Title: School Teacher 'Corrupts' Youth
Post by: stolat on June 08, 2007, 05:07:06 AM
At the moment my distance education students are writing radio plays featuring early Rock N Roll music. However, one of my 'special kids' can't get into old Rock N Roll (too slow!), so I have allowed him to use modern music.

We got talking about the Guns N Roses concert and he is now very keen to include at least 5 GnR songs in his radio play. We have decided on KOHD, SCOM, PC, WTTJ and he said that I can pick the last song.

Any suggestions? He is only 12 and GnR is all new to him. Any other advice that I can pass on to this budding young DJ? He would appreciate your comments...

Hey! Hey! In Tuesday's lessons we will be practicing the radio show so I get to play GnR songs!!  Can't think of any better way to get in the mood before the concert on Wednesday!!

I'd suggest Better and Chinese Democracy, but since it's early Rock N Roll, maybe Dead Horse, Bad Apples, Civil War or Yesterdays?

Of course we are talking any GnR song that has been released. By modern music I mean anything that isn't 1950s Rock N Roll.

Is there any comment that he can add when introducing the songs?

Keep it mainstream, LALD will add to the well known other songs, and the listeners will have heard it (even just as a McCartney version) They also represent good radio songs, good luck with this venture

Thanks! I'm glad i could sneak them somewhere in my lessons! After all GnR were they were 'the most controversial band of the last decade'.

I also so glad that I have been able to engage this student in a lesson using GnR. He used to just speak in monosyllables - now he wants to do a radio show every week!

A games teacher at our school corrupted a youth a one point. He got put away for fucking a 13 year old. also, GnR are ace!

Yes, I thought the title would grab people's attention. The Greek philosopher, Socrates was imprisoned for 'inciting' the youth. He tried to stir their minds!
Teachers get such a bad rap these days...

Um, I don't think I want to push him that far...although that attitude will help him get back to highschool instead of distance mode.....don't worry, I have been teaching my students all about teenage rebellion and rock n roll music...

Sympathy for the Devil has alot of history references, but yes Patience is good for this student (can get frustrated)!!

And yes, HellHole, some radio sations definately are corrupting the youth!

Get in the Ring.......(ok, I know this joke's getting old)

But seriously,  Patience would be good to go along with the tunes you've already got.

One In A Million could be good really. It's all about looking past the obvious message of a song and search deeper for what it really means.

In this case, it's about a man's personal experiences in life, not about hating black people and homosexuals. I think...  ???

You better wait the CD to come out before you play de new songs. It's for GN'R

If not, Chinese Democracy :hihi:

Yesterdays
One in a Million
You Could be Mine

I picked these three because of their lyrics. Each one has very different subject matter, but they're all written very well.

By the way, you sound like a really cool teacher. : ok:

Don't Damn Me would be a creative choice also, just find an edited version. Explain it to them as a tale of the trials and tribulations of a rockstar. Damned from the press.

Superb use of a position of authority!

With all the nutjob parents who worry about teachers passing on "political views," they'll never see this coming! :headbanger:

..don't worry, I have been teaching my students all about teenage rebellion and rock n roll music...

I managed to get teenage rebellion in, by teaching a unit on Science -- Matter -- Fibres --  Fabrics -- Denim -- History of Jeans -- 1950s  -- RockNRoll Music!

See how that works!

Well, I played WTTJ to my distance eduction student over the phone today - and he seemed a little scared. But then he gave me a bit of attitude not long after, so I guessed it worked. He thought that "Knocking on Heaven's Door" was very uplifting but it went on too long. He knocked Axl's voice which meant that he thought that it was pretty good!

I think some I'll play him some Patience next and November Rain.

Just between you and me....I am dying to play him.....Ain't It Fun.....

What grade are you teaching?  Because I just can't see a grade school child responding well to "Ain't it fun when you tell her she's just a cunt."

Year 7, so there's no way I can play it......though a kid that age would like how gutsy the song is.......nevermind.........I am giving him a his very own CD as an end of term present though - his mum can decide!

BTW I always thought the line was, ......."when you tell her she's just a cum...."!!

You were referring to the "..when you know that you're gonna die young" part, weren't you? (and if you were I wonder why no-one else caught it.)

Anyway.. Sweet Child and Paradise City are musts. Start him out with the softer stuff (read: poppier.) That'll help him more than the complicated stuff (like Coma, or to some degree like NR.)

Yeh, there are a few lyrics that I'd rather leave until he is well into his teens!

I played him Patience and November Rain the other day. Because he gets easliy frustrated, this song had a calming effect on him. He absolutely loved November Rain - and from a teaching point of view, I got him to concentrate for the full 8 minutes or so!!

Well, sadly it's my last lesson with this great kid this week. I thought I'd play him some music before I send him off into the big wide world.....  :'(

So, my question is this -

If you were a teacher what song would you play to your students as a way of saying see ya! good luck! all the best! have a great life! etc.

Life is going to be a bit hard on him......but he has such a great spark......

Suggestions for inspiring songs?? Any music.....

I can't remember the bands name but they played the song the last episode of Seinfeld - "It's something unpredictable that in the end is right, I hope you had the time of your life."

Or
I think it's the Jayhawks - Symphony of Life - it's a bitter sweet symphoney that's life - try to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die.

Or
If you want to go back to the 50's for a final song - To Sir With Love (corny but popular then, plus we sang it to a teacher, I know it's reeking of cheese)
Or
Modest Mouse - Float On - talks about all the crap that happens every day and how sometimes nothing happens and everything is alright

I ended up playing:

What About Me (Moving Pictures), We Are The Champions (Queen), Ego is not a dirty word (Skyhooks), Don't Cry and Paradise City (after which he said, "I can play the CD on my computer through my sub!").

I also wanted to play Better (The Screaming Jets), Dream Police (Cheap Trick), Turn Up your Radio (The Masters Apprentices), Guitar Band (Stevie Wright), My Generation (The Who) and Imagine (John Lennon).

I also had my last lesson with two of my female students, sending them off with Abba's Dancing Queen!
