Title: Hear GN'R anywhere random?
Post by: duga on June 16, 2003, 04:49:29 PM
I was walking in the by Swedish standards large town of Uppsala with some fresh beers in my bag when I suddenly halted: "That sounds familiar... ". Out from a "Jack n Jones" clothes shop I hear: PRETTY TIED UP! I mean... a GNR song unknown to common people on the street in 2003, that's fantastic  ;D

You mean that we have McDonalds? ;)

We have two.....  [hihi]

But that's a weird place to hear a GN'R song, especially something that isn't a hit or anything like that. Hearing Sweet Child O' Mine or November Rain wouldn't been weird at all, but New Rose?

I go to a BodyPump class at my gym twice a week (it's a cardio-barbell class set to music, it originates from Australia). Anyway, they usually play Sweet Child O Mine during the bench press track--it's gotten to a point that whenever I hear SCOM, I feel like doing bench presses.  [rofl] Although recently they've dropped SCOM in favour of Christina Aguilera's Dirty song.  >:(

Today I happened to catch a glimpse of a show about local news in 2003.

It was a look at the biggest "local" (local as in Western Sweden) news that had happened during 2003. One of the stories was about this small town building a concert hall for several million Swedish Krona. The town is located out on the "prairie" and they have a nicer concert hall than we do.

Anyway, they were showing clips of kids using the stages and on one of them this band was playing a song.... It was Welcome To The Jungle.  ;D

By the looks of it, those guys couldn't have been old when Appetite For Destruction was released.

I was at my fav bar here in Cologne just two hours ago, sippin a few drinks with a friend. When we walked in they played You Could Be Mine. Then they played Creed (I hate that band) and I complained and said to my buddy something like: "Snakepit would be cool now. Lives Sweet Drug or Serial Killer." And after Creed, as if they read my mind, they played Serial Killer, The Truth and Landslide. Last week they played nearly the entire UYI II. The owner loves GN'R as much as I do. Sometimes I carry GN'R members solo records with me (Gilby, Izzy, Bucket, etc.) and most times I ask they play it.
Location: "The Cave", Kyffh?user Str., near Barbarossaplatz. If you ever visit Cologne, go there! You'll love it!

Thanks, Jarno! Are these songs popular out there or are they as "alternative" as Pretty Tied Up?
As I said, in Brazil everybody knows So Fine and Used to Love Her, but just a few are familiar to PTU.

I heard Estranged the other day on one of the major rock stations by where I live.  It was a Cleveland based station I believe.  Its kind of weird to hear that particular song on the radio because its so long and is rarely ever played.  GN'R gets a lot of love on the radio around here.  Songs I hear everday on the radio are, wttj, brownstone, pardise, sweet child and nov. rain.  :smoking: :smoking:

I found myself in this bar one night, there were pole dancers in there. Anyway, I got chatting to one of these pole dancers and before I knew it (about 6 or 7 drinks later) she offered me a special dance and asked me what song would I like. Well I thought for a moment, I was trying to think of a long song. So I said November Rain, she said ok, she would have to go check with the DJ (so see if he had November Rain). She returned to me some moments later, the DJ didn?t have November Rain, although he did have Since I Don?t Have You (that?ll do I said). The funny thing is, she laughed, that song, November Rain, it goes on for some time, I replied, yeah I know with a big grin on my face. That was a good night? : ok:

They play gnr songs on the simpsons alot.  I can think of three off the top of my head.  1. homer buys an RV and him and the kids are in partying, Welcome to the jungle is blaring.  2.  When marge hangs out with her friend (ala thelma and louise) they play something else from appetite, maybe PC, 3.  When Apu has quintuplets they play Welcome to the jungle again.

This one time when I was at Rochester KIAD (art college for you who don't know), I was sitting in the digital media room and we were all talking, and there was a li'l bit of a pause... and I swore that I heard Paradise City coming from somewhere... really quietly. I looked at all the computers and none of them had a music program running at the time, and no one's phone was going off, and I hadn't brought my CD player to college with me...

Oh, and no one else could hear it! I could hear it, not very loud though, I think it was being played in another studio in a different part of the building.

and for those of you who don't know... Rochester KIAD was built by the Bauhaus (the art group, not the goth band), and its a total maze!! Its very simplistic, but inside you really have to know where you're going... it is quite possible that the studio from which I heard PC playing was directly next to the room I was in, but to get to it, I would have had to have gone round the entire building to find the door...

Oh and another time I was watching TV and a commercial for A Knight's Tale came up on the screen and Coma was playing in the background.

They always play Sweet Child O' Mine in the nightclubs i go too, which is great coz its the only rock song they ever play. Although my friend started DJing in one of them and he played Welcome To The Jungle sandwiched between some dance songs, which rocked.

I saw this live show on tv, where anything could happen. Then they got out on the streets and found a gn'r fan and a
Nik and Jay fan (shitty danish pop group). Then you could vote wether you wanted to hear gn'r or Nik and Jay, the funny thing about was that the band that should play the song, was an old country western street band.
Of course gn'r won and then they played the paradise city chorus very fast over and over again. Hilarious. 8)

ibelieveinaxl, I'm just as crazy/paranoid.  NBC's Sunday Night Football played SCOM's intro. as they went to a commercial.

Now, the reason that pricked my ears up is that I think NBC is owned by Universal or vice versa, I'm not sure.  Universal is the entity that has invested quite a few bucks in GNR if I'm not mistaken.  Even if it meant nothing, which I'm sure it did, it was still cool to hear.   8)

They always play Jungle during NASCAR when going on break.  (ABC)

It isn't a sign, but it's always fun to hear GN'R on TV.

There is rarely a sporting event in the U.S. (professional games anyways) where a GNR song isn't played.  This doesn't mean shit about CD coming out.

Last night, was watching CSI Manhattan and the episode opened with SCOM, that was kewl !
Pete Townsend has a contract with CBS and the creators of the CSI'S Teenage Waste Land is the theme for CSI NYC.? They usually have opening songs when the storyline starts though.? It must have been an episode from last year.? Although I heard a reference to GnR on a Comedy recently regarding the delays of Chinese Democracy, also there was another reference that Axl should beat up another clothing designer for being a dick on a sports show.? I don't know who they were referring to.

I saw the great new movie Gone, Baby, Gone, which is co-written and directed by Ben Affleck and stars his younger brother, Casey.  In it, there is a bar scene where Casey Affleck and his business partner/girlfriend are talking to a bartender and in the background you hear the asskicking Lies version of "You're Crazy".  I thought that was pretty cool.

Incidentally, there was another Axl/GN'R reference in another recent major motion picture release, The Kingdom.  In that movie, the FBI team that heads to Saudi Arabia to investigate a bombing of a compound housing US citizens is housed in a gymnasium and locked in from the outside to ensure their safety from anti-US terrorists.  One of the characters, played by Chris Cooper says, "They can't do that (lock them in the gym from the outside).  That's against fire code."  Jennifer Garner's character says "Fire code?  There's no fire code here.  You're in the jungle now, baby."  Jason Bateman's character says "Alright Axl...".

They made another Chinese Democracy reference in the new episode of the show Californication.

I know Tommy does the soundtrack for that show so I'm guessing that he and/or the band is okay with these joke references to CD but I myself find them insulting because it seems to be a "running joke" on that show. ? :-\

But it's still cool that Tommy does the soundtrack.?:headbanger:

So I'm almost to work and I decide to turn on 94.1 WYSP to hear what Opie and Anthony are up to.  I'm surprised to hear the intro to Paradise City...and it's a live performance of PC!  Not Greatest Hits!  I'm pumped and wait in the parking lot blasting the stereo for an extra couple minutes!  PC finishes and it's a commercial for the radio station's newer format of all live music in the morning...next song?  SCOM!  Needless to say, work started a little bit late!!!!

btw, I couldn't figure out what live performance it was...although I do know it was old band stuff.  I can't wait till the new stuff hits!!!!!!!!!!!! :peace:

David Duchovny's character 'Hank' is a book writer.? He crashes a meeting at his agent's office.? Attending the meeting was a Publisher from NY.? The NY Publisher, in an annoyed tone, sayes something to the effect that they've been waiting 7 years for Hank's next book.? Then sarcastically invites Hank to join the meeting by saying "Sit down.? We'll talk about Chinese Democracy."

it wasnt hearing the music that was random for me...just the people listening to it. We were outside at lunch, and a student, trying to look cool, drove by really quickly and blew through a stop sign, the whole while blasting "Its so easy" on his car speakers. doesnt stop at a stop sign, somebody else had the same idea of not stopping...and this guy got wasted. the guy that hit him gets out of his car to try and talk to the guy and probably flip out on him, but this kid was still sittin in his car headbangin listenin to GNR.

According to the BBC's website, one couple on this Saturday's 'Strictly Come Dancing' will be dancing the Paso Doble to 'Live And Let Die'.? It's billed as the GNR version but as the programme uses a house band to cover the songs, it could be kinda interesting to hear what they make of it.

Heard One in a Million being played yesterday at Fopp - which is a music/books/dvd store, so not that random a place really - but its not often you hear that song anywhere these days.  The guys at the desk had it turned up pretty loud as well - nice to hear it booming out in central london!

Changing room chat

It's a hard-rock life for Butcher

THE days of the Scotland team running out at Hampden to the sounds of Runrig's Loch Lomond could be a thing of the past.

There are fears among the Tartan Army this morning that if new assistant manager Terry Butcher gets his way then Guns N' Roses will be blasting out over the Tannoy when Croatia visit these shores for a friendly match next month.

Butcher was unveiled as George Burley's right-hand man at a press conference yesterday, and concerns over the former England captain's nationality have been overtaken by concerns about his taste in music.

Butcher's mobile phone went off during the media call and suddenly the opening bars of Sweet Child o' Mine filled the room as the former Motherwell manager' s ringtone echoed around Cameron House.

It seems that the man who has a liking for England's rose also has a wee thing for Axl Rose.

Butcher's favourite two bands are understood to be Guns N' Roses and Iron Maiden, and it's safe to say he far prefers hard rock to Scottish folk music.

 :)

I was on holiday in Barcelona (great fuckin' city!) for the last few days (february 1st - 5th) and I when I was at the Fnac on Placa de Catalunya (first thing we did) an Axl impersonater was on all of the tv-screens. The sound was off so I didn't "hear" GN'R anywhere random. It was so fuckin' cool though!

I also bought Bach's record there (finally, had to fly all the way to Barcelona to find it).

I was at work one day on my lunch. I was talking with one guy and then some other guy comes in and joins the conversation. We all kind of start arguing and I'm having to be on the defense. Then I say something like "shut the fuck up. I'm trying to eat my damn lunch. Go away! I'm not listening to you guys anymore, I wanna listen to Axl Rose." Then I reach up and turn the radio on and Live and Let Die was on. Fucking coincidence, amazingly awesome.

Over the normal PA they kept playing things like the Top Gun soundtrack and music from Rocky. But over at the Paddock Club (I think it was, it was on the pit lane side of the track at least) they played Sweet Child O' Mine.....
