Title: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: RoCoKiN on July 17, 2007, 12:50:26 AM Since it is the week of Appetite for Destruction, why don't we all recollect on the very first time we heard it! The 5 W's: Who? (if you were with someone) What? (...er what format did you buy it in Cassette, LP, C.d.) Where? When? (time, a general date, age) Why? (what made you wany to listen to it) etc...
And so here it goes: I was 14 years old and it was in Aug/Sept 87' and I remember sitting in my bedroom on the floor listening to it on theis little piss ass stereo. I loved Jungle from the moment I heard it on the Pepsi Power Hour on Much Music and I knew I had to have it. And honestly, when It's So Easy and Mr. Brownstone played, I thought for sure it was Slash singing  I just imagined that that voice had to come from him....and I didn't realize it was actually Axl until I saw them live in Halifax in May 88' and they opened with ISE and I was like WTF?. Hearing GN'R for the first time was a life changer...I had to have every Hit Parader, Circus and Metal Edge magazine with GN'R in it....I had the band plastered on my walls...crazy shit... Man it's a Great album! I also remember everytime Axl swore I was like "oh, shit" better turn it down before mom hears. :hihi: Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: D on July 17, 2007, 01:47:04 AM Heard SCOM on an old show that came on WTBS called 'Night Tracks'
I fuckin hated it. Heard it the next week, Kinda liked it I remember coming home from the record store with a .45 of SCOM and my brother came home an hour later with a .45 of SCOM I still own SCOM, WTTJ and PC on .45 vinyls. We were poor growing up and didnt buy a whole lot of Full albums. SIngles were real cheap though so Id just buy those. Anyhow, i saved up my money when UYI's were comin out, A friend of my brothers was tellin me about it and how awesome they were gonna be. I bought UYI 2 Fell in love with the band and bought the other Cassettes right after. Appetite was amazing. First time i heard Out ta Get me, I was floored. Rocket Queen for the longest time was always my favorite song on AFD. Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: stolat on July 17, 2007, 02:25:06 AM Age 14 (1980s)

Post by: Rainfox on July 17, 2007, 02:31:58 AM Flipping the TV with no sound on at my Dad's. Sleeping on the sofa. They keep showing a video of this band at a huge venue. Obviosly they're not the headliner but they're OWNING that gig. Everything is chaos. Immediate. There's a surge. They look, feel, are genuine. I turn up the TV.. and it's Paradise City. I'm floored. Get back home and hurry down to the old record store in town. Called Skiven ("the disc"). Us rock n rollers, intellectuals, punks, beatniks and everyone inbeteween shopped there and NOT at the mall with the suburdan crowd. Nah. I knew the owner and came there frequently. "There's something... you GOT to hear," she said. She pulled out the last copy from in the back, under G. Original Williams cover (this was 1988). "Funny you should mention it... , what's it about?" "Well," she continued, "it's about the RETURN of rock n' roll as we know it and these guys won't last long so hear them NOW!". Bought it, went home.. from the first moment Jungle hit... I was flying. Been flying ever since. :peace: Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: MYWIFEMYLIFE on July 17, 2007, 02:54:28 AM i saw wttj on mtv early 88 and was like whoa whadda fuck is that! it was among with other clips of bon jovi,cr?e,poison, whitesnake and some lame hair bands shit that i cant recall their names and looked like totally out of this world.
at the time i was a maiden and heavy metal fan but this one video made me forget about them, after a couple o'weeks i found and bought afd cassette and the first tune i listened to was iso cuz the shop played this a zillion time and i forgot to rewind, i didn't mind and kept listening, i was shocked with all songs bcuz it was like nothing i heard b'fo. i ran to my friends' house and make him listen to it and we both became obsessed with gnr that day. i went back home and wrote gnr big to my two white tshirts with marker pen. btw i became very popular at school to discover this band cuz boyz were more into poison and bon jovi, girlz into boy bands adn cheesy pop bandz, but in a short time being a gunner became very popular and i was like the firestarter :) Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: pollyblue on July 17, 2007, 05:40:28 AM i first saw and heard 'paradise city' in 1989 on mtv. it blew me away. the intro with the high voice, the drum roll, the attitude, the clothing, ... it just had everything i never even heard off but loved from the first minute i saw it! the white jacket that axl wore with the gn'r circel-logo on it, slash with his top hat, i couldn't get enough of it. i went to the record store and bought the single on vinyl, copied it to a cassette so many times after each other until one side of the cassette was filled with PC! rewinded it and turned it so many times whole day long! i was in love with the intro. not very long after that, i bought AFD on cassette and went nuts! so did my parents haha because i listened to it every day, every time. and now 20 years later, i still blast that record (on cd now ;)) out of my stereo every once in a while.

Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: faldor on July 17, 2007, 07:28:27 AM I remember my older sister like Guns N' Roses when I was about 8 or so, she was 15. It wasn't cool to like anything your older sister did, so I decided I hated Guns N' Roses. That didn't last long, since they soon became my favorite band. I remember listening to AFD in my parents car, again probably 10 years old or so. I was with my friend and I was worried that after Jungle, It's So Easy was coming on and that didn't have the most appropriate language for a 10 year old to listen. I think I told my parents to fast forward through that song.
Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: CocaineTongue22 on July 17, 2007, 07:55:24 AM I remember the opening strains of Welcome To The jungle on headbangers ball when i was 12. Changed my life. 20 years later, I got to see Axl perform for the first time. I think I may have owned 5 different copies of that album in LP, casette, cd and mp3 formats. I played the tape out so much I broke the fucking thing. I thik every song was my favorite at some time or another, but Rocket Queen remains my favorite because of the ending. That record is perfect. Every song. Every note. Every lyric. To think, five rats off the strip managed to survive their circumstances and eachother long enough to produce one of the most memorable recordings of all time. Thanks, guys. I taught my four year old girl to sing Sweet Child O' Mine. Her favorite part is "Where do we go?" Think I'll wait to play her the rest of the album, uh....another 30 years or so.
Peace. Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: willow on July 17, 2007, 08:45:33 AM I think it was Mtv. But our local rock station played them too. All I know was, I was blown away. Still am!!! I have to admit I wasn't a huge fan at first. I didn't want too love this band. I thought they all were going to end up dead the way they were going. And with good reason (I thought that) But when talk started about the Ill's. I just couldn't take it anymore and fell deep into it!! I would have to say what totally did me in was the Article Axl first did for the cover of Rolling Stone!!! That article brought out shit I had been hiding inside for years. After reading it, I couldn't hold it anymore. Like a lot of gnr fans I could relate to some of the shit Axl was going threw. And it always helps to here it from someone else.
Sorry I kinda changed the subject on this one... peace out amyl Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! And based off the NR video I just thought they were really cool. Fast forward to Christmas of 93'. I'm 9 years old and my aunt gives me a gift card to the wiz. I went there and decided to pick up Appetite simply cause it had the most songs I recognised hearing before. It was the first album I had ever bought. I listened to it non-stop on my sisters cd player for days. I just couldn't remember ever having been so into something before. And the funny thing is I've had the same copy for almost 15 years and it plays perfectly. Does not skip or anything. Compare that to some cd's I ended up buying 3-4 times.

I knew WTTJ, SCOM and PC of course but Mr. B, Nightrain and Michelle soon became favourites. Now it's all classic. Rocket Queen is now #1 for me. Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! It was just the most amazing thing i'd heard, was into Maiden at the time and this was so much more "REAL". It was dirty, sleazy, nasty rock. Even though at that age, I didn't understand what the songs were really about, I knew the album, and by extension, the band, were something really special. Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! So I heard Jungle for like the first time consciously and Im like, that is the fucking coolest sounding guitar I've ever heard! I saw pictures of slash and he was in like some comedy central cartoon so I was joking with my friend like how slash from guns n' roses has done everything there is to do and talking about how fucking cool he was. Fast forward to late 2002. My friend really liked guns and I had my ipod for the first couple days and all i had were the standards off of appetite (SCOM,Jungle,PC) so I though I should download a bunch of songs so i got about half of appetite. What: CD Where: At my aunts. :P When: Ummm, this had to have been around March 2005. I was 16 then, and I had no idea shit like this existed. :hihi: Why: Well, our closer Eric Gagne used Jungle as his entrance music, and I loved the fact that when Jungle came on, you knew that the game was over. And in January 2005, I saw Grand Theft Auto commercials and they used Jungle. So later that night, I decided to obtain a downloading service and to get Jungle. I listened to it the rest of the night. A couple of weeks later, I was going through my cousin's album collection, looking for GN'R. I found Appetite and listened to Jungle, but I stopped right after! I was too afraid to go all the way! And I wasn't much of an experimenter. A couple of weeks later, I was staying over again. In goes AFD. For some odd reason, I forgot to press repeat after Jungle, and It's So Easy came on. I decided to give it a chance. At the 1:35 mark into the song, I knew there was no looking back and that my life would completely change from after that point on. Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: RageNirvanaNIN on July 17, 2007, 04:52:41 PM I was 13 years old. Let me give an idea of my musical situation. I had been listening to Backstreet Boys , NYSYNC , and random crap pop or rap acts. But all of a sudden I found an interest for what I thought was "rock" I had got Good Charlotte and Simple Plan cd's I thought i was cool. My uncles one day heard me listening to a simple plan cd , and where like ??? hell no that won't fly. They burned me about 70 cd's of what they said was "real" music stuff like Pearl Jam , Alice In Chains , Nirvana , Rage Against The Machine , but the problem was I didn't have a cd player to listen to. So I went to the store to get some a cd player , and the clerk was like you can get a free cd with the purchase , so i'm looking around didn't know what to get and my mom goes, Look get this THIS is music. I was like sure screw it why not , I got AFD. On the ride back home I listened to it but thought nothing special of it , considering all I heard was WTTJ and I'd heard that before. I went through a giant Nirvana phase , and one night I put the cd on and really listened to everything , and I was completely mind blown and the whole thing. Of course since I began playing guitar in the "Nirvana" phase this was godly to me to hear Slash play was pure awesomness. I also remember looking up the best solo's of all time and SCOM was in there , and I was always puzzled because I thought the solo's where the little "mini" solos in between the chorus and verse. When I heard that solo for the first time I knew I wanted to be a guitarist and I had found my guitar hero!! To make things even more interesting later that year this kid at school , little asian nerd kinda dude , was like hey I found these cd's in my attic you might like them....Those cd's my friends, Use Your Illiusions I and II. :peace:
At the 1:35 mark into the song, I knew there was no looking back and that my life would completely change from after that point on. SO WHY DONT JUSS F' OFF! Ahh YES I remember hearing that and thinking , these are the guys that embody me. They dont take smack , they do their own thing. Thats it time to listen to AFD , GNR is really a band that always inspires me to keep going as a musician!!  Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! What? - Compact Disc When? - Summer 2006 Where? - In my friends bedroom, listening to music and generally chilling. Why? - My friend had tried to introduce me to Gnr about a year earlier, but using Greatest Hits. This hadn't really caught my attention much, as (in retrospect) it's a pretty poor playlist really. But this time, he made me listen past WTTJ (quite a boring song imho) and we then got to It's So Easy. This was much more like it, and with the amazing fury, anger and also the confidence. Nightrain, Out Ta Get Me, Mr Brownstone. What can I say, I was a hooked man. Have been ever since. Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! I would stay up late and watch Headbangers Ball, and I believe that was the first time I heard WTTJ. I taped Liva at the Ritz on my vcr, and thats how I learned all the songs. Thats how I would listen to Appetite. It was monthes before I got the tape. I think I had a buddy dub it for me. Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: Dead N' Bloated on July 17, 2007, 07:49:46 PM I had heard a few songs from it like WTTJ, SCOM, Nightrain, PC, ect in late 1992 . My mum's friend went to Bali in early 1993 and brought me home a present, Appetite For Destruction (about a week before GN'R played here).
I listened to it by myself on tape as soon as she gave it to me. Every morning before I went to school I would listen to it. I could normally get to PC before I had to go so for like a month after I got AFD I thought the Mailman would be at my joint coz I could hear the Whistle in PC but I thought it was coming from outside. LOL. I felt so stupid when I finally realised it was in the song. Post by: Chief on July 18, 2007, 12:53:24 AM let's see... 11 or 12 years ago.. i had already heard UYI I and some other random stuff, i think Lies too... anyway, i wasn't fully into them yet and i bought AFD in some used record store around here. i still have that copy and it grew and grew on me after that. I didn't like some songs at first, of AFD and the other albums but eventually i got into most of them and from then on, the myth and legend grew and here we are....
its hard to believe its been 20 years since appetite came out! Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: SLCPUNK on July 18, 2007, 01:33:38 AM Me and my buds
Tape Car we were in 88-when MTV played music all day! I had never heard anything like WTTJ before and wanted to hear more from the band. Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: lynn1961 on July 18, 2007, 02:10:33 AM Who - by myself
What - vinyl album - still have it Where - my room (living back with my parents, again) When - Summer of 88; I was 26 yrs old Why- Heard SCOM on the radio and thought this band was the greatest thing I'd ever heard - was going to be up there with the Stones & Zeppelin; THEN I saw the video and was done, bought & sold! The tophat, the leather, the cool T-shirts, the bandanas, the tattoos, the long hair. That was IT! Biggest, bad-ass, band I'd ever seen! Bought the album, the very next day, and loved every second of it, from the start! Still love it! AFD is, hands down, for me, the best R&R album ever made. Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: LunsJail on July 18, 2007, 03:38:31 PM It was September 88 and I was 9 years old. I got my parents to buy me the tape at the mall. My mom gave the cover a good hard look (this was in the PMRC days and everyone was paranoid about this "devil rock" the kids were listening to) but she let me get it anyways. I told them to play it in the car on the way home. First song, WTTJ, no problem. Then It's So Easy comes on and it's just a barrage of F-bombs towards the end. Most people wouldn't even flinch today but in '88 at 9 years old that was a pretty shocking thing. I'm thinking "oh shit" my parents are going to take this tape away from me. But they were totally oblivious. Probably the only thing from that age that I still listen to.

Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: King Axl on July 18, 2007, 07:10:54 PM Bought the 'Appetite For Destruction' cassette at the mall on October 10, 1987 after seeing the "Welcome To The Jungle" video on MTV. After listening to it once, I knew this band was going to be something special. I was 16, and was the first person I can remember in my school who got into GN'R early on. I recall sitting in study hall with my Walkman listening to it, and one of my classmates asked me what I was listening to, I told him Guns N' Roses. He was like, "Who are they?"
Pretty soon though, more people in my school discovered GN'R, especially after the video for "Sweet Child O' Mine" premiered. That song really catapulted sales of 'Appetite', and by the time I had returned to school for senior year in September '88, the album had hit #1 and the "SCOM" single had hit #1 as well. That cassette wore out a long time ago, but the memories remain. Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! I first started growing my hair then came the tight black jeans and Gunners shirts, then the ear pierceings, then the cigarette smoking Then finally the Guns N Fucking Roses Tattoo's. It is fair to say this Album and Band changed my life forever. I grew out of the hair and tight jean thing a fair while back now, but that dosn't stop me from still cranking Appetite out of my $8000 stereo in my work van at least once a week. I love this band with a passion and I get so jealous reading about the people who met Axl on the Australian tour, because all I wanted when I was a teenager was to grow up and be Axl Rose. Oh and I forgot to mention, my bedroom walls and ceiling was covered 100% with magazine pictures of my Idols ( GNR FOREVER) :peace: :smoking:  Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! And honestly, when It's So Easy and Mr. Brownstone played, I thought for sure it was Slash singing?? I just imagined that that voice had to come from him....and I didn't realize it was actually Axl until I saw them live in Halifax in May 88' and they opened with ISE and I was like WTF??.? Hearing GN'R for the first time was a life changer...I had to have every Hit Parader, Circus and Metal Edge magazine with GN'R in it....I had the band plastered on my walls...crazy shit...? Man it's a Great album!? I also remember everytime Axl swore I was like "oh, shit" better turn it down before mom hears.? :hihi: haha, ya me too!!! same thing, but i saw jungle on a vhs that my older bro taped....i disocovered the magic of music after i heard appettite... Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: Sober_times on July 19, 2007, 02:23:14 PM I was 10 years old it was 1991 or so. I heard a song from my sisters stereo as I was walking by and loved it. I don't know what it was but it just hit me. She turned off the stereo mid song and left with friends so I went into her room, and took out the tape and read guns n roses. I rewinded the song that was playing and played it again and listened to it from start to finish and loved it. As I got older I loved GNR even more.
The song that got me hooked? Rocket Queen. Still my favorite GNR song to this day. :smoking: Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Post by: Im-Fn-Crazy-MAN! on July 19, 2007, 03:09:50 PM What format?
CD format. When? I can't remember the very first time. However, the first time I properly listened to AFD was in 2000. I was 16. When I was even younger (6-7 yrs old maybe?) - I had many cousins that were into GN'R. Therefore, I heard AFD many times just by hanging' out with them. Who was I with? I guess I was alone (back in 2000). Where? Not sure. Probably in my bedroom. Why? I heard that Robin Finck was playing in a new version of the band. Robin was a hero for me; an idol. I bought my first guitar after watching shitty recordings of NIN @ Woodstock '94. Title: Re: Appetite: The First Time! Not only did I think that it was Slash singing, but the song's grittiness and realism made me feel uncomfortable and dirty.
