I need a laptop for university this fall.

Something reliable and efficient for school work, but also fast for games on the side ;)

dell makes some pretty nice high end laptops for gaming.

Actually i think they would be pretty similar in quality.  personally i prefer dell because i've had a lot of good experiences with their machines, but as you probably know, a lot of people have had bad experiences with their tech support, which has improved in the last couple of years.

why not save up 500 more and get a Mac?


I love Dell to be honest.

I ordered a laptop from Dell and a computer strictly for music.

They have always been reliable as long as u watch what u download and dont go to sites with lots of spyware and shit.

get the extra memory

Dell has a sale right now where u can get 4 gigs of memory for cheaper than anyone else would dare to price it.

get a good Dell quadcore with 4 gigs of ram and u are set.

u can get that probably under 1500

HP support is worse, I am not even going to start  :smoking:

And the one who said get a Mac.... most games are not playable, for 500 dollars more you still have a slower one, you will have problems with many other things concerning software and hardware.. on top of that, you will look like a corksniffing quasi arty farty wannabe. Macs are ok if you do a lot (and I mean it's part of your job or studies) of photo/video/audio editing...if you don't, forget it  :peace:

A nice Dell quadcore like D suggested sounds pretty nice.

The only thing that makes me nervous is what you guys have said about their technical support.

Is it a trade off in that you get a great laptop with less than great support, while other brands have excellent technical support, but not so great laptops?

I was given a macbook as a gift and I love it!  I highly recommend.  Never had any problems, no shutdowns or freezes and it is much more organized than my windows computer. 

I like both mac and p.c's.

I had an acer laptop once and I loved that computer but it was robbed from me, so now that I have my taxes back, I'm going to buy a new laptop. I'm gonna go for another acer cause I had a good experience with my last one.

Get a lenovo thinkpad. I have one and it is the greatest computer I have ever owned. I've had it for a year and a half and had no problems with it so far.

Question about my laptop for everyone...

Got a Toshiba P205-S6347 laptop with a HD-DVD burner in it. Since HD-DVD is taking a shit and going down the drains, would I be able to buy a blu-ray burner/drive for my PC and have it put in?

i dont see why you couldnt do that.  blu-ray burners are pretty expensive at the moment though

yeah I've seen them on various sites (TigerDirect, CircuitCity, etc.) and the prices are pretty high. I'm waiting awhile anyway, was just seeing if it was possible or not? I've done add-ons and stuff with my desktop PC although I'd have to get a professional to do the laptop, don't want to mess with it. shes my baby : ok: haha

It was on sale awhile back for $660, it's regularly priced at 800.

I'll have to take a look at what's available now cause I'll have more money this time around.

I got  my Delllaptop today. I didnt order anything super fancy. just an intel core 2 duo so it would be fast. I dont use it for games or anything, just straight internet and school work so i didnt need a lot of the extra stuff and it cost 800 bucks. So it was a great deal. 1 gig of Ram, 120 gig harddrive. 2.0ghz  and I got the best fastest wireless card they sold and I am getting amazing wifi connections.

To be quite frank, your avatar is blocked using Adblock Plus in my FF browser. It gives me a headache. ;D
Seriously, check it out. Pages load faster since all ads are blocked automatically. IE can eat shit.

Firefox and Opera aren't part of the the Windows Kernel so yes they are superior in everyway. when it comes to browsing nothing renders better than Opera.

I would check out local computing magazines, instead of asking here.

I have a Dell Dimension however it works with but this computer I had to buy on the cheap so it doesnt have the memory and the speed to run all the tracks I want to run.

 dell probably hooked you up with some wack ass hardware and thats probably why the laptop couldnt handle the program and crashed?

Im not the most technical savvy guy in the universe and I kind of look at it like, If pay 1000 bucks and it fucks up within a week............ Thats a good sign to just send the thing back.

The only problem I've had with my Inspiron so far is that it completely froze up the other day while I was playing Chess.

you should call them and try to fix it before sending it back.. it could be something relatively easy to fix.

i think it depends on if their support could figure out what the problem is.
but it seems like it's a hardware problem so you pretty much had to do it.
