Title: Knockin' on Heavens Door
Post by: JeffK on June 05, 2007, 10:59:04 PM
Do you like the version on Use Your Illusion or the current version?

The first time I heard the current version was at a concert and I wasn't even aware that they had changed it, and I thought it was terrible. BUT once I listened to it a couple of times I started to love it and now I think it's WAY better than the Illusions version...which is still a great song. I love how mello and bluesy they made it and Axl sings it perfectly!

What do you think?

I actually enjoy a live version of this song more than the Use Your Illusion II version.

I also think that this song will stay in the setlist once they start replacing old songs with new ones once the cd comes out, because they've redone it and made it their own. So it's kinda a new song.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see it end up on Chinese Democracy. I think that would be a nice touch.

I love the new version. The middle section when Axl goes back & forth with the audience, then does the big wail is awesome.

I gotta say I like every version pre 93 a thousand times better than the current version.
I used to be one of my favorite songs in the set and it is now my absolute least favorite song they do.

My favorite version can be identified by 4 magical words.... "GIVE ME SOME REGGAE!!"

i didn't notice to much of a diff in the 06 version... i didn't like the the 02 version though.. i don't remember if it was the whole tour or just the 01 01 01 show.... but it sounded much more like the original.. and nothing like what GnR has made it.  i think the 06 version is much better than that one.. and pretty close to the illusion era

I love the 2006 version, the 2002 version wasn't bad either.  I'd take both over the UYI era version any day.

I like the newest version. I wasn't big on it when they were doing it in 02 but I like how it's evolved on this tour. It's like a mix between the Clapton version and UYI2 version to me.

Prefer the old one, but that's  only because I've seen Dylan play it like this and I like variety.  :hihi:

The best version is at the Ritz.
Steven's drumming suited the song so much more than Matt's and Brain's and Frank's.

I did like the Rock In Rio III version though. Buckethead's solo was great

I would rather listen to it on Illusion II.  I think they should drop this and live and let die off the setlist to make room for other full songs.  but that is just my opinion

i prefer the 90's version...
i think one of the most powerfull version was in Freddie Mercury Tribute...

but i like Argentina '93 too... a little bit unplugged  ;)

Bring back the old version... at least the crowd knows how to sing to that one... the new one is all over the place.

I agree, but I don't think there's even a chance of this happening until the new album comes out.

the UYI version, absolutly, it was more fun, the chorus was excellent, for Tracey n Roberta, amazing singers, the chemistry, the look, the image, I mean everything.

Even the Ritz version, was also good, 'cause it was very Appetite : ok:.

N when Axl asks some reggea again, never it's gonna be the same

By far the best version the old band had to offer was the one from the Freddy Mercury Tribute Concert, which is the same version that is on Live Era! As for the new band Boston 2002 is probably one of my all time favourites, Buckethead's solo makes the song, its absolutly outstanding, especially at the end and it really pains me when this current lineup plays it! Bumblefoot tries to emulate Buckets parts but it never happens! Hopefully things will be different this time round

I don't think he does.  I thought Bucket's sounded clinical and dry.  Whereas Bumble seems to actually know how to play a slow solo. :P

Has anyone noticed  at the 6.24.06 show (which I was listening  to today), it  starts off in the new mode, then sort of morphs into the old mode, and  turns out to be a weird combination of the old  and new versions.
But through it all, it worked.

I like both. I think the  old version fit  that time period  for  the band, and the new version fits this time period  for this band.

I am a fan of the way it was done in "Illusions" until last year I heard the new version for the first time at Rio, the part I did miss was when he would say "and we've got Tracey and Roberta here to help you", then I saw them again in Vegas and again in my hometown of Everett, after hearing it live at those 3 shows I definately opened up to the new, mind u I am 42 years old and definately grew up with old "Guns" the love and respect that I have for Axl has allowed me to be nothing but open minded to the new band and to all the changes that come with it, I guess in my eyes, I am along for whatever ride it is they are gonna take us all on, and there isn't anything they do musically that I would ever dislike, their talents are endless.......

Buckethead's solo in 2002 was pretty nice, and I really like BBF's solo lately so I'm going with present day version.

Axl Did that On the old version as well. I prefer the version from the Illusions tours. Best ever-6-6-92. Slash plays an incredible solo thats like 5 minutes long. During it the rest of the band switches the tempo  around a bunch of times and it sounds great. 2 reggae breakdowns and Axl getting the crowd to sing along=Awesome.

One of my favourite parts is the 2006? (I think...3 shows in a row) New York version especially the 3:30 to 3:40 section... where he holds the whoooo...whooo...yeh...hey..yeh...ya

i think most people will agree with me after they watch this that this is the best scream from Axl in all of 06 and it is up their with the best of 91-93.

Axl does something amazing in KOHD in Budapest '06.  I can't put it into words, but it hit me hard when I heard it.  It's as if he can sound like he's crying as he's singing...very cool.  He did something similar in the last verse of Madagascar same concert.  8)
