Title: Night train
Post by: keithos27 on August 03, 2007, 03:16:53 PM
Hi everyone.  What exactly is the song "Night train" about?  What does it mean to be on the night train?

Thanks,
Keith

We were living in the Gardener Street studio, where we had one little box of a room. We had no money but we could dig up a buck to go down to this liquor store. It happened to have this great wine called Nightrain that would fuck you up for a dollar. Five dollars and you'd be gone. We lived off this stuff.

Go to any cheep ass liquor store here in california/usa and one can pick up a bottle of this "citrus wine" for about 4 bucks. While the flavor isnt the greatest, its super easy to guzzle down (like a wine cooler) and at 17.+% packs a decent punch.

The best strategy for drinking Night Train is to make sure it's ice cold and chug it from a pint glass (allows you to down it faster than straight out of the bottle).  You could also use a beer bong I guess.  If it's ice cold and you pound it, it actually doesn't taste that bad.

You can get hammered for $4-5.  It's a good deal if you're looking to get drunk for cheap

I had it once about 17-18 years ago (just once!)... didn't seem like a big bottle, went down pretty smoothly, actually easier than beer did for me at the time, so I followed it up with a 40oz bottle of beer.  Bad idea.  It's possible I've been living on one lung since then because I might have puked it out of my system that night.

If you drink Night Train any way other than ice cold and really fast, you'll know what Axl means when he says "I'm a mean machine drinking gasoline" in the song

it's in the same family as Mad Dog.  MMMmmmmmmm.....  whenever i drank Mad Dog, night train, wild irish rose, etc. it always made me feel like i did about 10 shots of whiskey and 5 lines of coke. (not a bad combo either.)  drink a whole bottle yerself and be prepared to get into trouble

I've been looking for this stuff in the UK, can't find it anywhere.  Our local is a super cheap place, stocks all kinds of bum wine (like MD 20-20 and Thunderbird) but no Night Train Express and the proprietor won't order it for us either.  Very annoying.

They normally don't sell it in nicer parts of town or rural areas.  If you go to a convenience store or a wine shop in a seedier part of town they'll usually have it there

Ok so,

I had this offer in the latest Night Train thread, but I figured i'd start a new topic so people would be a little more aware!!

I'm gonna see about sending out some Night Train to people(to basically anywhere).. I will need a solid order of 20-24 bottles(as I can only order a case at minimum)..I'm not looking to profit a whole lot, as I will be selling each bottle close to my cost, and shipping will be rounded up... If interested PM me, i'll keep count on orders, and once I have enough, we can discuss payments!! All I will require is a scan of a photo ID!!

PM me if interested!

Don't drink it, for the love of God, just don't.  Gasoline tastes better.  I had some years ago and it made Mad Dog taste like kool-aid in comparison.  Horrible to last forced down drop!!

You're right...

I just found an empty bottle of Nightrain, filled it with water.. It came to 2lbs 9.6oz(thats about 2.6lbs).... I've gotta round that up to 3lbs per bottle to be on the safe side... Plus I want to package these things up really well so you guys dont have broken bottles....

So I recant my statement, i'll send up to 5 bottles in one package for the above price.. Sorry about that guys...

Hmm, but surely packing can't weigh a huge amount.  Would it not be possible to squeeze six bottles in?  I mean, bubble wrap is mainly just fresh air, it can't come close to weighing two pounds..surely?

Flat shipping rate means ANYTHING up to 20lbs is one set price..... I dont set the rates...

Like I said i'd hate to have you guys hafta sift glass and suck carboard, just to drink nightrain.... I've already had some people apolgize because they cant afford the shipping rate.. so everything i buy from ebay from america should cost $40 flat shipping, no because each item is weighed individualy. i rekon if you go to the mail office and weigh a package with just 2 bottles it will be no where near $40. if it is the case where shipping is $40 for 2 bottles then im gonna have to miss out on this one. not because i cant afford but because of the principle. ive looked on the usps site at shipping rates and i see where it says the flat shipping rate, so i see where your coming from and im not having a dig at you. i just dont see why they dont treat every package as individual and price it accordingly.

I just went to my local Liquor store here in Connecticut and asked about Nightrain.  The guy then asked me, "are you a fan of Guns and Roses, or do you just want to get wrecked for cheap"?   He looked in his order book and told me that he can get it in if I want.  So I purchased 2 bottles for $4.89 each.  Doesnt taste nearly as bad as I thought it would, I have only had a taste so far though.  One thing that surprised me is how it says right on the label to serve very cold, as I have not dranken many wines that need to be refrigerated.  ;D Anyway, Just a thought, but it doesnt hurt to go to your local liquor store and ask.

Speaking for myself, I don't dig that kind of language.

Try to elaborate on why you reckon KOHD and Aint it Fun are "pure shit"........you don't like the rhythm, the beat?

I'm of course, talking musically. If you look at the GH setlist, I'm not sure which song it should go after.

That's what I meant when I said that "it doesn't go which the chosen sequence of songs".

Doesn't mean it's not a good song.

When i was first getting into GN'R, Nightrain was one of my favourite songs off of Appetite..., i just loved the riffs and Axl's high pitched screaming at the end, as well as the use of having Axl record his vocals twice and use them together at the ensd verse/chorus.

Watch the language there mate.

Stop telling people how to post here.

We don't have a problem with swearing.

We do have issues with people spamming threads with nonsense.

By using the word mate at the end, my comment wasn't meant to be used as an order.

It's an aussie way of speaking.

I made an observation about the sequence of songs on GH and why I thought Nightrain wasn't on it.

I then explained my post in more detail to the poster.

Is that spamming?

Considering how often you post without adding anything to the discussion, I'd say roughly 9/10 of your posts are spam.

On the contrary, I do believe that my posts do contribute to the discussion.

What I say is always considered.

Though I do agree with you Jarmo, there has been alot of actvity on the board today.

Really?  ???

Anyway... Nightrain is one of the best Guns song... it should have made into the GH without any doubt.

Yes, in answering your question Ines (see not spamming, answering.....)

I'm just bemused as you would be offended by someone saying Fuck on a thread when were actually we're here because we liked a band who are known for having the word Fuck in several of their songs ?

Yes, well Guns N' Roses is a band full of contradictions!

But seriously, why don't you like "Aint it Fun" and KOHD?

Is it possible to ban Stolat ? Or atleast erase her post count again ? ;D

Seriously, Nightrain could have made GH, along with It's So Easy.

The could easely replace Since I Don't Have You and Sympathy For The Devil.

On the subject of the best Nightrain performance, hats off to the Rock Am Ring '06 one. To me that's the best version of the song so far.

Axl's voice and Ron's solo just kick major ass !

I just dislike the whole plodding mess of Heavens Door, its been done to death by other people and reinforced critics opinions that they where becoming this bloated carictature of a once great rock band........Aint It Fun just drags and has no power or balls to it.

Each To Their own

And more to the point why the hell wasn't it included on the greatest hits album ?????????

The Greatest Hits tracklisting was awful and not a good representation of GnR.  They have what 4 or 5 covers on there?  From a band with as much great original material as GnR that sucks

Axl's voice is cool , but the whole feeling like space brain sounds really weird and off.  The izzy part of the solo blew , Ron is awesome but the shredding has to stop he is nailing most of that solo and it sounds good but sometimes the licks are WAY off like the last lick of the solo.

In terms of guitar work and solos this is the best IMO

Well the point is, its a greatest hits.  I think the tracklisting is pretty cack as well, they missed out on several fantastic songs.  But Nightrain only made it to #93 on the US and #17 in the UK.
KOHD; US, wasn't released, UK #2.  Ain't It Fun made #9 in the UK.

So, from a chart position, these songs were the bigger 'hits' than other, far better songs like Nightrain, Mr Brownstone, Dust N Bones, 14 Years, or any other number of songs that would be on a "Best Of" Guns n' Roses.

And that version of Nightrain posted by RageNirvanaNIN is horrible.  I think 'best for gorilla drumming' is an apt summing up.  Has no groove whatsoever.

From what I can remember KOHD was huge. It went down so well with the public, to see the biggest band at the time do a power rock version of the Dylan song. It does represent GN'R and the direction they were going in at the time quite well.

You're allowed 1 bottle a person.  I go to Ontario every year and we are allowed 1 bottle or 1 case of beer per person. But like you said, it is better to be safe and take nothing.

Still no nightrain lol. I'll be in Los Angeles during guns' residency. Does anybody know where I can buy nightrain there? There's this site called bum wine and that lists one address, I'm not sure if they still sell it. That website looks outdated..
