in wrong...

i guess a band of such high regard sets alot of standards, sometimes the fans take these standards and develop their own impossible for GNR to please everyone.

Nope, probably only complained about her horse face and bad music eroding their souls. I don't know if it's true, but I heard that just by saying 'Madonna', it makes God cry. I don't know, I just heard that somewhere.

Oh, that's interesting smartass, because I didn't know that GNRs record was supposed to come out last week. I heard that they were in negotiations, but that's just silly. I mean who listens to official websites or managers...

True, it was a smartass remark. After we peak with some Axl/band news, we quickly go back into the dark valley of snarky comments. Given this post was based on 21 year old song getting three cheers at a MADONNA show, and not about any type of band news, I figured being the assclown to make a pointless, but in general all around theory, true comment.

I, along with every other soul here listens and checks all the sites, official and unofficial every day, mostly multiple times, and have been for years. Where there will be news, we'll all know about it.

So, while the negotiations are going on, why don't you check out some more concerts, and see if there's any more playlisting of GNR songs. Mariah Carey should be on tour soon. Clay Aiken is usually doing a show. HEY! NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK are makin' a comeback-dude! check it out and report back to us.

I was just giving you history to your question. Her fans don't need to complain because she doesn't give them reason too.

There's your answer. She's very considerate.

So ALL of her fans were happy with the setlists she molded to each of their wishes.  NO fans left the show saying, "I can't believe she didn't play ---------?"  I find that hard to believe.  Even if she did change up the setlist, I'm sure some fans could still find ways to bitch about the setlist.  Believe me there's no "perfect" setlist that can satisfy all or even a majority of fans of a band/artist.

They seem to get their money's worth, don't they? That's what happens when you stay consistent, tour a record, and are able to fill arenas in any market...

Title: Re: Small GNR mention in a review for Madonna in NYC
Post by: faldor on May 06, 2008, 09:35:49 AM
Well that's a different argument, I was just commenting on the "setlist", which is a constant complaint on this board.  And as far as staying consistent by releasing albums, touring, and filling arenas.  First off Madonna is a huge name who could fill arenas with or without new music.  Secondly, it's great to release album after album for the fans, but sometimes the quality suffers when things are rushed.  I'll use Pearl Jam as an example.  I used to love that band and they released albums at a quick rate early on.  I loved it.  However, after Vitalogy the quality started going downhill rapidly in my opinion.  I bought the next 2 releases out of loyalty but was unimpressed.  I haven't bothered going back down that road since.  I'm not saying fans should have to wait 14 years for an album, but I'd rather have something of great quality than something that just seemed rushed (see "St. Anger".)

Of course they did.  I'm sure you're not suggesting that only GNR fans do that.  I know that Springsteen fans do it, and they get much more varied and unpredictable setlists than GNR fans have ever gotten.  There's not a band-related messageboard on the Internet that doesn't include people bitching about setlists, not being on time, length of shows, political views, etc.

I've seen many concerts, but GN'R are the only band who consistantly come on EXTREMELY late..Always a great show and always a great set list...Only other time a band was so late was when Widowmaker were having a hard time collecting from a Bayshore Long Island club owner..

There isn't a time for GNR listed on the tickets though, just when the doors open. ;)

messageboards on the internet are the key words. I haven't ever heard fans setlist bitching outside of those boards.

Yeah people who aren't hardcore fans of a band/artist want to hear certain songs and could care less about others, so there are always gonna be complaints from them.  However, if you find yourself complaining about the setlist, in my opinion you aren't that big a fan of the band/artist.  If you were, you'd love every minute of the experience seeing them live.

Madonna's my idol..

As a woman, she symbolises everything that remotely smells of success.

Damn people. Don't we all go to concerts saying, I wish they would have played this or that... It's only logical if you are a fan. Some people are casual fans and only know the hits while others buy the albums and listen to everything not just the hits. And those who buy the album and listen to the whole thing usually find they like certain songs better or would love to hear them live. The artist tries to create a setlist that will please everyone but most importantly get their new music out. Every member of that audience probably has a list of songs they want to hear. And as a fan, you might mention, I wish they would have played whatever but you don't hold it against the band. Be glad you are still able to see them live in concert. There are some bands that don't tour. I like XTC and the lead singer is so afraid of performing live they never tour. Now I don't know if they have ever played live, but I have never seen them in concert. I've looked but they have never come around.

And the more material you have, it's harder to cram all that into a 2 or 3 hour show. Most artists only do 1 1/2 hours, 2 tops. but GNR consistently play long sets and they still can't get in the whole collection.

I think we should just be glad that we are finally hearing some news and our hopes may come to fruition. I surely won't complain about any song Axl sings - even if he decides to sing the songs he recorded with Baz on tour  :hihi:. I would just be glad that they are touring and hopefully he will be playing new material.

To please everyone, any band would need to play more like a 12 hour concert so they could play the whole collection. Don't think that will ever happen. But hey, maybe that's an idea ;)
