The La's never wrote another great song. The Arctic Monkeys are just NME babies. I like Satisfaction, but there are better Stones songs/riffs. Teen Spirit was Nirvana's greatest hit, but did not have their best riff. I though Zepp had better riffs than WLL. I cannot argue the Deep Purple or Guns. Eddie Cochran is quite random. Joan Jett is American Idol fodder. The White Stripes are added just to make the list look cool to people in their early to mid 20's.

The list could be better imo

The Seven Nation Army "riff" sounds like a bass line to me.  I know is supposedly isn't but I don't think guitar when I hear it.

The related article...

From The Times

Why the riff is the cornerstone of rock

It may be no more than a repeated series of notes, but the guitar riff is the cornerstone of rock - and Will Hodgkinson would sell his soul for one

the caption is not so random.

"Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns N' Roses
Slash thought it was too throwaway. Thank God the band convinced him to keep it in.. "

Still trying to find the "riff" in "Smells like Teen Spirit".

Jesus no Sabbath? What the hell! Iommi basically wrote the riff dictionary. A lot of Sabbath songs have enough riffs to make 3 songs out of. Hole in the sky, symptom of the universe, snowblind, paranoid, sabbath bloody sabbath....you could put any Ozzy era song on that list and it would be right.

The La's never wrote another great song.

Timeless Melody is pretty good....  ;)

The White Stripes are added just to make the list look cool to people in their early to mid 20's.

Yeah, that often seems to be the case. They add something recent to get younger people to notice the list.

It's also interesting how the lists are different in the US compared to the UK.

I don't think the Arctic Monkeys would make a list in the US.

But the classics, like GN'R, appear on lists both sides of the Atlantic.

Where the hell is Hell's Bells??

I agree with the other posters about the lack of Sabbath. And Enter Sandman or For Whom The Bell Tolls should have been there. The Arctic Monkeys? The hell are they doing there?

EDIT: I just thought of Raining Blood by Slayer but then remembered that it is The Times...

Arctic Monkeys?  I'm no guitar wizard but I really don't even hear a riff in that song.

Nice to see another list of "riffs"-songs which have no riff in them  :peace:

I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor - Arctic Monkeys

A chord progression and a little run... very bad ones at that

Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses

A lick, then licks over chord progressions.... of all the songs of GnR they pick the one without a single riff, that is an achievement on it's own

I Love Rock 'n' Roll - Joan Jett

Chord progression and licks..... this song was nominated by Johnny Clueless, middle name ToneDeaf

Seven Nation Army - White Stripes

Ah finally, a riff in the list.... a corny one but still  :peace:

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Chord progressions and some chord progressions and then some chord progressions, a very little small riff after chorus, about 5 seconds long but no one even noticed that, they only hear the chord progressions and some chord progressions and then some chord progressions, the end

Come On Everybody by Eddie Cochran

Chord progressions with dorky melody

There She Goes - The La?s

Licks and chords, anyone who thinks there is a riff in there should be shot in the face, taped and uploaded on youtube for everyone to see

Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones

Riff... one to entertain people with 2 braincells, but it is a riff  :peace:

Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin

Riff and chords, so 50-50  :peace:

Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple

You can't get more riff than this one  :peace:

maybe arctic monkeys are modern day cliff richard and the shadows? :hihi:

well it's the times, not a rock magazine or a rock radio station.
On the contrary I wonder if the two from the us, Eddie Cochran and Joan Jett, be there if it was NYtimes?
