Title: The Single Best Moment in Rock History
Post by: Krispy Kreme on July 23, 2007, 10:19:07 PM
There are so many...hard to choose.

I am going with Hendrix's rendition of? the Star Spangled? Banner at Woodstock in August 1969. It was perfect, set within the context of the Vietnam War and all the protests? and civil disobedience? at the time--the deliberate? distortion? to characterize a nation that had? lost its way, or chose the wrong path--the clear? cynicism? and sarcasm? with which? it was? delivered,? it? was? the? perfect? song? at? the perfect time. The perfect "fuck you" to Richard Nixon and the direction that the establishment was taking the country at the time.

I wonder, where are the protests today against the Iraq war? In 1969-1970, there were like 500,000 young people marching on DC demanding an end to the war. There was revolution in the air, and people demanded? a change. Today, nothing. This war is equally immoral and more? illegal than was Vietnam, and yet the youth of America? are? silent. Of course, the political institutions and the establishment are stronger today, having had the shit scared out of? them in 1969.

The main rock bands are not tapping into the anger? and rage? that most of America feels? about the war and the Bush administration. GNR won't even play Civil War.

I guess we have? grown lazy and complacent, bought off by our opulence? and easy life. So sad,? so very fucking sad.

I'm glad not every artist force feeds their fans their slant on politics.  When I go to a concert, I want to hear good music and escape from reality for a little while, not be told what my political views should be.

Get back was one of the songs they did on the roof. They also did "dont let me down".  That would be a great moment to witness. Don't know about Shea though. An old interview with John stated that the fans were so loud no one could hear the music.

Yea, that's what made it so Rock & Roll!

It also made the Beatles decide to stop touring and get back into the studio to make more albums...

Oh come now. Rock and (anti-establishment) politics have gone hand in hand for decades. Rock is SUPPOSED to be anti-establishment. Why do you think the FBI kept (and probably keeps) files on rock stars?

I would have loved to be at Woodstock - original. But there are so many, it's hard to choose. or actually remember them all.

The coolest one I have seen and understood and appreciated the magnitude of was Roger Waters playing with Pink Floyd after 25 years and more bitterness than I think even the Guns situation has produced. It was only 4 songs but it seemed to tie up that loose end after all those years.
