Title: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: Falcon on February 18, 2008, 11:54:26 AM Thanks to Billy Morrison for the following
www.billymorrison.net/weblog I am pleased to be able to tell you that Camp Freddy will be taking over the world famous Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles every Thursday night during the month of May for our very first residency. Each week we will perform a different set list and the evenings performance will culminate with two or three songs featuring our very special guests of the night. We will NOT be advertising these guests in advance. The band will be joined each week by our good friend, and longtime Camp Freddy cohort, Mr Mark McGrath. Mark will perform each week with us and will join Donovan in hosting the evenings festivities. I am sure that a friend or two might appear onstage at each gig as well. Tickets WILL be available to everyone and I will give you all more details when we have them. Lastly, the CFR Podcast page has been updated and the recent shows are now available. Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: Smoking Guns on February 18, 2008, 12:19:01 PM That sounds cool! Wonder if Scott and Slash will be among guests?
Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: Falcon on February 18, 2008, 12:40:42 PM That sounds cool! Wonder if Scott and Slash will be among guests? Scott is actually a "core" member of CF so it'll be interesting to see how his current situation (rehab/STP) effects any Freddy commitments. I'll be curious to see how/if he interacts with Matt and if there's any visible fall out with their relationship. I virtually guarranty Slash will make an appearance or 2, along Billy Duffy, Steve Jones and a few surprises.. "So now its our turn, and after a hugely stressful afternoon of guestlist/setup/soundcheck/logistics, I felt ready for a nap! But the moment we got up there, I woke up!! We have changed a bunch of songs up now, and have an arsenal of new tunes - we opened with Cheap Trick's Hello There and then straight into Blur's Song Two. Mark McGrath (who is doing every show as our featured guest) came on and blew it all wide open with a killer version of Killing Jokes Eighties. And from there it just got surreal.....Poe singing Led Zep's Good Times Bad Times, Nuno Bettencourt just NAILING Oasis' Rock And Roll Star, Warren De Martini shredding Round And Round, Jerry Cantrell (not scheduled to play, but being part of the Freddy Family, always welcome!) wandering out and killing it on Jailbreak, and of course, my personal highlight (not only of the show but maybe my entire career!) - doing the Sex Pistols EMI with Steve Jones AND Paul Cook!! Lemmy came on to finish the night out and we did Ace Of Spades (which is one of the most violent songs I have ever played!) and Eddie Cochrans Something Else, with Paul Cook and Matt sorum on drums, THREE Bass players (Lemmy, Chris Chaney and Corey Parks from Nashville Pussy!) and me, Navarro and Jonesy on guitars. I Wanna Be Your Dog finished the night in true Camp Freddy fashion....with the Darling Stilettos joining us all onstage and every musician grabbing an instrument and jamming. We got four more of these crazy shows to do, and I strongly advise any fan of rock music not to miss any of them. Each week is different songs and different guests. Next weeks show is gonna BLOW YOUR MIND!!! Thats all I got for ya - the V-Blog will be up later today, so check back and have a quick look. Until then....adios amigos" (http://www.billymorrison.net/weblog/archives/Madness-thumb.jpg) Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: leatherebel on May 02, 2008, 01:51:48 PM Was there. It wasn't as impressive as they make it sound. A sad picture actually - a bunch of former elderly overweight (save Navarro) "rockstars" in tights who still think they have it. And a singer who was in what I call a pop boys band didn't really help. Navarro was playing more low profile solos and rythm. I guess, to let his guest guitarists "shine". The whole show 1hr15min.
The only interesting thing - more Chelsea fans than Man U in the building.....Go Blues! The following Dizzy show with the Starfuckers at the catclub topped it by miles! Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: FunkyMonkey on May 02, 2008, 02:40:57 PM Rock Heavyweights Jam Out At The Roxy
May 02, 2008, 1:30 PM ET Wes Orshoski, L.A. A cast of rock heavyweights crammed the Roxy stage in Hollywood Thursday night (May 1) for a jam session that found the likes of Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro, Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath and Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses) on stage with the likes of Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols and Alice In Chains' Jerry Cantrell. All came together for the first of five Thursday-night gigs in May featuring Navarro and Sorum's occasional side project, Camp Freddy, which also features guitarist/vocalist Billy Morrison, bassist Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction, Alanis Morissette) and singers McGrath and Donovan Leitch, son of folk singer Donovan. The Roxy is known for holding occasional jam sessions with top-shelf names, and this collective opened its Roxy stand by wowing the crowd with covers of songs by Thin Lizzy ("Jailbreak"), Oasis ("Rock and Roll Star"), Killing Joke ("Eighties"), Blur ("Song 2") and David Bowie ("Suffragette City"). "I don't know what you think of me, because I've done some pretty douche-y things in my life. But that's okay, because right now I'm gonna do the greatest thing in my life," McGrath said in introducing Jones and Cook for a rendition of the Pistols' "EMI," featuring Sorum on backing vocals. "Live it, love it, blog about it," he added before taking lead vocals. Motorhead's Kilmister got the biggest roar of the night, joining the ensemble for his band's "Ace of Spades," which found the likes of Extreme/Satellite Party's Nuno Bettencourt bouncing in the audience. Billy Duffy of the Cult and Sean Kinney of Alice In Chains also watched in approval. Ex-Ratt guitarist Warren DiMartini joined up for "Suffragette City" and a take on his band's "Round on Round," which provoked another roar when he and Navarro synched up on the track's dueling guitar solo. Guitarist Cantrell, a last-minute addition, took the stage for "Jailbreak," and singer-songwriter Poe led the band through Led Zeppelin's "Good Times Bad Times." The gig at times found multiple bassists (Kilmister, Chaney and Corey Parks, formerly of Nashville Pussy), multiple drummers (Sorum, Cook, Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction) and multiple guitarists (Bettencourt, Jones, Navarro, Morisson) all playing together, as they did on the closer: the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog." http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003798027 Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: leatherebel on May 02, 2008, 03:59:38 PM Tom Zutaut was also in attendance.

The days are moving pretty quickly right now and the calm before the storm of Week Number Two of The Residency is slowly fading. The next Camp Freddy show at The Roxy is almost upon us and its shaping up to be another epic. As we are keeping it all a surprise until the night of the show, I can only tell you that you REALLy should treat yourself to a $20 ticket this thursday!! I wouldn't miss it for the world, if I were you!! HAHA!! Its so much fun doing all this - I would love to do the same thing on the other coast. Dunno if the guys would be into it, but its been so much fun putting it all together and doing the show last week. Maybe if the logistics were right, who knows. Maybe do one in London. Why not!! I'm just thinking out loud - but I would be down. Either way, I am happy and humble that we get to do these shows. Thanks to everyone who is involved, from the band and guests to the crew and the club. Everyone is going above and beyond to put some pretty awesome rock n roll together. Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: lynn1961 on May 08, 2008, 02:25:03 AM I guess I can kind of tell that you were there, by accident....I think it's a show that you either get or you don't. I would love to see a Camp Freddy show. Unfortunately, you almost have to live in the LA area, to see one (or have a lot of money to throw away to go there and see one).
I probably wouldn't get the Dizzy show.... Camp Freddy isn't about a bunch of elderly overweight former rock stars - it's about a bunch of musicians who get together and jam for the fuck and the fun of it, I think to kind of get away from the "rock star" status, and maybe make fun of themselves, somewhere in the process. The great thing is, you never know who might be there at any given show. I don't think it's meant to be impressive - just fun. It's not meant to be a "serious" thing. It started out as a private jam session, and grew a little bit bigger. They have done shows to raise money, for charity, as well. I haven't felt this tired in a while! Four hours sleep after one of the craziest shows I have ever seen!! And I was right there in the middle of it all, playing my ass off with a bunch of musicians that I respect and love. Last nights Roxy Show (Week 2 of 5) was possibly one of the greatest 'vibe' gigs I have ever played. In that tiny club, on that small stage, we were joined by Chester Bennington, Slash, Duff, Tommy Lee, Billy Duffy, Jerry Cantrell, McQueen, Steve Jones and Paul Cook. And they were ALL on the stage at the same time for our traditional finale - Iggy Pop's I Wanna Be Your Dog!! Honestly, it was SO much fun for me, and from the noise the sold out Roxy was making, it was a lot of fun for everyone!! The full set will be over at Camp Freddy's site tomorrow (I dont have time today, cos its the MAP Awards) and I did get a ton of amazing video - so another 'clip/highlight' blog from me at the weekend as well. Just know that these Camp Freddy shows are very special - that everyone turning up, jamming and being a part of the family just want to play great music and have a fun night of loud rock and roll. We thank them all Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: Smoking Guns on May 09, 2008, 01:37:33 PM More from Billy Morrison courtesy of www.billymorrison.net/weblog I haven't felt this tired in a while! Camp Freddy - The Roxy, Hollywood Fri, 09 May 2008 Coolest summer camp ever Hollywood's notorious for cover bands. In fact, L.A.'s premier cover band, Metal Skool, recently renamed Steel Panthers, have become the hottest Monday night attraction on the Sunset Strip. They sell out the Key Club almost every week with a set that spans everything '80s, from Journey to Poison. It's largely throwback shlock, but it's all good, because that's what the tourists want. Out-of-towners just love to get a slice of that legendary, RAWK decadence, and Metal Skool satisfies that hunger. Meanwhile, there's something for the natives. You know, the "Initiated," Hollywood elite that don't attend shows, unless a silk, sticky, backstage pass is waiting for them at the will-call window. All-star cover band Camp Freddy will no doubt impress them, but make no mistake, Camp Freddy's show is fun for everyone. How can you go wrong with rock titans Dave Navarro [Jane's Addiction, Panic Channel, Red Hot Chili Peppers] and Matt Sorum [Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver] hashing out classics? That's exactly what they did last night at The Roxy, during the second of five Thursday residency shows this month. With every aspect of L.A. life, it's all about who you know, and Camp Freddy's members have famous Blackberry contacts to spare. Even though the core band of Donovan Leitch, Chris Chaney [Jane's Addiction], Billy Morrison [The Cult], Navarro and Sorum is undeniably slamming, the guests make Camp Freddy's shows special. Last night delivered once-in-a-lifetime collaborations that made even the backstage glitterati flash ZOOM!-whitened smiles. In the house were Slash, Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains, Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols, Mr. Motley Crue Tommy Lee and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. The residency shows are all MC'ed by Mark Mcgrath of Sugar Ray and Access Hollywood fame. However, McGrath can't resist grabbing the mic and kicking out the jams alongside his pals. With high profile guest appearances and an incredible core band, Camp Freddy sent a shockwave down Sunset. It's the most "rock n' roll" covers show you can see. Even the fire marshals at the packed club couldn't take their eyes off the stage. A few even snapped some camera phone shots to bring back to the big red engine. Of course, they kept things in check, minus Slash paying zero heed to the "No Smoking" policy. Thankfully, some things never change. Camp Freddy's really just a good old fashion rock show, showcasing more than a few songs everyone knows. The Cult's "Lil Devil" punched with a raw, jagged groove. McGrath took the mic and blazed through the song, emanating a classic, cock rock braggadocio. Meanwhile, Navarro shredded out the lead with blues sensibility and metal technicality. The best surprise came when Tommy Lee took over a drum kit facing Sorum and the two launched into a full-on drum duel at the end of the song. Lee flipped sticks and hit hard, facing off with Sorum's calculated, precise pummeling. Then Slash hit the stage and helped bring the house down. When the top hat-donning legend walked out, Navarro smirked. "Can someone please get Slash a guitar? Is that hard?" Appetite for Destruction classic "It's So Easy" brought everyone back to the gutter days. Duff McKagan belted out the bass line while doing a throaty and worthy Axl rendition. Slash and Navarro jammed together, volleying lead lines in a completely kinetic fashion that sparked energy from the stage. Both dominated their fret boards, bending notes and ripping through solos. The three-song salvo that followed "It's So Easy" proved to be the night's most explosive. Linkin Park's Chester Bennington took the mic for Led Zeppelin's "Good Times, Bad Times." His signature wail brought the song into the 21st century, bridging the gap between now and then. Slash and Navarro bowed at the altar of Jimmy Page, playing each line with reverence. A raw and vibrant "Highway to Hell" followed, as Chester did his most faithful Bon Scott impression and Sorum bashed away at the timeless rhythm. Of course, our two favorite guitarists kept axeing out, not missing a beat or chance to blaze a riff. After the AC/DC homage, Chester asked, "You want to hear some fucking Guns N' Roses?" The crowd erupted, and the band launched into "Paradise City." The audience clapped in unison as Slash ripped through the opening with the same fire he had in the '80s. At one point, Chester posed a question that resonated. "Do you have any idea what you're witnessing on this fucking stage tonight?" Everyone in attendance certainly did, and that's why they walked away all smiles. Its back to The Roxy we go again today for another week of fabulously uncontrolled MAYhem!! The word is out and we hear that a few people might or might not be stopping by tonight. Truly I have no idea right now how its all gonna work out. No idea exactly what guests we have (cos people keep calling and asking if we would have room in the set for 'so and so', or that 'blah blah' might drop by and could he do a song. I gave up last night trying to remember who's who, what's what, and how it might all work. I intend to show up today, put a guitar on and try to figure out what songs we are actually playing. This shit is SO much fun!! If you are coming tonight - hold on to your hat cos you have as much idea about what we are gonna do, as we do!! HAHA Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: Falcon on May 16, 2008, 10:03:42 AM Looks as though Jerry Cantrell and Terri Nunn were a couple of the guests at last nights (5/15) CF gig.

Camp Freddy - The Roxy, Hollywood Fri, 16 May 2008 08:14:05 So you wanna be a rock superstar? Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman, Corey Taylor, could very well be a superhero, if he wanted to be. He got his chance to fly with Camp Freddy last night, leaping from one classic rock cover to another in a single bound. In fact, while sharing a stage with Dave Navarro, Matt Sorum and Jerry Cantrell, Corey transformed into a bona fide rock god quicker than Clark Kent can hop out of a phone booth. Yes, he remains metal's best frontman. However, last night, a chichi crowd of Hollywood elite got to witness what so many metal heads already knew: Corey's got some serious pipes and overpowering charisma. To put it simply, he's a frontman to be reckoned with. Once he launched into a shirtless rendition of Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love," all bets were off. Even the chic, model-looking types couldn't keep their eyes off of him as he dominated the stage, bringing David Lee Roth to the 21st century. He scaled the wall of mainstream rock, like Spiderman climbing a skyscraper. Now, he's staying there. That's what Camp Freddy encourages though, ass-kicking, old fashioned rock and roll. Ever since they commenced their May residency three weeks ago, Camp Freddy has simply transformed The Roxy into Hollywood's Thursday-Night-Place-To-Be. This show was easily the most explosive so far. Alice in Chains mastermind Jerry Cantrell joined the fold for a raucous rendition of "Highway to Hell," complete with a smooth guitar solo volley between him and Navarro. Just like characters out of a Tarantino flick, these rock stars simply emanate "cool," in the most classic sense of the word. Navarro exclaimed, "So Jerry Cantrell wants to do an AC/DC song. I guess we're going to have to do it." Navarro was, and always is, the consummate ringleader of the show. His tight chops, classic black bucket hat and dangling cigarette make for a larger than life presence that he's more than comfortable with. As Jerry Cantrell tore through a gate-busting rendition of Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak," Navarro played to the crowd channeling energy right through his fret board into a rapturous lead. As the ashes dangled from his cigarette, he smiled at the crowd. You can't mess with that. These legendary personalities in Camp Freddy are kings of rock and roll, and this legendary venue is their court. Another big moment came when B-Real and Sen Dog of Cypress Hill hit the stage for "Rock Superstar." Navarro cracked another joke, "These two just wandered over from the Rainbow." However, that was true. Navarro played the song's creepy sampled intro on his PRS, and B-Real rocked the crowd, sparking the most bumping and grinding all night. Everybody in attendance wants to be a "Rock Superstar," that's why they're at Camp Freddy. So it was only fitting that the band tore through that hip hop-rock crossover classic. Other guests that brought the house down included Def Leppard's Vivian Campbell. However, the biggest surprise was Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Both brought their own flare and personality to the set, making for an even more special show. However, the centerpiece of this show was Taylor. This isn't the crowd that the masked purveyor of metal normally plays to. When Navarro introduced him as "Corey from Slipknot and Stone Sour," most of the girls in the audience looked a tad bit bewildered. If anyone can overcome a crowd that doesn't "get it" off the bat though, it's Taylor. He?ll rock all the Chanel and Christian Dior right off of you, and that?s what he did. Once Mike Inez emerged with a bass guitar behind him and Cantrell flanked him at stage left, he commented, "Can I just say that this is the most surreal moment of my entire fucking life." Then the band kicked right into Alice In Chains' classic "Them Bones." Corey's voice proved hypnotic, and he channeled the spirit of Layne Staley right in the room. No one could take their eyes off of him. Alice In Chains was certainly an influence, but here he got to say thanks. After that the shirtless Taylor dried himself off, and the sold out audience couldn?t get enough. So he laughed, "Anybody heard of a band called Free? You know what song we're going to give you, right?" "Alright Now" has never sounded more alive or vibrant as it did with Navarro ripping the lead, and Taylor crooning. Then to later on see Chad Smith and Matt Sorum drumming together, the night proved utterly epic. So, you want to be a rock superstar? Just do what Cypress Hill and Corey Taylor did, and spend a summer night at Camp Freddy. http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/news/article/0,,4684859,00.html Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: CheapJon on May 16, 2008, 03:01:16 PM damn how cool is that.. i've always wanted to see corey with camp freddy or something like that and now that he was there he appearantly were fucking awesome, hope there's good video of it

So let me clarify.. Your "phony" characterization of Morrison is based soley on your opinion that his British accent is too thick for a British citizen who now resides in LA and that he's just a musician who frequently plays with real rockstars on a regular basis with a band (Camp Freddy) he is a founder member of? That makes sense... ::) Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: AdZ on May 18, 2008, 03:08:41 PM No, I never said it was based on that.

Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: Falcon on May 18, 2008, 05:17:52 PM How would you prefer Mr. Morrison carry himself? Well, like less of a self righteous prick? First he's too British, then a phony and now a "self righteous prick"? A bit too broad of a generalization for me to take any kind of serious. On a more educated note... He's a guy who's made his way up through the ranks despite nearly 10 years of addiction issues that would have killed most. Finally got a break in '01 and parlayed that gig into a successful career in multiple facets of the entertainment industry while never forgetting where he came from and those who helped him along the way. Not exactly the qualities of the described "self righteous prick". As Mr. Slovak said earlier, ridiculous... Dave is slightly sensitive - or he's had humour-bypass surgery. I joke around, but he doesn't get any of it. Everything is taken literally. Billy Morrison I liked a lot, I didn't even know he was English - he's from sunny Brixton. A bit more Week 3 info from www.mattsorum.tv Wow Another incredible week with Freddy at the Roxy. Kind of a long one today, started press early afternoon with Classic Rock magazine then photoshoot with Ross Halfin. after that did interviews. at 5pm the big soundcheck started always kind of crazy. everyone shows up at once. this gig was Budgie ( souixie n the banshees) Terri Nunn (Berlin) Corey Taylor Slipknot, Stone Sour) Jerry Cantrell and Mike Inez, Cypress Hill Billy Duffy, Mark McGrath, Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) Corey Parks ( Nashville Pussy) Vivian Campell ( Def Leppard) so had a crazy soundcheck u know? anyway lots of songs to learn and was still a bit burnt from my opening the night before. I did press right after for a couple of hours then ran home for a quick shower> got home and laid down and woke up 5 minutes before I had to announce Darling Stilettos. Great gig and more fun next week. Matt Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: FunkyMonkey on May 19, 2008, 07:58:02 PM Interview
Dave Navarro of Camp Freddy Mon, 19 May 2008 12:13:10 Summer camp is rarely this much fun Camp Freddy is the musical equivalent of The Super Friends or The Justice League. It's an all-star group of A-list musicians that get together on special occasions to bust out classic covers. Currently, they've got a residency at The Roxy for May. Even though it's not a super secret hideout in Antaractica, it's the perfect place for core band members Dave Navarro [Jane's Addiction, Panic Channel, Red Hot Chili Peppers], Matt Sorum [Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver], Donovan Leitch, Chris Chaney [Jane's Addiction], Billy Morrison [The Cult], the residency's MC Mark McGrath [Sugar Ray] and guests to showcase their awesomeness. Each show has brought out rock's cream of the crop in terms of "Super Friends," from Slashand Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols to Chester Bennington of Linkin Park and Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour. In fact, the dressing room scene before the band takes the stage could very well be cut right from a Grammy party. Dave Navarro sits shirtless on a leather couch, relaxing before the show. He's mellow, but quite cheery nonetheless. He's Camp Freddy's ringleader, in a sense. Tonight, there's a guest he's psyched to play with again, drummer Chad Smith of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Chad glances over and exclaims, "Do you know the Show 'Em Enough to Win story?" Dave does, but I don't. Thankfully, Chad's thrilled to tell it. "Back in the '50s, on the East Coast, Jackie Gleason was the biggest entertainer. On the West Coast, it was Milton Berle?'Uncle Milton.' There was a big talk of who had the biggest 'member' in the industry. Who better to referee that than Frank Sinatra? So they all met in Vegas and went up to Frank's room. Frank was kind of in the Milton camp. Gleason shows up with his boys. Frank goes, 'Jackie, let's see it.' Bam, Jackie puts it on the table. Frank says, 'Milton, just show 'em enough to win!'[Laughs]" Everyone in the intimate, yet ornate dressing room, from Mark McGrath to Billy Morrison, erupts with laughter, and Smith flashes a huge grin. Just another day at Camp. Reclining on the couch, Navarro's one of the coolest guitar gods that you can meet. He speaks softly, but rocks a big riff. The guy does not mess around on stage, and every show, he rips out his favorites with the Camp. Right before hitting the stage, he took some time to give ARTISTdirect an exclusive interview about why this camp rules. Is this your most fun musical endeavor? Dave: It's supposed to be fun, and that's the big idea behind it. We all have big lives outside of this, and we primarily come together to celebrate the music that we grew up listening to with friends, peers and sometimes, mentors. That's the fun that you're picking up on, and that's the primary objective behind the whole thing. That fun's been missing from rock and roll. It's so important to get that release and have a good time. Dave: It is, and the audience knows every single song in the set. They pretty much know every person that comes on stage too. So those two things combined makes the show undeniably fun. The chemistry you guys have is very powerful. It's amazing how kinetic the connection is between all of you on stage, because you aren't all in one "standard" band that rehearses all the time together. Dave: Well, we've all been friends for years and years. We've come up in different bands, respected one another, learned each other's songs, hung out and got into a lot of trouble together. That stuff translates. When someone we don't know very well joins us on stage, there's an excitement that we all share. Because every single show is different, we never run into a routine where I'm looking at a set saying, "Oh no, I have the same eight songs to play that I've been playing for the past six months." We never have that stale attitude, because every night is fresh. You must feed off the energy from the first-time guests as well. Would you say it's invigorating to jam with Camp Freddy newbies? Dave: Yeah, it's a totally different animal. It's fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, and it's cool. We roughly run through stuff at sound check. If it sounds great, we do it. If it sounds like shit, we do it anyway [Laughs]. Ultimately, it's the moment we're after, more than the perfection of sound. Isn't that what rock and roll's really about? Dave: For me it is. It always has been. It's like last week when Tommy Lee got up from out of the blue. We didn't know he was coming. He just showed up and played during our set. We kind of got thrown off, because we hadn't rehearsed with him, but it was still an incredible moment. To have Matt Sorum and Tommy Lee rocking together was amazing. Tonight, we're going to have Mr. Chad Smith playing. It's been awhile since I've struck a note with him. I'm super excited that Chad's here. Corey Taylor from Slipknot is coming tonight. He's insanely good. He's just a mindblowing singer. He's singing a little Van Halen, and he's doing "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains. I'm very impressed with that guy. I'm super excited about that. I've never played with him before, but I've decided that I'm an honorary member of Slipknot now [Laughs]. I'm going start going by "Number 10" or "10 and a half," whatever it takes [Laughs]. Show 'em enough to win! [Laughs] Chad: It's been too long since we've played, we're going to make a racket! Do you think Camp Freddy could only happen in LA? Dave: Well, this just happens to be where everybody lives [Laughs]. It'd be difficult to take it on the road, because everybody has other gigs and other jobs here. This residency at The Roxy is perfect, because we just come from home and go home. It couldn't be easier, and it couldn't be more convenient and more fun. Being here at The Roxy is really appropriate for us, because this is where a lot of us came from. My first album ever was recorded here?Jane's Addiction's XXX album. So it's got to hold a real special significance for you? Dave: I guess it does. I never really thought of that, until we talked about it just now [Laughs]. I'm just busting them up. You're fucking lovin' me, huh? [Laughs] How did the idea for the residency come up? Dave: Matt and Billy were sitting over a latte. They have these lattes that they do. They were having breakfast and just bandying about some ideas. The idea came up. We all have each other's email addresses. There's this Camp Freddy e-mail list. So Billy shot out an email that said, "Guys, are you interested in doing this residency at The Roxy?" I just wrote back, "Ok." Everyone else wrote back, "Ok." That was it. The idea was born. It's like a gathering of superheroes with this secret e-mail list. Dave: I like that comparison! It's cool. That's how it works. It's not like a big organization where it's an issue. If someone can't make it, someone fills in. When Matt was on tour with Velvet Revolver, Stephen Perkins would sit in. When I'm gone, Billy Duffy of The Cult or Vivian Campbell from Def Leppard will sit in. There's never a shortage of great players in this town. It seems like L.A. really fosters that creative spirit within artists. Would you say that's the case? Dave: I don't know. New York really gives L.A. a run for its money in terms of creativity. In terms of rock musicians, I think the majority of them are here, for sure. Tourists come here looking for the history at The Whisky, The Roxy and The Rainbow. Dave: They also want to see Times Square! [Laughs] There are some sights in New York. They've got some ideas like the Statue of Liberty. Really though, I could find myself sitting with the same cast of characters for lunch on any given day during the week. "It's really not anything more than a public display of our friendship." Oohh, pull quote! [Laughs] [To Billy Morrison:] Billy, I came up with the pull quote for the story. "A Camp Freddy show is like a public display of our friendship." Billy: You couldn't pay for that kind of press! Dave: No, he could pay me [Laughs]. Do these shows inspire you to go home and create? Dave: Of course I do, but I'm always pretty inspired by just living in this town and having the artist community at my disposal. I live so close to it. The beautiful thing is that Billy and I do a radio show on Saturdays, so we're pretty connected at all times. This is more like an exorcism for me. It's not like a creative experiment, because we didn't write anything. We're not doing anything new. We are a cover band, but it's almost like a release. It's some kind of kinetic release. I guess. ?A Camp Freddy show is like a public display of our friendship? Is there one song that's perfect for Camp Freddy? Dave: Well, every show, it's tradition that we close with Iggy Pop's "I want to be your dog." Every single member that performed that night comes out during that song so we'll have like eight guitarists and six vocalists. Everyone we invited down comes out for the finale. So I would say that song. Our version and performance of that song pretty much defines what the band's about. ?Rick Florino 05.19.08 http://artistdirect.com/nad/news/article/0,,4685113,00.html Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: Smoking Guns on May 20, 2008, 12:59:44 AM Damn Corey Taylor sounds awesome!!!

Oh yeah, they sang Song Two by Blur! Donovan Rocks Antmusic I am telling you better then the original artist Adam Ant(Don't tell him I said that) Sugarfoot drummed to "Brown Sugar" (Sugarfoot has recorded with the likes of Madonna Elton John and such, but trust me HE ROCKED!) The singer from the Deftones rocked some Alice in Chains with Jerry Cantrell on guitar. Its like Rock Star Karaoke and I love it! I don't want MAY to end!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tonight in Rock: Camp Freddy Packs Up The insane madness that is Camp Freddy comes to an end tonight for their May residency at The Roxy. If you know nothing about the project, it's a loose conglomerate of old school rockers (Dave Navarro, Billy Morrison, Scott Weiland, etc) who put together jam sessions of sorts, and always with bigger name special guests. Tonight there are promises of big surprises and we can only take an educated guess based on mumblings that there will be appearances by Juliette Lewis and Billy Idol (and many more). Next month's Roxy residency will be Travis Barker and A.M. http://laist.com/2008/05/29/tonight_this_we_8.php Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: Falcon on May 30, 2008, 04:30:29 PM Thanks to poster Emily and www.billymorrison.net/weblog for the following on the CF Roxy gig of last night, 5/29:
"Who didn't show up would be a better question. This is the best I can do, here is my blog from myspace.(I left off Billy Duffy and Jerry Cantrell since they have rocked with us the whole time!): Camp Freddy wrapped up their 5 show Residency at the Roxy last night and what a way to wrap it up! It would be nice If I could remember the long list of special guests, but there were so many it all seems very blurry now... Maybe I would remember the special guests but my jaw dropped when Robby Krieger from the Doors walked out onto that stage! And Billy Idol. Billy Idol. Billy Idol. (Can you tell I am a fan?) Juliette Lewis was there and I knew she was in a band but had never seen her perform. She really rocked Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. The music was rocking the house as usual. It is hard because I go from rocking out to be in complete awe from moment to moment. The stage presence of Camp Freddy is a Rock N Roll Force to be reckoned with. Billy, Matt, Donovan, Chris and Dave as a group are completely awesome and fun to watch. Then they start bringing out guest after guest and you get lost in the moment. I love live music. And Camp Freddy is live rock n roll at it's finest. Other guests included the singer from 311, the singer from train, the drummer from 9 inch nails, the vocalist from static x, uhhhh (I am sorry I need to catch up with the newer musicians I am so stuck in the past musically), Whoever was drumming for Billy Idol was AWESOME but I don't know who it was, if anyone does let me know... There was a lot of others and they were ALL talented. Oh, and some dude from Lost came on and played guitar that was cool for the Lost fans in the house." Idol, Stevens close out Camp Freddy residency at Roxy May 30, 2008 1:49pm Summer camp is officially over. Rock ?n? roll summer camp courtesy of Camp Freddy, that is. The supergroup of Los Angeles-area rockers, consisting of Dave Navarro, Billy Morrison, Matt Sorum, Donovan Leitch and Chris Chaney, ended its monthlong residency at the Roxy last night with a bang ? landing Billy Idol as closing guest. ?This one?s for you, Jonesy,? a smiling Idol said before he launched into ?Dancing With Myself? from the stage to a sold-out, rapturous audience obviously clued in to the evening?s special guest (fashion selections among the aging Idol groupies were verging on tragic). But despite the title of the tune, Idol was not dancing with himself Thursday evening ? he brought with him a few special guests. Idol was joined onstage with longtime guitarist Steve Stevens and the Doors? Robby Krieger, both of whom helped give the three-song final act a precious feel in spirit of the May celebration of all things rock at the Roxy. The sneering ?80s icon began the last set of the evening with an extended, metal-tinged version of ?L.A. Woman,? which took on obvious significance given the location of the gig on the Strip and Krieger?s presence onstage. The former Generation X singer seemed to be having the time of his life onstage, even doling out a few trademark Idol sneers with a wink as if it were 1984. For Idol fans, the true highlight of the night was a song that broke big that very year, ?Rebel Yell.? Without the slick synths the track is known for, ?Rebel Yell? with Camp Freddy was a monster. Stevens? guitar work was searing and Idol was in full-on icon mode, pumping his fist into the air, seemingly genuinely into the moment, despite presumably loathing the tune after how popular it was in the 1980s (it was one of his signature hits). Other highlights of the final installment of Camp Freddy?s Roxy residency included Juliette Lewis? reverential takes on X?s ?Los Angeles,? Van Halen?s ?Ain?t Talkin? ?Bout Love? and AC/DC?s ?Dirty Deeds.? Earlier in the evening, 311?s Nick Hexum actually pulled off a convincing but perhaps too-karaoke-perfect version of the Clash?s ?White Man in Hammersmith Palais,? but the crowd response was tepid at best. These were rock fans with a capital R, hell-bent on seeing guests like Alice in Chains? Jerry Cantrell tear it up with Freddy onstage, and no one here was copping to even knowing who Hexum was. Regardless, most everyone was happy just to be inside the venerable Sunset Boulevard venue late Thursday night, if only to say goodbye (for now, anyway) to the best house band on the Strip for a while. Here is the complete set list from the final installment of Camp Freddy at the Roxy: Cheap Trick, ?Hello There? Blur, ?Song # 2″ Black Sabbath, ?Paranoid? w/Wayne Static on vocals (Static X) The Clash, ?White Man in Hammersmith Palais? w/Nick Hexum on vocals X, ?Los Angeles? w/Juliette Lewis + Donovan duet Van Halen, ?Ain?t Talkin? ?Bout Love? w/John 5 (Rob Zombie), Lewis AC/DC, ?Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap? w/Lewis, Chris Vrenna (Marilyn Manson, NIN) Oasis, ?Rock ?n? Roll Star? w/Billy Duffy (The Cult) The Cult, ?Lil? Devil? w/McGrath on vocals, Duffy KISS, ?Rock and Roll All Nite? w/McGrath, Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) Alice in Chains, ?Man in the Box? w/Leah Duors (McQueen), Cantrell Sex Pistols, ?EMI? w/McGrath on vocals, Naveen Andrews on guitar (actor, ?Lost?) Led Zeppelin, ?Whole Lotta Love? w/Pat Monahan on vocals (Train), Robby Krieger The Doors, ?L.A. Woman? w/Billy Idol, Steve Stevens & Brian Tichy (Billy Idol), Kreiger Billy Idol, ?Dancing With Myself? w/Idol, Stevens, Tichy Billy Idol, ?Rebel Yell? w/Idol, Stevens, Tichy The Stooges, ?I Wanna Be Your Dog? w/McGrath, Cantrell, Stevens and others. ? CAMP FREDDY?s final sold-out show of their month-long May residency at The Roxy in West Hollywood culminated last night (May 29) with a special appearance by Billy Idol. Idol, guitarist Steve Stevens and drummer Brian Tichy treated the packed house to a cover of The Doors? "LA Woman," also featuring The Doors own Robbie Krieger on guitar along with CAMP FREDDY. The crowd went wild when Idol, Stevens, Tichy and CAMP FREDDY--BILLY MORRISON, DAVE NAVARRO, MATT SORUM, DONOVAN LEITCH and CHRIS CHANEY--launched into Idol?s classic hits "Dancing with Myself" and "Rebel Yell." Another highlight of the night was a duet by Juliette Lewis and LEITCH on X?s ?Los Angeles.? In a surprise twist, while millions of ?Lost? fans were at home watching the two-hour season finale of the hit show, Naveen Andrews (?Sayid? on the show) joined CAMP FREDDY onstage to play guitar on the Sex Pistols? ?EMI.? Andrews also joined in the all-star CAMP FREDDY finale of The Stooges? ?I Wanna Be Your Dog,? when Olympic Gold Medalist snowboarder Shawn White also came to the stage to lend his vocal pipes. Earlier in the night, Train?s Pat Monahan belted out a powerful rendition of Led Zeppelin?s "Whole Lotta Love" with Krieger on guitar. The star-studded night also featured special appearances from the following additional music guests: Nick Hexum (311), Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains), Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray), Chris Vrenna (Marilyn Manson, Gnarls Barkley, NIN), Wayne Static (Static-X), John5 (Rob Zombie), Leah Duors (McQueen) and the all-female punk rock dance group the Darling Stilettos (featured each week). But my most memorable moments were the times when I'd catch eyes with Billy or Donovan and we would just start laughing because we knew what each other was thinking." - Dave Navarro Title: Re: Matt & Camp Freddy - May Roxy Residency Post by: FunkyMonkey on June 04, 2008, 11:32:44 PM Live Review
Camp Freddy - The Roxy, Los Angeles Tue, 03 Jun 2008 16:31:59 The residency ends on a high note Camp Freddy's five-week residency at The Roxy had a Hollywood ending. This is the Sunset Strip we're talking about. What else would you expect? The final, triumphant scene played out with Dave Navarro, Robby Krieger of The Doors and Billy Idol all on the same stage. It was a veritable cavalcade of rock 'n' roll legends celebrating music and their friendship. After four weeks of jaw-dropping performances and one surprise guest after another, Camp Freddy closed out their last Roxy show with a bang. It was the biggest and best Camp Freddy performance of the five-gig residency, and it left the sold out crowd salivating for more. The show began just like the others. Navarro, Donovan Leitch, Chris Chaney, Billy Morrison and Matt Sorum powered through high-energy renditions of Cheap Trick's "Hello There" and Blur's "Song 2." Instantly, the sweaty crowd started dancing and jumping around. In fact, many of the faces were familiar to Camp Freddy, as the diehard fans all made sure to show up for the last hurrah at Camp. Right after "Song 2," Navarro exclaimed, "Now I'd like to introduce Nick Hexum from 311." However, he and the crowd both got a surprise when Wayne Static, the throaty mainman of cyber-metal maestros Static-X, emerged from stage right. Navarro joked, "That's not Nick! It's Wayne Static!" The crowd cheered, and Wayne sauntered to the microphone. His trademark hair stretched two-feet high, and his goatee dangled about 12-inches off his chin. As always, Wayne proved primed to explode. Navarro kicked off a heavy gain version of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid," and Wayne ripped it. His industrial metal wail brought the song to life with a Terminator-style violence. The sweat poured off the stage and off the audience as everyone kept grooving to Wayne's "Evil Disco" tweaking of the classic metal track. He was all smiles too, keeping it fun. Finally, Nick Hexum came out for the next track, a fun collaboration on "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" by The Clash. He infused a reggae funk swagger into the song as he got lost in each and every line. The tri fecta of hard rock to follow would ignite the packed Roxy. Juliete Lewis hit the stage for searing renditions of X's "Lost Angeles," Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap." She gyrated around like a female Mick Jagger, nailing each of the songs with a punky, rock 'n' roll gusto. After belting out "Rock 'N' Roll Star" by Oasis, Billy Morrison asked regular guest Billy Duffy, "What are you wearing?" Duffy smirked and responded, "My Sorum Noce leather jacket, of courseit's perfect for rock shows!" It was a subtle and funny plug for Sorum NoceCamp Freddy drummer Matt Sorum's boutique couture men's clothing line with designer Max Noce. Everyone laughed, and it was another moment that all of the entertainment business elite in the crowd could appreciate. The best part of Camp Freddy is that it marries a feeling of suave L.A. superstar power with pure rock energygiving the camp a sunny location somewhere beautiful between Rodeo Drive and Sunset Blvd. Jerry Cantrell collaborated on a catchy and groove-driven "Man In the Box" with Leah Duors of McQueen. Her voice brought the song a strange vulnerability. The most amazing moment saw Robby Krieger of The Doors join Camp Freddy on stage. Dave Navarro described him as one of the men "That started the Sunset Strip." He played a rocking version of "Whole Lotta Love" with Pat Monahan from Train doing a faithful and worthy Robert Plant impersonation. The ending then saw Krieger blaze through Doors' classic "L.A. Woman" with Billy Idol on vocals. It was utterly perfect, as Camp Freddy's always packed with those kind of girls Jim Morrison immortalized on tape. Idol finished off "Dancing With Myself" and "Rebel Yell" with the all-star cast, before one more group gathering on "I Wanna Be Your Dog." In the end, you couldn't script an ending this good, and every performer got his closeup. It was even better than most Hollywood endings. Let's hope there's a sequel soon.
