Title: Appetite For Destruction - 20th Anniversary Thread!!
Post by: Neemo on June 08, 2007, 10:42:57 AM
Post some AFD facts to celebrate! (well known or obscure doesnt matter) or if you don't want to post facts just tell us your fav song from it or something

AFD has been kicking our ass for 20 years! :o holy crap! may fav tune on the album is SCOM

I'll go first with the facts too, YCBM was originally going to appear on AFD but unfortunately it was unfinished by the time the album was due so they left it off to finish up later, instead they put "with your bitch slap rappin' and your cocaine tongue you get nothin' done" in the liner notes.

well i bought the Classic Rock Mag to read about the 20th aniversary of Appetite and i dint no that Axl wanted to November Rain and Dont Cry on Appetite and i also didnt no that they had wrote Perfect Crime in the early days of that album aswell.
also Slash says his fav appetite song is Paradise City (cant argue with that) and his least fav was Think About You followed by Anything Goes.

great to see it selling more and more copies even after 20 years ROCK ON GNR!

well. i disagree with Slash, Think abou You is my favourite track of AFD!  : ok:

well-known fact : the cross in the cover wasnt the original album cover, which was a robot raping a young woman  :peace:, and it was banned

well-known fact :  Slash hated SCOM back then...he thought it was a joke - and it really was ,he came up with the riff as a joke... Axl liked it and took it and made it the song we all love  :peace:

the synth in the intro to paradise city was a surprise for band members until they heard in the finished recording....axl didnt told them about the adding of synth. : ok:

'Slash started playing that kinda circus music and I said: Dude, do that one again. Then Axl came with the lyrics. We didn't know by the time that it was going to be such a huge hit.'

This was said by Steven Adler regarding SCOM. Great song.

I'm not certain what my favorite song is, but there's a good chance it's Rocket Queen or Nightrain.  RQ has such a killer groove to it, and Nightrain was always my favorite as a kid.

Slash103, I would have to agree with Slash. My least favorite AFD songs are Think About You and Anything Goes-always skip both. I really wish Geffen would do a special remastered, reissue of AFD now with the original cover artwork and bonus songs/outtakes/alternate mixes from the sessions. At least do a remaster with the original artwork. That painting is dead ass perfect for the album cover.

Izzy does just two solos on AFD.  The solo from Think About You, and the first half of the first solo of Nightrain.  Otherwise, it's pretty much slash the whole way.

"Bad Obsession" was written about a year before "brownstone." they wanted to get out the harder stuff first, so thats why "bad obsession" and "don't cry" were not on appetite...

Rocket Queen is definitely my fav. It has a great ending and finishes the album perfectly.

Fun fact: if you mix up the first letter of every song, they can be used to spell out such phrases as:

WON MY ARMPITS
MOWN MY RAPIST
PAINTS MY WORM
WIMPY MAN ROTS
and
STRIP MY WOMAN ;D

I'll attempt an answer to this:

Don't Cry
November Rain
Back Off Bitch
and
You Could Be Mine

were all contenders for Appetite at one time to my knowledge.

For the record, Appetite For Descruction is the greatest Rock Album of all time because it capture an energy and mood better than any true Hard Rock record. It is a very cool energy that is infectious and never grows old. From the bongos in Mr. Brownstone to the chick getting fu**ed in Rocket Queen, the sounds, the percussion, the wails, the backup wails, the voice and the base combine for a music that fits the message and the mood.

I can only wish that somehow that album could be re-released or that MTV would play some of their videos again, because there will always been an audience for that record, even when all the Rock N' Roll bands today fade away.

Songs like Mr Brownstone and My Michelle and Rocket Queen - at first I didn't care much for them, but after watching GNR and Axl performing them on stage in the Live Era 1987-1993 on DVD and hearing them on the album, they are incredible in their own rights. My favorite song is Paradise City because it is the most inspiring GNR song ever written.

The coolest thing about AFD for me is that the album really spanned 6 years - from when the first song was written (1984 - "Anything Goes") to the end of the Appetite for Destruction tour in 1989. The album seems the capture the band from start to finish when they had hit it big with Its So Easy, which is probably the last song and one of the coolest to make it on the record,

N very nostalgic if it see 'em, now  :(

Congratulation!!!!

Don't Cry
Perfect Crime
Bad Obsession
Back Off Bitch
November Rain
Knockin' On Heaven's Door (they had been playing versions of this from 1986)
You Could Be Mine

I believe Yesterdays and the Garden (the two songs written with James and Arkeen and McCloud)were written around time of AFD, not sure why. For one thing Yesterdays was played live by the drunk fux just six months after AFD's release. The acoustic demos of these songs which exist also sounds like it could be from AFD era - the demos from UYI are slightly more polished. Not 100 % sure though.
Also, according to gnrsource.com, The seed for the song "Pretty Tied Up", came one afternoon when Izzy was about 19 (1981).

If "Anything Goes" and "Think About You" were scrapped for later- and "Don't Cry" and "You Could Be Mine" were added- it would have been perfect.

Not 100% sure of these, but I know I read them at some point:

Hyatt On Sunset
8401 Sunset Blvd

Also named "The Riot House," the Hyatt on Sunset is legendary for many reason. Led Zeppelin used to ride their motorcycles up and down the hallways and rent entire floors for massive parties. In 1986, Axl Rose tossed sizzling steaks to fans below. Later, the fire department showed up to halt his balcony barbecue.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tower Records
8801 Sunset Boulevard

This is the famous Tower Records on Sunset! What makes it so famous? Who knows? It's just like any other Tower with overpriced CDs. However, Axl Rose worked here as a night manager in the early 80's!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rumbo Recorders
20215 Saticoy
Canoga Park

This is where a majority of Guns N' Roses "Appetite For Destruction" was recorded and demoed. When you drive past today, there is a security gate and razor wire.

the reason appetite is so great, is because its raw and captures the sound of a "live" rock band. its like a live cd without being one. Most bands, Kiss, aerosmith etc. havent been able to capture their "live energy" in a studio album form.

But appetite is a live energy. You can almost imagine being in a club listening to them play this in the cathouse or something. with axls hair teased out, women flashing the band adn Booze everywhere. you can almsot sence being in a rehearsal room with lyrics written on a pizza, slash drunk out of his mind. cockroaches all over the walls.

its not overthought, yet its not underthought. its just good ole RNR

My first intro to AFD was at the tender age of 14 when I could hear it being blared from my brother's bedroom. I tapped on his door and asked: "who's that bro!?" From that day on he made it his duty to draw my attention to GnR sightings at music awards cermonies and film clips on tv.......

He has now gone into teaching American politics so it is also quite funny to remember the day he made me sit in front of the telly to watch the film clip to civil war. He was real serious about it.......Good one bro!!

Actually, it took approximately six months to reach the U.S. Top 20 (February 1988). I know this because I was working for a department store at the time, and their record department always displayed the top 20 albums. It did not hit #1 until August of 1988, shortly before "Sweet Child O' Mine" hit #1 on the U.S. singles chart.

This is how the story goes with the "Welcome To The Jungle" video:

At the time the video for "WTTJ" was released, MTV was trying to drastically cut back on its' airplay of all the hair metal bands. So initially, it put "WTTJ" on light rotation, during the overnight hours when hardly anyone was watching. As a result, sales of 'Appetite' were soft, so executives at Geffen contacted MTV, begging them to play the video at a time when more people were tuning in. MTV gave in, and one morning at 5 AM, played the "Welcome To The Jungle" video. Reportedly, so many calls were made to MTV immediately after the video aired, the circuit board in their phone system was fried. That is when MTV put the video into moderate, then heavy rotation.  Though not officially released as a single until the following year, the video for "WTTJ" became an MTV staple for more than six months in late '87/ early '88.

Yeah, but there are parts of every state that are "the sticks."  Either way, Lafayette isn't really...not a great town, but between it and West Lafayette, it's not much shy of 100 K people.

Of course, the real insult is that Indiana is the sticks, and Kentucky somehow is not.  :hihi:

But I do agree that Indiana strip clubs suck, since they're only partial nude clubs.  BOO!

Yes this is truly one of the best albums of all time. It was the perfect album for 1987 too. I wish they would re-record the album or release something to celebrate it. We all know they won't though.

I would definitely love to hear the one the new guys recorded.

The following quotes were taken from "The Band that Time Forgot" by Paul Stenning. Enjoy  : ok:

Regarding Sweet Child O?Mine Axl once said: "I had written this poem, reached a dead end with it and put it on a shelf. Then Slash and Izzy got working together on songs and I came in, Izzy hit a rhytm, and all of a sudden this poem popped into my head. It just all came together. A lot of rock bands are too fucking wimpy to have any sentiment or any emotion in any of their stuff unless they?re in pain. It?s the first positive love song I?ve ever written, but I never had anyone to write anything that positive about, I guess."

Regarding Paradise City Axl once said: "The verses are more about being in the Jungle. The chorus is like being back in the Midwest or somewhere. It reminds me of when I was a little kid and just looked up at the blue sky and went `Wow, what is all this? Its so big out there.?Everything was more innocent. There are parts of the song that have more of a down home feel and when I started putting down the over-layers of my vocals (I put five tracks on there), it seemed that it came out like some Irish or Scottish heritage."

Axl on the album: "I want this to be the biggest selling debut album from a rock act ever!"
"The whole album is about someone we?ve known and hung out with or something we?ve done."

Axl on Rocket Queen: "I wrote this song for this girl who was gonna have a band and she was gonna call it Rocket Queen. She kinda kept me alive for a while. The last part of the song is my message to this person, or anybody else who can get something out of it. It?s like there?s hope and a friendship note at the end of the song. For that song there is also something I tried to work out with various people- a recorded sex act. It was somewhat spontaneous but premiditated; something I wanted to put on the record... It was a sexual song and it was a wild night in the studio."

... on Welcome to the Jungle: "I wrote the words in Seattle. It?s a big city, but at the same time, its a small city compared to LA and the things you?re gonna learn... I just wrote how LA looked to me. If someone comes to town and they want to find something, they can find whatever they want."

... on Out Ta Get Me: "Like every time you turn around, someone is trying to screw you over financially, or the cops are banging on your door and you didn?t do anything. It?s just being railroaded into something and trying to get out from underneath it. You know, parents, teachers, preachers... everybody. The last verse Slash and I put together as a joke ?cause we were talking about how we get in fights sometimes, and how some people get pissed off that you?re drunk. But they?re the ones that bought the bottle of whiskey to get your drunk on. Some people say I got a chip on my shoulder."

... on My Michelle: "I know this girl named Michelle and she became a really good friend of the band?s and I was going out with her for a while".
"It?s a true story. Slash and some other members of the band said that?s kinda too heavy to say about poor, sweet Michelle; she?ll freak out. I?d written the nice sweet song about her, and then I looked at it and tought, `that really doesn?t touch any basis of reality?, so I put down an honest thing. It describes her life. This girl leads such a crazy life with doing drugs, or whatever shes?s doing at the time, you don?t know if she?s gonna be there the next day. Every time I see Michelle I?m really relieved and glad. I showed her the lyrics after about three weeks of debating, and she was so happy that someone didn?t paint just a pretty picture. She loves it. It was a real song about her."

Well that?s it... my hands hurt now but I think it?s worth it... this was kinda my humble homage to one my favourite albums of all time  ;)

Not a post with a fact about the Album, but about the Anniversary. July, 21st, this year, is the date of the Osaka show, in Japan.

Man, I wish I'd be there...

Does anyone think Axl or the record company will do anything special to celebrate the 20th Anniversary? I mean could we see them do the whole album from start to finish or maybe a one-off reunion of the original  band members on MTV or something big like that.

Well, not AFD, but we do have a released version of the re-recorded live songs. [Hint - Live Era]

They could. Some say they should. They won't.

Slash said in classic rock that the record company seemed to be just letting it slip by.  So, i wouldn't get hopes up.

There could be a suprise, but I think that if nothing has been announced by 31st July, then nothing will happen about this.
