Title: Ignorance is Bliss
Post by: DevilHatesALoser on August 08, 2007, 01:20:32 AM
Did you ever consider/realize how much easier it is to forcefully dismiss knowledge because there's nothing you can do about it?  I was driving to work the other day and saw a bunch of feathers flying out of the semi.  I thought, no way could that be chickens or something.  Sure as shit when I got up to the truck, I saw that this thing was packed with live chickens, I mean crammed full.  Now I'm no expert, but I have to believe that a cold blooded animal exposed to 60 mph winds in 65 degree weather isn't too happy.  I just got done watching Fast Food Nation and saw for the first time how cattle is slaughtered.  Now I'm not an idiot or naieve enough to have not known how the process worked before, but actually seeing it is a whole new game.

I can rationalize and justify the conditions all I want, but that doesn't change the feeling that I know this is wrong.  My question is, what do you do about it?  Becoming a vegan isn't an option for me.  My lifestyle and taste in food just wouldn't make that possible.  I don't have the time or money to buy special meat that is allowed to roam free.  I know I'll just write off most of this and continue to look the other way.

I don't know exatcly where I'm going with this, but I've realized there's alot of fucked up things going on out there.  I truly feel like my only viable option is to turn a blind eye to it all.

Grab a musket, take a ride on the Oregon Trail and start hunting your own food.

:lmao: i can just about picture that sight

untill that fateful ride to the slaughter house pigs cows chickens ect are the happiest animals on earth. But when that ride comes they're like WHAT THE FUCK for about 2 or 3 hours then they're on a burger or a sandwich.

but think about it, animals on a farm. All they do is eat, sleep, fuck, make noice and shit. Then they role around in that shit. And the chickens lay eggs thats like taking the best shit of your life over and over again.

if you ask me, farm animals got it pretty damn easy

There's alot of discussion on the topic.  Can a creature be unhappy if they don't know what happiness is?  Are chickens capable of being happy?  Sure they can experience pleasure and pain, but to what extent do they consider being crammed together great discomfort?  Cows don't really exist in nature and serve no purpose other than a source of food.  So many of those questions beg their own questions and it's a never ending cycle.

It's not a simple situation and most people (including myself) will just write it off.  But where do you draw the line (for any issue) and say enough is enough?  Ecspecially when your own efforts would amount to nothing more than a spit in the ocean.

Yes, they do.

That's why the water has to be really hot so it all happens quickly.

not really :-\...........

Can a creature be unhappy if they don't know what happiness is? Are chickens capable of being happy?

who cares you eat them and hopefully not alive so what does it matter?

Cows don't really exist in nature and serve no purpose other than a source of food.

yes they exist because anything you can smell, see, or taste is in existence. and they can also serve as a good jacket or baseball glove :)

It's not a simple situation and most people (including myself) will just write it off. But where do you draw the line (for any issue) and say enough is enough?

if you, as you said, "wrote it off" then you wouldn't have started this thread.

and finally i don't think i have a line on subjects like these. Its kinda like if something tastes good i'll eat it, if something is funny i'll laugh, and if i see some one speak out against what i think is funny or tastes good i'll tell them not to watch the TV show that offends them and to not eat the thing that tastes good to me and to just let it go.

:peace:

Do lobsters feel pain when I boil them?

I think the real question is: Do you care if lobsters feel pain when you boil them?

Once you know something, you can't pretend that you don't.? I pretty much feel the same way - I feel bad I eat animals, but if I didn't I really wouldn't eat anything at all.? Also, my freshman year college roommate was a vegan, so I'll always have a negative association with veganism, because she was such a bitch.? But I digress...
what you can do is eat less meat, if you don't want to give it up all together.? You don't have to totally give up something you enjoy to make an impact.

Regarding the lobsters, if you increase the water gradually, you can boil them humanely.? I'm not convinced they don't feel pain, because no matter what any scientist says, you never know.? Maybe they just never discovered what their pain mechanisms are.? But boiling them gradually should take care of that.

As far as ignorance is bliss, sure, it's true, but would you really want to live like that??? Being oblivious to suffering around you just so you didn't have to feel bad or do something about it? I'm not saying "you" personally, I'm saying that to everyone.? And I certainly understand it -- I've said so many times, "I just wish I didn't know about this!" (like when I found out my ex just got married last Saturday!).? But you can't always ignore it and it will go away.? One of my friends has never had an HIV test, and despite my insistence, she won't go.? She said she just wouldn't want to know.? But she would continue to have unprotected sex because in her mind, if she didn't know she wouldn't be responsible.? The point is hardship and suffering will still continue around you, even if you chose to stick your head in the sand.? You could be happy for a while but it wouldn't be real. The goal should be to be happy AND aware.

But... I too have seen the chickens in the crates on the freeway.? It's heart breaking.?
