i hear those lyrics too, but i dont understand how it can be thought of as a one in a million moment. i didn't think the song containecd any derogatory terms at all.

Sure, its no where near as offensive as One in a Million. Although some will question the term Your own kind and blow it out of all proportion

i dont think anyone will do that, he's not saying anything offensive at all!

On live versions, I heard the first line as

It's like a walk in the park for myself

but listening to the new version, it does sound like from the cell.

I'm sure the second line is

Now you?re keeping your own kind in hell

I think those lyrics were done by people listening to bootlegs (possibly not very good ones?).

I see the song as a criticism of the Chinese government, and the words your own kind being a reference to the Chinese people. Just my take...

I'd always heard "Like your keeping your own kind of hell," but I don't see it being a big deal either way.

Not being there I don't have a clue about how china is but apparently China is fast changing as we speak.

I think it can be a metaphor for a despotic /monopolistic state on any scale.

I think it's: "Like if your ass from your head you could tell" haha

When they performed it in 2002, it was "And when their arms reach out for your help" but it's definitely not that in the demo.

For those two lines, I hear

When your Great Wall rocks, blame yourself
Like if your eyes were in your head, you could tell

China is changing very fast. Its becoming like everywhere else in the western world. Some will see it as better, and some will see it as worse. The ones making money will see it as better, and the ones that become worse off than when it was communist state* will see it as worse.
The grass is always greener on the other side ;D

Axl needs to get a move on a release the album before its out of date.

HMV seem to know something:

*China is still a communist state.
It will take years for the old people to die out and for communism to become completely eradicated.

there are always conservative people in any community. I guess communism and despotism are two different things tho.

According to wiki, Communism is a socioeconomic structure that promotes establishment of a classless, stateless society based on common ownership of the means of production. This doesn't sound like china or any communist nation but a bit like the world of Internet. maybe the idea itself and democracy aren't exactly incompatible.

I don't remember axl said anything about the ideology but he referred to the oppressive government.

For those two lines, I hear

When your Great Wall rocks, blame yourself
Like if your eyes were in your head, you could tell

from the leak I hear:
you think you got it all locked up inside
and if you feed them enough they'll die
its like a walk in the park from a cell
now your keeping your own kind in hell
when you pray for us blame yourself
as if your ass were your head you could tell

and your out of time

the lines written like this i'm not sure of..

but if you listen to the boston bootleg from 02 axl sings:

you think you got it all locked up inside
and if you feed them enough they'll die
its like a walk in the park from a cell
and now your keeping your own kind in hell
and if your great wall rots blame yourself (this can also be: and while you pray for us blame yourself)
while their arms reach out for your help
and i'm out of time

and from a bootleg from chiba 2007 he sings:
you think you've got them all locked up inside
and if you feed them enough they'll die
its like a walk in the park from a cell
and now your keeping your own kind in hell
and while your great wall rots blame yourself (this can also be: and while you pray for us blame yourself)
while their arms reach out for your help
and your out of time

maybe it's a possibility that when we think he sings "it's like a walk in the park from a cell" he might sing "it's like a walk in the park for myself" who knows :P

anyway since the chiba bootleg is the most recent i think that is what we'll hear on the record..

HTGTH is not just a message board, guys.. there's an ass load of other things too.. such as LYRICS! lol  ::)

 It don't really matter
You'll find out for yourself
No, it don't really matter
I'm gonna leave this thing to, somebody else

If they were missionaries
Real time visionaries
Sitting in a Chinese stew
To view my disinfatuation

I know that I'm a classic case
Watch my disenchanted face
Blame it on the Falun Gong
They see the end and you can't hold on, now

Cause it would take a lot more hate than you
To stop the fascination
Even with an iron fist
All they've got to rule the nation
But all I got is precious time

It don't really matter
Guess I'll keep it to myself
No, it don't really matter
It's time I look around for somebody else

'Cause it would take a lot more time than you
Have got for masturbation
Even with your iron fist
All they've got to rule the nation
But all I got is precious time
All they've got to fool the nation
But all I got is precious time

<Robin Finck solo>

It don't really matter
I guess you'll find out for yourself
No, it don't really matter
So you can hear it now from somebody else

You think you've got it all locked up inside
And if you beat 'em enough they'll die
It's like a walk in a park from a cell
And now you're keeping you're own kind in hell
And if your Great Wall rots blame yourself
As if your head were your ass you can tell
And we're out of time...

The song has been played live on many occasions.
Beside's, Axl's on record as speaking about leaks with audiences.
He jests with them like he was behind them all along ;)

redsquare, I disagree with your inference that "he was behind them all along."  we've heard countless times that the leaks weren't meant to be heard.  don't ya think a more likely source would be disgruntled former producers or a disgruntled former player?  just sayin'.

btw, on topic, I agree with estranged 063087.  That's what I hear.

I don't know, to every person there's a different meaning.  To me, it's kind of like telling the tyrants the "illusion of freedom" they impose on their citizens is like masturbation.  It's basically empty and void of meaning.  There's no connection to reality.  Yes, you rule, but eventually your corrupt regime is exposed for what it really is...unjust.  In time, it will be exposed...hence, the Great Wall rots.  The great symbol of government power rots.

pretty cool stuff.  lyrics can be tough to decipher, especially when they are written in such a "stream of consciousness fashion."  It's kick-ass stuff.   8)

save that the wall wasn't built by the government. It was by ancient kings and emperors. :P

^ Really? (said in sarcastic tone)

It's symbolic.  Ya know?  Metaphoric?  Like most things in China, who do you think owns it?  Very good!  the government.
