Why? Has everyone surged forward? Is someone being crushed? or does he mean "step back" like back off?

Ha ha, sounds like a wild night.

Native New Zealanders are big, mean looking dudes for the most part. I wouldn't be comfortable with thousands of them screaming for me.  :hihi:

They have the monopoly on the Australian bouncer industry.

Glad they are so into it, hopefully it will all equal another Asia-Pacific Tour before to long.

That's fn cool.

I once saw Bach sing that on an American game show about 10 or so years ago, it was kick ass.

I'm glad Dizzy busted out with it. I'm a fan of "Angie" and all but  I'd love a bootleg of this instead.

Gig review: Guns N' Roses in Auckland
Stuff.co.nz | Saturday, 30 June 2007

Could Axl Rose and the new-look Guns N' Roses silence their critics during the first show of their New Zealand tour? Reviewer Chris Schulz was at Vector Arena to find out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guns N' Roses
Where: Vector Arena, Auckland
When: Friday, June 29
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been 16 years since Guns N' Roses released an album of new studio material, and 14 years since they visited New Zealand.

Axl Rose has certainly trained his fans in the art of patience.

And they had to wait just a little longer to see their hero at the first night of the band's three-date New Zealand tour.

Following an hour or so of old-school hair metal from former Skid Row front man Sebastian Bach, a beaming Axl arrived on stage at 11.30pm - just 30 minutes after the "official" start time.

How punctual of him.

Axl and his new band proceeded to tear into a crowd-pleasing run of classic Gunners hits, including Welcome to the Jungle, It's So Easy, Mr Brownstone, Live and Let Die and Sweet Child O' Mine.

If they played them like they had a point to prove, that's because they did.

Can Axl still rock a crowd? Can the new-look band compete with the original Gunners line-up? And did they have any new songs worth hearing?

Those questions were all answered by tonight's performance.

Yes, Axl is still a charismatic rock front man that can keep a crowd entertained. But his voice was unreliable and couldn't back up his energetic stage antics.

Less impressive was his use of three - yes, three - teleprompters. Dude, don't you know your own songs by now?

Meanwhile, the new band was missing the pinpoint accuracy of Slash's guitar solos, even if replacement Robert Finck can match him in the big hair stakes.

But they can rock out when they need to, and provided particularly lively versions of Live and Let Die and You Could Be Mine. The massive stage setup, including synchronised lighting, pyrotechnics and fireworks, helped divert attention from any shortcomings the band had.

The set was heavy on tracks from Appetite For Destruction, but two of the four new tracks played tonight - Better and IRS - sounded bloody good. Shame about the bemused reception they received.

It was, of course, those classic singalong hits that got the biggest crowd reaction, and Axl didn't disappoint during two key moments.

The first was when he put on his dinner jacket, sat down at the piano and played a thrilling version of November Rain while fireworks rained from the ceiling. The word "epic" was invented for times like this.

The second was during the show's encore - a thunderous Paradise City complete with more of those booming fireworks and cannons showering the crowd in red confetti.

Yep, it was more of a celebration of the past rather than an attempt to craft any kind of future for Guns N' Roses.

But it's still a hell of a lot more fun having Axl around, and it was a reminder of just how good those songs are.

No wonder Axl hasn't released Chinese Democracy yet - if it bombs it could tarnish his reputation. Why would he want to risk that?

what a setlist... look at the last 9 songs: a slow ballad (NR), 2 rockers, a slow ballad (patience), 2 rockers, another slow (Maddy), another two rockers (http://www.sv-portal.com/forums/images/smilies/headbang.gif)

This has to be the best setlist of 2007. Nice Boys (? ), Chinese Democracy (? ), Madagascar (? )

Thanks everyone for the updates, specially tynia and jarmo?

This is the setlist the so called "whiners" have been asking for fool! Why they didn't play Chinese Democray during the Australia Tour of the same title will never make sense to me. Now I feel slightly annoyed. Man I hope they release a DVD of this show. Surely they must have a live DVD in the works. The band is looking and playing better than ever!

Sounds like a great concert-the Crowded House piece by Dizzy must have been nice-Jarmo, did he play the whole song? Crowded house had some great songs. I hope GNR plays the states this fall.

Musically, the Gunners are clearly lacking the melodic talent of their former virtuoso guitarist.

First time i ever heard Slash is a virtuoso.
Thanks for the link. People really loved the show. : ok:

While the premise is clearly flawed, the conclusion is valid.

Virtuosity defined
In Music in the Western World by Piero Weiss and Richard Taruskin we find the following definition of virtuoso:[1]

"...a virtuoso was, originally, a highly accomplished musician, but by the nineteenth century the term had become restricted to performers, both vocal and instrumental, whose technical accomplishments were so pronounced as to dazzle the public."
The defining element of virtuosity is the performance ability of the musician in question, who is capable of displaying feats of skill well above the average performer. Musicians focused on virtuosity are commonly criticized for overlooking substance and emotion in favor of raw technical prowess. Despite the mechanical aspects of virtuosity, many virtuosi successfully avoid such labels, focusing simultaneously on other musical aspects while writing and performing music.

No, Slash isn't a virtuoso. A fan boy will not make him a virtuoso, so quit that. Ron is. Buckethead is. Slash is not.

But from that description Axl could be called a virtuoso. He can sing better than 90% of most front men today. Slash is an amzing guitarist, but he's not a virtuoso, he never claimed to be, never will.

Former SKID ROW frontman Sebastian Bach has issued the following update:

"Having a blast in Auckland, New Zealand! First night we got here, turns out the band HELLYEAH is in town! We all went to the show and they tore the fucking house down!! It was great catching up with my old buds Vinnie Paul, Kat, Sterling, and meet the rest of the band, the incredible singer Chad Gray, Greg, Maxwell and Bobzilla!"

I'm just curious what your definition of average is , to me , it is an objective term used in statistics to define the mode , median or mean . Primarily the mean .

Thanks, as always, to the updaters.? ?: ok:

Cracking setlist - I'd have loved to have been at that show.? Also, great to read the glowing reviews from fans who were there; it looks as though the band have not only met expectations, but in a substantial number of cases have far exceeded them, and that can only be a positive force for band cohesion and morale.? Onwards and upwards...

Yes, the band were amazingly tight. They literally left 'us' (the Adelaide audience) gobsmacked. I don't know after which song it was, but it ended, we were all like "wow, did we just see that!!!!" and then we errupted into thunderous cheers.

That my friends, is bloody good music!

Frank Ferrer speeds up the song a lot, great drumming, great backing vocals, and Axl is just on fire

Virtuoso=one who excels in the technique of an art esp. in musical performance.

Now, can you think of any other guitar man up to the time of GN'R who played a kick arse sole whilst standing on top of a grand piano?? No. Well kudos to Slash excelling in the technuique and delivery, the art, of a guitar performance. A lesser virtuoso would not have the balls to deliver such a performance whilst standing on a grand. As a music teacher who has studied the virtuosic performer alot? of the skills needed came from sheer arrogance....

Now, lets get back to what this thread is about.... ::)
