"We are Velvet Revolver and we still play mother-f***ing rock 'n' roll," frontman Scott Weiland yelled from the stage at the band's album release show last week for 'Libertad,' at L.A.'s famed Whiskey a Go Go. Though posters on the Whiskey door listed the gig as a "suprise show," word was all over town by the time fans jammed the intimate club, and a few who couldn't get in watched a live feed of the show -- sans audio -- on a giant screen set up atop the Sunset Strip landmark. Taking the stage around 10:15, the quintet opened with the new 'Let It Roll,' one of several 'Libertad' tracks, tacking on 'Last Fight,' 'She Mine' and 'Get Out the Door.' Slash took center stage for several solos and blasted through a sing-along version of the ballad 'Fall to Pieces,' Stone Temple Pilots' 'Vaseline' and Guns N' Roses' 'It's So Easy.' Further expanding their rock repertoire, Velvet Revolver launched into an aggressive cover of the Talking Heads' 'Psycho Killer.' Weiland was especially talkative during the set, letting fans know how much he enjoyed playing intimate gigs such as this. "It's always f***ing awesome playing in Hollywood in front of a little sweaty club," he said. "It makes you remember what it's about at the beginning." Why doesn't the band hang out in the midwest or, i don't know, maybe Texas? (tongue in cheek is hanging out because I can't say it with a straight face). :P
