Wow, this version is more electric (duff's bass) and Matt plays the full kit for the ending.  This is more like the Live Era Version.  It kicks ass!

Only thing that could make this better is Slash busting out the oldschool Electric solo he did back in the day during use your illusion tour.

Scott must have really loved doing another GN'R song.  It's funny how Axl said Slash and Duff didn't want to play these types of songs, but here they are in their own band, playing Patience. Maybe they'll make it a regular.

It still lacks the soul of the original.

The soul a song gets when the singer sings it like he means it.

It was better than OAR's cover of it.  It was better than Johm Mayer's cover of it.  Need I go on?  I am not saying its better than GNR's lies version.. Its not.  Its not better than Live Era.  It is better musically than Current GNR, and give vocals to Axl.  Last time I saw GNR, Fink butchered Patience sooo bad that he didn't do the ending all the way and no Paradise City.

similiar to the band playing a song like they mean it. which is arguably only possible if you actually wrote it.

Have you ever heard/seen Pearl Jam cover Rockin' In The Free World?

How about Jimi Hendrix "All Along The Watch Tower"?

Johnny Cash "Hurt"?

all great covers. i love lots of great covers. but in my opinion, very few IF ANY have the same soul, or feeling, as the originals.

sex type thing is one of the greatest hard rock songs ever made. i'm a much bigger gnr fan than STP fan. but given the chouce i'd rather hear STP play it....it's more real.

I could name literally dozens of covers , studio and live, which are better than the original. That is extremely subjective of course, so if you always prefer the original, I can't really argue with you. Many of Led Zep's songs were covers. I've heard some of the originals, and not been blown away. "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam. Huge hit and a good song, though the lyrics are super cliche. But the original is absolutely fucking awful.

I could go on and on.  But I have never heard anyone do a GNR cover better than the original and it will probably never happen. Maybe with "my world" or something like that.

It was better than OAR's cover of it. It was better than Johm Mayer's cover of it.

I haven't heard those.

/jarmo

Neither have I. Are those live or studio?

Anyway, it's pointless and unfair to compare VR's live performance with GNR's studio recordings... or anyone's live performance with anyone's studio.  VR patience should be compared to live GNR patience. I think this song is extremely reliant on the vocals and Axl's heartfelt lyrics, more than many other songs probably. Scott gives it a good try, and Slash obviously knows how to play it on guitar, but no Axl, no Patience to me. Interesting though, and I'm happy that they played it.

That song is so good

On the subject, I hate it that VR are playing Patience.

a few weeks later after Slash said that. Scott said that, its not true. That they are still going to play them because they are fun to play live. even though slash did say it in an interview

Here ya go wiseguy:

What about how the songs change for you artistically? Not only does Scott have a different voice than Axl, he's a different personality.

What happens is, music is supposed to be simple, especially rock & roll, and either it sounds good or it doesn't. And if it sounds good you do it, and if something doesn't sound right about it you just put it down and move on. There are certain Guns songs that are such standards that you don't want to really go there. But at the same time, there are a couple of songs that we thought about maybe doing, and it just doesn't feel right or it's out of Scott's range or maybe the guitars don't sound like Izzy and my sound. So you just sort of let that go and see what else there is to do. There was a point there where we said we weren't going to do any more G N' R or [Stone Temple Pilots] songs at all just because we almost felt like we were obligated to play them because we did it at the beginning. So people were coming to gigs and [we were] going, "Well, hopefully they're into our record, but at the same time they're also going to get these sort of like retro pieces in there." And after we had two albums' worth of material we got really arrogant and said, "F--- it, we don't have to play that stuff." But then we sort of missed it and we thought, "Well, maybe we'll change it up a little bit and put some fresh blood in it." So that has worked out so far, and we'll see how long that lasts.

Great clip.  8) I'm glad Slash and co. are still playing a few of their old GnR numbers at gigs. Fucking beautiful. To all those who whine about it-its not exactly uncommon for ex-members of bands to play a few of their old songs with a new band. Get over it. They have every right. If the audience love it, that's all that matters.  :hihi:

Izzy's words.

It's a bit harsh to say it has no soul, I think the way he sings it is quite heartfelt.

Interesting to hear Slash play the solo very close to the original studio version don't think he ever done that with GnR or maybe only in the early days.

The audience reactions are a bit over-the-top though.  "This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen", "I can't believe we're witnessing this"

I agree.

Too many people tend to lose sight of the fact that both bands are totally full of shit. A laundry list can be presented of quotes, actions and failed promises of both bands that make them look disingenuous. So to keep sniping at the other is stupid when the band being as the example is as bad as the one being attacked.

There's this guy who's been caught lying and he stole a guitar (which he then returned).

Jarmo, if axl sang, with Velvet Revolver, would that version sound better than if he sang with his current band?

Their are 2 haves to a band....  Each band has one half that is better and one that is worse.

its all subjective.   i personally prefer GnR.  yea musically this version of patience does sound good, but the vocals ruin it for me.

and far as each band having the better half, thats not a fact, but an opinion.

these are mine.

Tommy > Duff, hate to say that cuz I've always liked the King of Beers and its close.  But you put up Tommy's solo albums to what Duff has done solo, Tommy is the clear winner.  They are both legends.

Robin is easily as talented as Slash just not as well known,  and personally I dig his style a little more.   some will, some wont.    ask MANY of the folks who saw GnR during 2006-2007 and they will tell you likewise.

BBF is techincally a better skilled guitar player.  i realize he is not as well liked as slash, but he brings stuff to the band that VR simply does not have.

Frank is a much better rock n roll drummer than Matt.

Richard is cooler than that other guy who makes fart noises with his geetar.

Plus VR doesn't have Dizwald Fucking Reed.  :peace:  or mother goose.   these two guys, and Ron, and even Robin to a point bring shit to the table that is non-existant in VR land.

Axl vs Scott, gee now that one I have to think about.  ::)

I jut dont see your point.  GnR is the better band all around if you ask me.

But tommy doesn't have Duff's knack for background vocals which where I think Duff wins on tommy. All the guitarist in GNR are as good as slash , technically , but slash plays with an amount of emotion that I don't see in them. Maybe when they play CD stuff it will be different but as far as Nightrain , Paradise City , the real emotional slash solo's they seem to just improv or do licks over it without any actual feeling for the song. VR doesn't need Dizzy hahha. Axl OWNS Scott , I won't argue that at all , its almost common sense. Slash runs all over the guitar work from GNR IMO , everything is opinion and we just have to accept it.

No, the version I heard in Osaka (most recent one) beats VR.

It doesn't bother me at all that the solo isn't note for note as it is on the album. The feeling is there and that's the most important thing.

so you are basically saying the new version from osaka is better than the original on lies and that if you took axl's voice and dubbed it over VR's performance, it still sux compared to Osaka?  That is hard to believe.  YouTube linkage please.

when robin has a body of work to compare to slash then you can make those type of comments, slash is the one with the worlds most recognised piece of music. along with riffs and solo's which frequently appear in the best and favourite lists.

i loved robin's playing all 3 times i saw gnr in 06, except when he played patience. he butchers the solo, every time. he has great idea's but they just didn't come off during those shows.

if someone shows me a version of patience he doesn't butcher then i'll take it back, and just put it down to me being unlucky 3 times.

You would never say it was better then VR anyway, so what's the point in giving you a link?

Because some people don't have their mind made up already before listening to something (e.g. "Weiland butchered it")

Oh please, smoking guns had his mind made up about this before he even heard it. In his mind anything VR does is better because it has slash.

@smoking guns -- ha ha ha that was hilarious! "I am very objective"?

Look in the thread just above this one!!  I am going nuts over the Dec. 29th show in Vegas?!?!?!  What don't you get?

However, you were correct, I am a HUGE Slash fan....  But that usually doesn't get in the way of my opinion on a song or music.  I mean, I say often Big Machine is a shitty song, and it has Slash..

so you are basically saying the new version from osaka is better than the original on lies

I wil never understand how you get that from this:

No, the version I heard in Osaka (most recent one) beats VR.

 ::)

and that if you took axl's voice and dubbed it over VR's performance, it still sux compared to Osaka?  That is hard to believe.  YouTube linkage please.

Dubbing Axl's voice over a Guns N' Roses cover by Velvet Revolver doesn't make it Guns N' Roses.  Those guys still aren't in GN'R.

The guys who played in Osaka are.  :hihi:

You know why the GN'R version is better? Because they play it like GN'R in 2007 instead of trying to play it like GN'R in 1988.

It's them being themselves.

How is that "personal shit"? It was something he stated in this thread, and I responded to. It wasn't even the main part of my post it was a secondary comment.  ::)

the singer of GNR in 2007 sings the song like it is 1988, so it would make an interesting combination..

So you are going to sit here and tell Slash , Duff and Matt that , they are not being themselves. Thats ridiculous you dont know what peoples true feelings are. They are being themselves.

If there's one thing about Slash - in the public eye he never "is being himself"... (except when he plays guitar, of course)......

(He does 'come out' on the rarest of occasions though)...

Thats ridiculous you dont know what peoples true feelings are. They are being themselves.

Wait.. wait.. So you do know what peoples' true feelings are?

I didn't think so.

And it's funny, I doubt they're being themselves if they're such 'contemporary' players now.

How are they NOT being themselves?  People really over analyze artist's choices and decisions.

a good high quality clip.... No sure of the show. Says Sturgis South Dakota..? Oh well.? Great clip!

I think they pla y an awesome 2/5th of a gnr cover.. Meaning slash n duff are 2 of 5 so it's a partial cover.. As gnr songs go, scott's voice fits that song very well.. Nice to seel slash n duff playing hat song again..

Maroon 5 Patience

OMG! I must say that that version of Maroon 5 is by far the worse version of Patience ever done. I?m speechless... I mean... he sings the solo! Lol its so bad it even get funny  :hihi:
Now... concerning VR?s version of Patience... just gotta say that musically it sounds quite close to the original one to me. Oh... and I like Matt?s work on these new version too... kinda repetitive lol but he kicks ass at the end when he goes to the drums.   : ok:

That was just to show that this version, when compared to others by more popular bands, is a pretty good cover of a great song.
