Title: Motley Crue?s "Droppin Like Flies" = Locomotive Riff ?
Post by: RnT on August 15, 2007, 07:23:30 AM
I was listening to the 1994 Crue album and the end of the song "Droppin Like Flies" has the same riff as Locomotive... did anyone hear that too or am I going insane?

It happens... paradise citys heavy riff is based on a sabbath/ozzy song if I remember correctly. Slash even said so himself.

Thats true...also its uncanny how much the riff of Bach's 'Piece of Me' sounds like 'Enter Sandman'

That sounds interesting - you know what song? Any link to the interview?

Supposedly "Zero The Hero" from "Born Again." I personally don't hear the resemblance though.

What's even funnier is that "Piece Of Me" came out a year before "Enter Sandman."  : ok:

"Out Ta Get Me"'s riff is also very similar to Aerosmiths "Rats In The Cellar".  If you check it out, it uses exactly the same chords, except RITC has an extra note thrown in.

and lets not forget Used to Love Her compared to Dead Flowers!!! same shit, same chords!
UTLH goes D,A,G,A
and Dead Flowers go D,A,G,D....

Yeah, basically people steal song structures from other people.  Really, it's no big deal.  Led Zeppelin stole a lot of their great music (dazed and confused, whole lotta love, rock and roll).  As long as its done well, it's cool.  It's easy to steal a song and make it shit.  At least guns steal songs and do them good.

very true. It becomes extremely clear when listening to the Argentina 06/17/93 bootleg where a lot of times I think they're playing UTLH but they're doing Dead Flowers.

Two awesome songs by the way. Even both lyrics are kinda... bizarre

I think its glaringly obvious PC was based on the heavy riff in 'Zero The Hero'. Its just basically that riff sped up!

You have to remember though that there are 1,000s of bands... and 1,000s of songs.. so it really goes without saying that hundreds of songs are going to sound similar!!

Stairway to Heaven was a rip off of Taurus by Spirited.

Listening to Zero The Hero now, and I still don't hear it. It's nowhere close to being the same thing.

The riff is almost EXACTLY the same.......you may not be listening to the right song...

keep in mind, it's just teh guitar riff, the singing etc. is different

i can hear it, definetely.  PC speeds it up a LOT though.  And Zero the Hero is not a well known sabbath song, I don't think.

Yeah, there's a few GnR riffs that they absorbed from other bands, and then some of theirs have been likewise absorbed. It's the way with most great classic rock.

Nikki Sixx isn't very original all the time anyway...

Bach's 'Piece of Me'?

Also gonna mention Lord of the Thighs by Aerosmith.....heard a great live version of it and the big jam at the end is definitely Locomotive.

Listen from 1:07 from Hero The Zero or maybe its more obvious at 1:38.Then listen to Paradise City at 1:20. The tabbing is quite similiar too.

I don't see the connection. If anything it sounds like the piano part from the "I see the storm is getting closer" part of Estranged.

I've always thought Out ta get me sounds like Jumpin' jack flash. When i hear gnr's version, it always sounds like OTGM.

The main riff in Saliva's "Survival of the Sickest" is almost a direct rip-off of Marilyn Manson's "Fight Song".

Oh men..... there are a LOT of songs that are really like others..... to compare Used to love her with any other song is insane.... 1st, 2nd and 3rd in music.... it's like KOHD..... "identical" to Yellow ledbetter from Pearl Jam.... the same chords, different key..... if we start to look for songs similar to other songs, we won't ever finish with that..... the difference is how you play them and how the band feels and puts the signature to the song..... period....

it DOES sound very similar to Madagascar but i think the chords to madagascar are quite widely used anyway

Why is that? Can't handle that your precious GnR might have been influenced by someone else? It's practically the same song. It's also almost identical to 'Ball and Chain' by Social Distortion and has a similar chord pattern to 'I Know You Rider' by the Grateful Dead...

The point? There really is none. It's just a pretty standard rock chord progression. There are plenty of patterns in the genre of rock n' roll that pop up in tons of songs. It happens. It's the melody that makes it unique. Rock bands have taken from each other for ages, why get bent about it?

Yeah I can't understand that either.

I hear tunes all the time that are lifted (intentional or not) from other tunes. No biggie.

Alice Cooper done that a bit to. The Awakening has little riffs from a few songs from Welcome to my nightmare album. Dunno why they do it.

Yeah, and I'm sure that most of the people who went to see Gn'R in 1993, thought the band started to play UTLH when they actually started Dead Flowers.
