Title: Messages - I just don't get it.
Post by: BurningHills on August 08, 2007, 08:13:42 PM
I know that everyone else seems to love this song, but I think that it's incredibly mediocre and I'm glad that it's not on the regular album.

What am I missing in this song that's not allowing me to "get it?"

Well I love Messages. A lot of it has to do with Slash's playing on it for me. Don't know what to say...

But I don't really care for 'The Last Fight' and everyone seems to love that song, so I know how you feel.

Better than most of VR , hell yes , better than GNR , hell no. Some of slash's best work in the song though , if you listened to Guns for Slash's guitar work than this sticks out like a sore thumb. Vintage Wah Pedal sound with licks that only slash can play in his own way.

EDIT: No PM's needed bro's here it is in it's entirety

( Beautiful song )

Its a great guitar driven ballad, with meaningful lyrics and soulfull singing, its a Best of Slash and Scott type of song.

It's not THAT good, but it's good.

I agree definitely.  To me this song isn't a masterpiece, but it's far better than what VR has shown us they're capable of.  I think songs like this and You Got No Right shine above all their medicore filler stuff and show us that deep down if these guys would throw their heads together and get down to business, they could produce an album that would definitely blow anything away.  The talent is there, it's just all of them being able to relay it to the music.  I'd take one or two good songs like Messages and YGNR over a thousand variations of She Builds Quick Machines, Slither, etc.

I haven't seen those images for a long time...they bring back a lot of memories.  I think the song taps into those emotions.

I really enjoyed the song.

The guitar melody is the only thing special in the song. Everything else including the lyrics are just ok IMO

I think it's a decent song, good guitar work but, like all VR songs, extremely repetitive.

But it should have been included in the album...a decent song among mediocre songs will always shine.

Yeah, they should have knocked off Spay.

I must be one of the few who actually likes that song.

I think Spay is good too. [EDIT: at least OK] A punk rock song with attitude. If you replace Spay with Messages, oh my god what a mellow album that would be. You already have The last fight, Can't get it out... and Gravedancer, and with Messages on top of that... well.

I think they could MAYBE have put it in there instead of Gravedancer, which is just a bleak copy of Falling to pieces and one of the album's weakest tracks. But then people would go, "oh, why didn't they include Gravedancer?". You can't just put every soft song in there if you want a balanced album, and if Messages was on the album, no one would have sung its praise. Now at least VR fans embrace the song because of the fact that it's just a bonus track.

The lyrics are great - its a sad song that can interpreted in many ways apart from the obvious. Slash's guitar intro and riff is awesome, its a cool song and something unexpected from VR, which I guess is the main thing - its different. The Last Fight and Gravedancer are ok but they're typical of the safe ballads you would expect - like, we have to have a ballad in the middle which will be a single and one to finish the album, so Slash, come up with any old guitar melodies that'll do. They're not very challenging if you know what I mean. Messages is awesome and so unexpected.

People love it because Slash makes his guitar cry again in a soulful, bluesy song.  It had been a while since he did that on a riff rather than just a solo.  That's the main reason I think GnR fans went crazy over it.  I think it's a good song, better than any of the ballads on Libertad, but not as good as YGNR or Loving The Alien.  I think the lyrics are kind of cliche, they take an event (9/11) and by referencing that tragedy they automatically invoke emotion but they really add no insight into the situation, instead taking the most obvious route possible.  Whereas the lyrics on YGNR and LTA are very personal and in that way more powerful and effective.

I like the song alot - its beautiful to listen to.  And, as it has been said already, one reason so many people have been moved by this song is because of the events that inspired it.

The lyrics and vocal melody hit me in the face real hard, especially the line 'Tell my son i wish i never yelled at him yesterday.'

Very touching. Hit the mark beautifully.
