Title: How many GN'R songs can you play on your (whatever it is you play)?
Post by: Dead N' Bloated on August 15, 2007, 12:04:48 AM
I'm a drummer and I can play all GN'R songs. The only ones I have a bit of trouble with are GOE, YCBM (intro) and RATB.

What do you and can you play?

 :peace:

Off the top of my head ( now that I actually think about it ) AFD is the only album I can play all the way through , every song on there I can play at any given moment!! I'm sure I could play MOST of UYI , some of slash's work on that is pretty intense!!

there are a few songs i have trouble with, like locomotive. but then again i havent spent time on learning GNR songs in years...

i can play just about most of them though...favorite to play is Nightrain. Least favorite (to play) is...Brownstone. that main riff, i dont know why, i have trouble with it! lol

I play:

a 1999 Gibson Les Paul Classic
a 2006 Gibson Les Paul Studio
various acoustics and acoustic/electrics
cheap Yamaha bass to record with (stays in tune though!!)
Yamaha Keyboard

The only song I've picked up note for note is SCOM.

GOE, ... RATB.

What songs are those?

Garden of Eden and Rhiad and the Bedouins. Now that I have written the names of the songs it defeats the purpose of havine abbreviated them in the first place. LOL.

I have trouble with RATB because I dont know exactly what Brain is hitting. If I had a good quality version of it, it would make it easier.

Damn, I should have gotten GOE, but certainly wouldn't have RATB

I play every new gnr song (Robin's parts, since I play in a new gnr cover band). Had to learn all by myself, tho, so there's a lot to improve.

I have trouble with RATB because I dont know exactly what Brain is hitting. If I had a good quality version of it, it would make it easier.
What do you think about Brain's drums on it? I think it's his best work and sounds amazing! :)

Thats prob the most effort he has put in for a song. I love it tho.

I can play bits and pieces of the older songs, as well as "Better" and "Chinese Democracy". Trying to learn some of the classics and the other new songs here and there when I have a chance.

"Chinese Democracy" is always fun to bash along to on drums, even if it is not exactly how Brain/Frank played it.

I can also play most of the songs that I learned on guitar on bass, they're not too different.

On guitar I could probably play most of them if I took the time to learn them, but I have a strange relationship to GnR.. Its like I admire them to much to mess with their songs at all, I learned all Metallica, Megadeath, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, hell even most of Dream Theatre and Yngwie Malmsteens stuff I laid my hands on one time or another, but the songs are kind of holy to me...   ??? ::)

I know what you're saying, sometimes, learning to play a song ruins the magic for you, and its hard to listen to it the same way again.

True, but most of the time it makes me appreciate it a lot more.

When I learn a song that I used to consider great, and it (after a lot of practise of course) starts getting easy to play, it kind of sinks on my list of "great songs" , its actually kind of unfair of me, but thats just how I feel sometimes. I dont want that to happen with most GnR tunes. Like, when I was 11-12 years old and learned the GnR standards like KOHD, Dont Cry, Paradise City and Its so easy , after a while they turned out the less favourite songs in my head, so I stopped to try learning the rest, and I kept it like that ever after...

True, but most of the time it makes me appreciate it a lot more.

I learned how to play locomotive all the way through, my band is thinking of covering it

its not a very difficult song, except for the many parts, and the main riff that played in the intro and the verses. The straight continous sixteenth notes mess me up sometimes.

I have a bit of trouble with the timing in that song during to chorus. I can do it but it took me ages to get and I still fuck it up from time to time.

I play guitar and have now started to play bass also, and I gotta tell you. I don't play any Gn'R songs as a whole, except like Patience or KOHD with the chords. But playing some solos and riffs.. ummm.. I just start to practise and then I realise it's just waste of my time  Listening to Slash/Izzy/Duff/Robin/Richard playng them makes me sad. Well not really, but anyway.. Every time I try to play Locomotive, I really think I'm raping the song good time!

Yea AFD is by far one of the best jam along albums , I especially love it when I have the volume turned just perfect to where my amp is louder then slash's guitar part but not the whole band. So I get the effect of me playing slash's part with GNR as my backing band.....ooo the drunken paradise city jams lol
