Title: Question About Fixing Rust/Chips on Vehicles
Post by: Malcolm on August 31, 2007, 12:46:40 PM
K well I just recently got my moms van from her, 2000 Chevy Venture and we want to fixup the rust spots underneath the doors that were started from rock chips...Now my Grandpa told me not to sand it because within a year it will be rusted twice as bad...So I took a picture of it and was hoping someone on here could give me a few hints or tell me what to do...Thanks in advance

If you are going to fill with epoxy, grind to metal. if you are going to weld, grind to metal. though I am no body man. It looks like it hasn't gone through, if so, grind to metal and fill with glazing.

I'm more of an under the hood guy, so I personally can't help much.

I'd browse through some car forums and look for the body work section(s.) They can be very informative and helpful.

Rust is like cancer to a car- you would need to cut out as much as possible & use a rust neutralizer. Then use some body filler.

If it is over 7 years old how many more years will it get out of it anyway?

If done right, it can be a bitchin' ride.

It's a mini van, don't waste the time/money. Get something with some power to it.

Personally, I'd just be concerned with general upkeep of the vehicle under the hood. How long do you want it to last anyway? Change the oil, hot and often, keep a good eye on the fluids and so on. A little rust may be an eye sore to some, but to others it may add character.  ;D

... my insurance is $400 a month ...

Dude, shop around. That seems excessive. Since it is an older vehicle, you don't really need full coverage.
