Title: in axl's opinion
Post by: novemberparadise23 on May 30, 2007, 11:17:28 PM
in axl's opinion what song do you think he is more proud of november rain or estranged

He said before releasing the illusion albums that he would quit the music business if he didnt get the song just right

axl refered to estranged as being his baby on the records during concerts on the tour

Probably NR. They still play it live. It was Slash who got thanked for Estranged in the UYI II liner notes.

he was thanked for his "soulful playing". which basically translates to "thaank you for not quitting because you don't like ballads." Axl wrote NR and Estranged on his own, in their entirety(even the guitar parts). besides, it was normally izzy who wrote slash's stuff anyway.

yea he still plays novemberrain because it was one of their biggest hits but that doesnt necessarily mean he cherishes it more than estranged

I would say November Rain.  That was the first song he ever started working on, really.  So I'd assume he'd be most proud of that since it has withstood the test of time and stands on its own even today.

Way to go spreading misinformation. The note after the lyrics in the book says "Thanks for the killer guitar riffs, Slash." Axl did not write the guitar parts. In the Making Fucking Videos thing for Estranged, Slash talks about how important it was for him to be given writing credits on the song because he worked so hard and was so proud of the guitar part he wrote.

axl wrote the piano and lyrics. but nobody other than slash could have written the guitar parts.

There is a real Slavic feel to the last guitar solo.

November rain was all Axl according to Del James and others and that he had been working on it for years.  It was like 20 minutes long at first.  He thanked Slash for his imput and rendition of something Axl wrote....I could be wrong??  Axl did say that Estranged was his baby though.

Not to start old crap but Axl did say after Slash left, that Slash just came played what was there and left without any of the responsibility of running a band and producing good music.  He was also always drunk at the time so wtf?

You're talking bullshit mate. Estranged is an Axl song yes, but to even convey the idea that Slash didn't write the guitar parts on it is stupidity. Also Izzy did not write all of Slash's guitar parts. GnR was a dual guitar band-Izzy played rythm in the main, and Slash played lead. They would occasionally trade off solos on songs-that is what makes a dual guitar band... Izzy did not write the 'Sweet Child' guitar lick, or the 'WTTJ' riff (I could go on..) so your arguement pretty much falls flat on its face right there.

Besides, slash doesn't play with soul. he said it himself.

if you dont believe me check out the UYI dvd's, he sais it in an interview.

Pretty ridiculous statement. Axl's all about the "vocal" melodies, not the guitar. There's many interviews on this site, you could check out even, where they each state that a song would start either with a Slash riff being brought to Axl for melody and arrangement or an Axl piano piece being brought to Slash to try to accompany it with some sweet guitar playing - that is why they made such amazing stuff , in my opinion, because they basically dumped the stuff that either of them could'nt really produce their best on.

I will say this though, if you listen to the November Rain demo, where it's only Axl playing the piano, the part where Slash's classic solo would normally come in, Axl's piano melody is very, very similar to what ended up being Slash's solo.

I would say Estranged, because it is more positive and about surviving. It embodies  hope.

NR is about the nature of the problem, but without a solution. Estranged  is about making through, this time, without you, with a hope for  a better situation next time.
