Title: They recorded Appetite 3 times? Is this correct?
Post by: Kangaroo Friend on August 14, 2007, 11:12:58 PM
I remember somebody saying they recorded Appetite 3 times with 3 different producers until they finally got the right sound?  Is this true or was I dreaming?

And if so, where are these other recordings?

Yeah, I think they tried out different guys before settling on Mike Clink.

Thanks for answering.  Strange how these alternate recordings have never surface.  If this should be place in another forum feel free to move it.

I think he meant that there was a guitar for sale on Ebay which used to be owned by a guy from Nazareth, who originally produced AFD.

With the auction was one of the original AFD recordings.   But the auction was for $60k.

But I could be wrong.

They are out there.
On the dozen or so I have off Appetite there is echo on Axl voice as well on most of the band... not all the songs but quite a few.... kinda like slap back echo from the 50's. really quick.
I have like three versions of Jungl, two of Easy, etc.
I remeber getting them the same night I got a bunch of VR Contraband demos where they did some Aerosmith-No More No More. And some GNR and STP....
Demo's aren't always that great though... there not finished and polished up. But they are cool.

why not? what i understand its that one guy was selling a guittar on ebay and like a bonus he offered one of the versions of appetite , it looks like he was one of the producers of one of the versions that didnt get out.

Off topic but a quick guestion.

Of the 30 songs on appetite, how many did Steven drum on? All of them? or did matt step in to finsih the record off?

Matt wasn't around at the time of AFD.

But Steven plays drums on one track on UYI 2 (Civil War). Apparently the drum track had to be edited together from several takes. That might explain why he's only on one track.

i remember seeing the ebay listing, he used the record for the sole purpose of boosting the price. he knew the guitar wouldnt fetch much by itself so he threw the record in too just to use the G N' R name and boost the listing

So all these alternate recording are just the demos that are out there? The slowed down Sweet Child with the fade in intro, the Paradise which goes straight into the power chords part (no intro)? I have three demos of Jungle but as far as I knew there are no demos of It's So Easy?

I don't think they recorded AFD 3 times.  What I believe they've  done was record demos for the album with 3 different producers . What is something normal in the business.  No record company would spent so much money with a startin band .

Well it wasn't recorded 3 times, there're another producers back then, but AFD was recorded just by Mike Clink, as for I know

Paul Stanley from Kiss was a producer at one time.  He kept trying to change Welcome To the Jungle according to Slash or Axl and they said Fuck you, your outta here.  Pretty much Mike Clink was the only guy that would take the job from what I remember.  The hard part was getting them to studio or something.

Yea axl didn't take kindly to paul's idea that WTTJ wasn't "catchy" enough. He said fuck off and later went on to say he was a queer i think hahaha. I think the hard part was getting them in the studio without a hangover lol.
