Title: Pool Drain Pulls Small Intestine Out Of Young Girl
Post by: GeraldFord on July 05, 2007, 09:10:56 AM
(WCCO) Minneapolis A six-year-old Edina, Minn. girl has been hospitalized after a horrific accident at a swimming pool.

Abigail Taylor was severely injured Friday when she sat over an open drain hole in a wading pool at the Minneapolis Golf Club.

Now Abigail's father has a warning to other families: Pool and hot tub drain accidents are a hidden danger that many of us don't understand.

Abigail has big brown eyes, a dazzling smile and at just six years old she has already competed in local swim meets.

"She loves to swim," said her father Scott Taylor.

Her love of swimming is why her family didn't think twice when she played at a kiddie pool similar at the family's golf club on Friday night.

Scott said as Abigail was getting out of the pool, she fell.

"She more or less blacked out, she passed out, fell face-first onto the pool decking," he said. The family thought it was a seizure.

An ambulance rushed her to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. Several hours later a surgeon said Abigail was lucky to be alive.

"The suction had caused a two inch tear in her rectum and had basically disemboweled her by pulling out her small intestines, almost all of it," said her father, Scott.

Her father said a search of the pool filter turned up Abigail's intestine. He said Abigail was seriously wounded because the cover of the drain had been removed.

In most public pools the drain cover is screwed in and can not be pulled off. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, the pressure on some pool drains can be as strong as 300 pounds per square inch.

"It never even crosses anybody's mind that potental at the bottom of that pool is enough force to literally disembowel a child, an adult," said Scott.

Abigail will have to be fed intravenously for the rest of her life and will have to have a colostomy bag.

"We view it as a miracle that she's still with us," her father said.

She is improving, Wednesday morning she stunned her family by asking this question:

"She said 'Am I going to be on the news?' She said, 'Why do you ask?' She said 'Because I want to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else,'" recalled Scott.

Since 1990, 170 people mostly children have been caught in drains and 27 of them have died. Legislation is pending that would require pools and hot tubs to have multiple drains to ease the suction.

Some pools have a safety vacuum cutoff which shuts down if someone is trapped. New drain covers which cost less than fifty dollars can also help.

According to the Associated Press, an official at the golf club expressed sympathy for the family and said he didn't think anything was wrong with the pool, but referred questions to the club's attorney, who declined to comment.

The guy who wrote Fight Club, Chuck Palahnyhuiihihkknok (something like that) has as character in one of his stories who had something similar to him happen.  in the story his intestines are being sucked out and the only way to stop from drowning is to bite off a portion of his own intestine so he can swim to get air.  as a result of his lack of intestines he is perpetually super skinny.

That actually sounds interesting, as I'm not much a fan of his work.

Sorry to make the first off color joke, but I'm sure after having her small intestine pulled out thru it... One of her "Brown Eyes" is bigger than the rest....

^This coming from the guy who defended Jerry Falwell.

So jokes about a dead self-righteous, hateful bigot are off limits, but 6-year old girls are fair game, huh?

she's not dead...

And I was making a joke, not a serious statement that the world is better off without Abigail Taylor (who again, didn't just die)

Of course, excuse the oversight, what was I thinking? ?Feel free to continue to ridicule an innocent kid, she's merely disabled for life. ?

So what's the point of a "joke" if not to be funny?  If you weren't trying to be funny, then it's just a cruel and obnoxious statement with no point whatsoever, other than to be cruel and obnoxious.

On the topic of the story itself, it's really scary.   I had no idea something like that was even possible.  My little girl is a great swimmer, and I wouldn't worry about her in a wading pool.  Now I guess I get to add pool filters to my list of worries.

there are other stories of peoples hair getting caught in these things and they drown.  people have actually drowned in hot tubs the same way.  freak accidents.

I haven,t continued to ridicule an innocent kid... I made one stupid comment, then felt the need to compare my poor attempt at humor to the comments directed at someone who had just died...
Did I make a bad joke about her situation yes... did I make derogatory comments about her life... No...
Little different than "I hope Jerry Falwell Burns in Hell"

jesus christ, if you don't think his joke was funny then don't laugh at it and think the guy is an asshole.  if you thought it was inappropriate then just think the guy is an asshole.  debating whether or not it was funny or appropriate is just soooo lame.  i doubt hes going to apologize or anything.  personally, it made me smile but in a "ooh man thats wrong, but still funny"

The moment I read "big brown eyes" in the article, it crossed through my mind.  I mean, seriously, what kind of dumbfuck journalist would put that in this of all stories.  It's just asking for a tasteless joke.

Poor kid, good thing she surrived.

Yes, most find the jokes distastefull, I did too and at this stage I'm sure the girl and her parents are in shock-
-having said that, many people do get some self-irony after some time when similar things happen. It's better to be able to joke about it as accepting it as a part of life then having it all so holy and tabu.

I use to say to an overweight friend of mine, "you have no necK" and it's fine, it's not as serious but life's go on for most after an trauma :peace:

I have no problem with making a stupid and/or tasteless joke.? My only problem with it was the claim that it wasn't meant to be funny.? And that's obviously not true.?

You sort of have to pick one, either it's a tasteless joke and you were trying to be funny, or you are an insensitive asshole who just wanted to say something shocking about a little girl's tragedy.? I don't care either way.

I didn't say I didn't mean for it to be funny, but after reading it... It wasn't as funny as I thought..

I thought that c0ma's joke was funny. Then again, I am just a tasteless asshole.

But the writer that wrote this should've known better then to put "brown eye" into this when her intestine got sucked outta her ass.
