Navy to alter swastika-shaped barracks

Wed Sep 26, 2:20 PM ET

The Navy will spend as much as $600,000 to modify a 40-year-old barracks complex that resembles a swastika from the air, a gaffe that went largely unnoticed before satellite images became easily accessible on the Internet.

The Navy said officials noted the buildings' shape after the groundbreaking in 1967 but decided against changing it at the time because it wasn't obvious from the ground. Aerial photos made available on Google Earth in recent years have since revealed the buildings' shape to a wide audience.

The Navy approved the money to change the walkways, landscaping and rooftop solar panels of the four L-shaped barracks, used by members of the Naval Construction Force at the Navy's amphibious base at Coronado, near San Diego.

"We don't want to be associated with something as symbolic and hateful as a swastika," Scott Sutherland, deputy public affairs officer for Navy Region Southwest, told the Los Angeles Times.

Online commentators remarked widely about the buildings' resemblance to the Nazi symbol.

Dave vonKleist, host of "The Power Hour," a Missouri-based radio-talk show, said he wrote to military officials calling for action.

"I'm concerned about symbolism," he said. "This is not the type of message America needs to be sending to the world."

The Navy decided to alter the buildings' shape following requests this year by Anti-Defamation League regional director Morris Casuto and U.S. Rep. Susan Davis.

"I don't ascribe any intentionally evil motives to this," Casuto said of the design. "It just happened. The Navy has been very good about recognizing the problem. The issue is over."

Ha, this makes me think back to my college days.  If you looked down at the study cubicles from above, they were also swastikas.  I guess they'll have to re-do the library.  :hihi:

This is just friggin dumb.  $600,000 wasted.  Oh well, at least the money will go to hard working no-bid contractors.  ::)

I wonder if it was designed by Albert Speer Jr.

How wasteful.  The swastika isn't a Nazi symbol, but an ancient symbol, adopted by the Nazis.  It isn't "hateful."  It's just a symbol.  Nazis also had tanks and planes...are we banning those, too?

That's true, the swastika was used as a religious symbol in many religions and cultures - the Nazis pretty much made it synonymous with them which pretty much tainted it.

Yeah...I wouldn't knowingly use it, but blowing $600 K to get rid up one in an architectural design is silly.  It's no worse than some poor kid named Adolf.

EXACTLY!

I was about to ask... What's the problem with the swastika?

Since stolat isn't posting in the thread, I'll just say that this is a threat to people everywhere, especially those somehow loosely connected to the Polish Resistance, and anyone who disagrees is wrong and has no idea what he/she is talking about, which of course includes myself.

It's a disgrace to the OOFJ (Organization Of Flying Jews) and JTG (Jews That Google) that they have to see this.
I can't stand the Political Correctness Police.  Do we have to waste 600K so that an El Al flight going 500 MPH might see these buildings, or some empty suit who works for the DOD or Pentagon sees this or gets an actual complaint and the superiors feel that they should spend $600,000 to change the appearance of a f-ing building.  WTF!  Come on really are there people of Jewish faith that are demanding that the buildings be reconstructed.
What's next the Washington Monument offends a group of eunuchs and should have proper buildings added to the base?
It's as ridiculous as that attempt of a joke.  ^

Yeah, I think they used it facing to the right however. When it faces left, it was meant as a religious symbol.  There is a fire station near me which has them on the building embedded in brick. Surprisingly no on has made a fuss. I never understood how people could let it stay there but there was an article in the local paper explaining it all & how it wasn't related to the Germans. Funny though, most people have no idea it's there unless I point it out to them.

And how did they not notice this when they were looking at the blueprints before constructing it in the first place?

God forbid any money goes to charity - quick, lets modify a building instead!
