Title: Torrent kills my internet
Post by: Loaded NightraiN on October 04, 2007, 09:07:28 PM
So I finally got a new computer, and downloaded some Torrents... My laptop is running on wireless, but everytime i try to download, the connection dies... The wireless AND the main DSL connection on the desktop connection... Although when I use dimeadozen, it works fine... Anybody know of some basic troubleshooting I could try??

Thanks!

what program are you using?  i suggest utorrent.

does the connection completely die (disconnect) or is it just super slow?
if so, then you will have to change the upload speed limit.

I had exactly the same thing going on at my former appartment.

I'm guessing you are behind a hardware firewall? (as in a firewall that comes with(in) your DLS proxy.
It can be "fixed" by disabling the firewall atleast.  I have no idea how to do this. And Unsure if you can do it without consulting your ISP.
Exactly WHY the firewall feels it has to fuck up your connection every time you try to use p2p, i have no idea.

if you have a firewall you have to open a port. that is different for each one though so you'd have to look it up.

I'm using utorrent, and it totally disconnects...

How would I go about this??  :hihi:

i suggest use azuerus.

I've tried that and my connection sucks.. I get 5/kb a sec.. It says my NIT needs to be changed... Like i have a clue what that is  ;D

So this only happens when you use a torrent site other then dimeadozen? Thats very strange. I assume the new computer has vista. Could this be the problem? http://apcmag.com/7167/eliminate_vistas_network_bottlenecks or maybe this. http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=271649

Hey thanks man.. when i get home i'll look into those...

Yes the laptop is vista, the desktop is XP...

Oddly enough, the computer I just replaced had XP.. I never tried a torrent on it because it was a piece of shit... I used limewire for the longest time, then all of a sudden it did the same thing to the connection... I just figured limewire was such a pile of turds, that limewire was the problem and not firewalls or anything....

All this help is appreciated everyone, the more suggestions the better!!!

I hope something helps. I can imagine the problem is quite annoying. I assume you do have hardware firewall in the form of a router? That could be the issue too. It also could be your isp doing something in which case you might not be able to do anything. Maybe they're throttling p2p traffic. Who is your isp?

ahhh if you used other file sharing programs, first make sure your computer is free of viruses and spyware.

i'd try scanning with F secure's online scanner:

http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

as for opening a port in your firewall, you have to see which port the torrent program is using and then log in to your firewall/router and set it allow connections from that port.

Fios or DSL? We have Fios and the actiontec router. It took me a little bit to figure out how to port forward with that thing.

Check this website out. http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm Find the model of your router under the belkin section. Then just search for the program you want to open the ports for on the next page. It will give you step by step instructions.
