Title: November Rain 2007
Post by: stolat on August 17, 2007, 06:31:58 AM
There was something that really stood out when I heard November Rain at the Adelaide concert.

Just before the last guitar solo (the outro), Axl stopped singing, the band stopped playing and I though to myself. Oh, aren't they going to play the outro. Surely not!

Suddenly, the stage lights went down and a second later, the stage was bathed in a deep blue light. There was a pause and then the song picked up again and the outro was played.

Now, in any stage production you just don't use lights willy nilly. Lighting is used to add to the performance.

So what was the significance of the blue light? And the obvious pause before the outro?

Having spent some time here prior to the concert, my brain just went "oh, The Blues"..........a message for Slash maybe?

Did any one else notice this at the concerts?

Yes, I noticed the lights at the shows too.

I didn't see any hidden messages to former members though.

Maybe I need to start drinking before the shows.....

I was pretty sober there Jarmo! (though the fumes from the hairspray that was keeping my 80s do in place may have been going to my head)........... :hihi: Did most of my drinking in my 20s........

I guess it takes someone who knows certain threatre tricks to understand these things. (Tanks Genesis!) You don't use a blue light and pause for no reason.......

^ that's why I'm hesitant about sharing the story of the "Rocket Queen Bicycle" with you at this stage.......

Yes, it's not that far fetched to think that the lights used are used for a reason.

For example, did you notice that during Patience as Axl sings 'cause the lights are shining bright , the lights actually shine bright?

But to think there's hidden messages to former members is kinda weird.

Erm there's always been a pause before the NR outro, Axl usually used it as a drinks break on the UYI tour.

The story of the "Rocket Queen bicycle"  I can't wait for that one.

Title: Re: November Rain 2007
Post by: stolat on August 17, 2007, 07:52:56 AM
This pause was quite long, in that I thought the song had actually come to an end. It took quite a while for the blue light to come up and then for the music to start again.

In 'shop talk' we call it an 'exaggerated pause'.

Yes, Axl takes quite long pauses before the intro. Yes, there is actually blue lights at their concerts.

Why would you think that the blue lights is a message to Slash?  ??? If you absolutely have to give a reason why they were blue, I would say it was because supposed to look like rain (November Rain).

Title: Re: November Rain 2007
Post by: stolat on August 17, 2007, 08:42:15 AM
Axl made a point of looking up at the blue light, sighed and nodded. The outro was played double time, almost sounded like a 'circus tune'.....

The rain came down later in the form of silver glitter paper and lighting FX.

the nod is probably nothing more then, "let's start the outro" to the rest of the band..

silver glitter tape? i thought that was pyro?

I have no idea whether or not there was a special significance to the lighting effects you mention, stolat, but that blue lighting used during the show was beautiful. ?In fact, I thought that all the effects during the 2006 tour were extremely well done; my memory is appalling these days but I think I remember some green lighting being used in a particularly effective way too.

It's hard to select favourites but the use of the searchlights during the intro and the fan-like lighting during NR which reminded me of the rays of the rising and setting moon, have to be among the highlights for me for the way in which they enhanced the music but didn't detract from it.

there has always been a long pause at that part when played live, its for many reasons

1. dramatacism (axl whats the crowd begging for the outro) the crowd scream and he launches in.

2. at that part opf the song, the song remains in 4/4 time, but the pace picks up...Axl stops so that evryone starts off on the same foot at the same pace.

if there is a message, its well hidden. so well hidden in fact that it has been hidden since the song was first played live over 15 years ago, because there always has been a pause.

In the spirit of all things positive, I guess you had to be there.

Apart from being very sensitive to nuance in performance, I also had binoculars and was sitting directly in Axl's line of sight as he sat at the piano..

? ? ?I'm sure that if they put a night light on the crowd would have just went to sleep...Yes I'm joking to keep it a little more humorous in here.? The threads are starting out with a simple title and quickly turning into stupid, argumentative and pointless rants.
? ? ?I guess some of the young tad poles are getting bored.? Yes colleges give life experience credits out to thoughs who have earned it.? I hate boards that constantly attack everyone while they hide behind the computer screen.? Lighten up people.? I signed on here because there wasn't as much of it so lets not start now.? It thought this place was supposed to be about the band and music we all enjoy and threads of interest not of antagonizing each other under the guise of similar interest.

Bumblefoot plays a acoustic guitar first. Then, he goes off stage, get his Flying V and then, outro starts.
well, someone probably took Ron's Flying V just to delay the outro.

I went to 3 of the Aussie shows - oh my God I noticed that blue light too, it was truly amazing.   :nervous:

So there was a blue light just before the outro.  So what?   Maybe it means Axl likes watching blue movies.

During the show there was red lights, yellow lights green lights - maybe there was a hidden message about traffic lights?????

Fuck man this thread ?- now I have truly heard everything!!!!

What did Axl say again about living your life.......?

Title: Re: November Rain 2007
Post by: stolat on August 17, 2007, 10:55:43 AM
Well, why didn't he use a red light, green light or orange light at that moment?

As I said before, a lighting designer chooses colours very carefully.

For those people who posted in another thread asking if "The Blues" was about Slash, think about it.
.........And don't shoot the messenger  ::)

Well, why didn't he use a red light, green light or orange light at that moment?

Because that colour might not fit the song. Some people see colours whilst listening to music. This might be the colour Axl sees or the colour that the lighting crew sees and decids its a good colour to use for that part of the song.

I also had binoculars and was sitting directly in Axl's line of sight as he sat at the piano..

Was he sat infront of the birds you were trying to spot? If so, I recomend not going to a concert to bird watch... Its pretty logical.

Blue is a cold color and it's considered calming.

It's also "sad".

Did you ever hear the phrase "Feeling blue"?

If that is directed at me then yes. I know, i just figured i would put a lesser obvious, possible reason to why the colour blue is used.

Strange thread, I don't know if anyone else here "feels" colors while listening to music, I always feel red when I hear NR, SCOM is red also, for Estranged it's blue and PC is yellow and so on.

Or maybe it stood out for you because it was the show you attended. Was it any different to any of the other shows you attended, if any? It would logically be different from any bootlegs you've watched.

As others here have mentioned, Axl has always taken a pause there and many of them have been on the longer side.  I think the pause is for 2 reasons:

1) Axl takes a break/Drink
2) It just adds a more dramatic effect for live performances

However, the blue light, "a message to slash"?  That's a hoot.  Now, they could use blue lights as a signal to the lovely ladies in the crowd.  This lets them know that Axl has blue balls on a particular night and that he is in dire need of a blow job

The Blue light is so clearly a message to Slash! Like what else could it be?  That's obviously what Axl and the band intended, before doing the outro...honestly, do you want to dissect Axl's choice of socks too? Maybe they're a message to Duff?

The lights were great at all the shows but I dont think there was any message to anyone. Once the lights go down there was a massive show of sparks from the roof of the stage. There is always a pause before the outro.
1 thing I do remember is the band laughing at Bumble because he wouldnt finish the solo at the end of the song. They waited and waited and tried to finish it but Bumble kept on going. It was pretty funny.

The last happens at every concert and in the original studio version.

What has all this got to do with Slash? If it was a message to someone (and it wasn't) maybe it was to Erin or Stephanie or one of 100s of people. Or maybe, just maybe, it was a message to the rest of the band that the outro was about to start.
