Title: Best and Worst GNR Opening Acts
Post by: KeVoRkIaN on May 18, 2007, 07:43:53 PM
I am interested in your favs and least favs in this category.

I am only wanting to hear about acts when GNR were big....so Bob and his band 1986 at a coffee house can't count.

This is a time passer and hopefully it wasn't discussed before.

Best opener:

Faith No More - Getting this band at the apex of their career - writing better shit than the Beatles ever did in my opinion...FNM should have been headlining their own shows at this point to humongous audiences.

Worst opener:

The Brian May Band:

I was counting the minutes till the end.  Bored to death in the set.

No disrespect to Brian May's other accomplishments.

Best opener was without a doubt Soundgarden.

Saw the Smashing Pumpkins in April 1992 before ANYONE knew who they were, needless to say, they were terrible then.

It's not even up for debate.  Soundgarden was by far the best opening act GNR has ever had.  The worst opening act must be that Eagle shit band Axl threw off the tour after 1 show last year.

Faith no More Sucks.  A lot.  Of Dick.  and they like it.

But anyway, Sebastion Bach Ruled.  I hesitate to say he was better than GnR, but that was in Baltimore and it wasnt a good crowd.  So if i were Axl, i wouldnt have wanted to be there either.  I was embarrassed (is that spelled right?) to be part of that crowd.

The worst was Bullet for my valentine.  They sucked, but not as much as Faith no More in general.

I gotta think about this:

Saw the following bands open/play with them:

Skid Row (circa 1991 opening at Alpine Valley) - Kicked all forms of ass
Faith No More/Metallica - sorry to the above poster  Fath No More sucked always have sucked and always will suck.  Fuck Mike Patton
Body Count/Metallica  - Beat the ever loving hell out of the Faith No More/Metallica/GNR triple header
Brian May Band - Love Queen, respect Brian May, hated the Brian May Band
CKY/Mix Master Mike - CKY grew on me after the third show I saw them open, Mix Master Mike not so much
Bullet For My Valentine - Worst band I have ever seen in my 20+ years of attending concerts.  No talent there at all  Shakerleg was more talented the night he played
Suicide Girls/Sebastian/Helmet/some unknown band from St. Louis - stick to Baz and the Suicide girls please.  Helmet has their place and it's not at a GNR show.

In summary, Skid Row in their prime was a great act, Metallica good too.

Faith no More Sucks.  A lot.  Of Dick.  and they like it.

Foolish.

I'm confounded by the fact that someone can like the new GNR, which has featured very experimental artists such as Buckethead and BBF, yet thinks FNM sucks.

Then again, it took me a while to get into FNM.  I never thought The Real Thing was all that great, but Angel Dust blew me away.

I like Faith No More, but all they did was complain about everything GNR did, stood for-I'm sure they had no problem cashing the checks from the stadium shows-that makes them the worst to me

The best opening band were the Brian May band and Skid Row and the worse was Eagles of Doom Metal.

As much as I love FNM when I saw them a Giants Stadium they were there just to kill time. They came out w/ no intro and actually told people to sit down they have a long night ahead of them..
Prior to that tour Axl had stated in interviews that the 1 band he was jelous of was FNM. After that tour Mike Patton dissed GN'R saying there good but not that good, referring to their entourage.
Soundgarden were excellant but I recall the MSG crowd being unresponsive.
Skid Row in 1991 and Sebastian Bach probably got the best responses I've seen for a GN'R opener.
Mettalica were co-headliners.
Bullet for My Valentine actually grew on me after the 2nd Hammerstein show I saw them at.
CKY/MMMike never did.
Although I wasn't at any festivals or Eurpean shows I checked out Towers of London and ended up buying and likeing the album. Not sure if you can count bands at festivals as opening acts though..

Best Opening act: Skid Row (Metallica wasn't really and "opening" act) Other goods: Blind Melon, Faith No More, Sebastian Bach

Worst Opening act: in Argentina a band called "Los Guarros" (I can't explain how they really sucks!) Other bads: Mix Master Mike, Hoobastank, CKY...

Mix Master Mike does not translate well in arenas. There is an echo, so you can't her the cut's and mixes clearly or see his hands while he's scratching. But if you ever get the chance to see him do a headlining turntable exhibition at a club, don't miss it, you will be blown away (even if you are not a DJ/hiphop/beasties fan). Theres a reason he's the most famous DJ of all time.

Angel Dust remains an excellent album, in my opinion.  Unfortuantely, during the Illusions tour, I only hear FNM from the parking lot...they finished up by the time I got inside.

That said, Skid Row was the best opening act I personally saw w/ GnR.   I'd have to say MixMaster Mike and Bullet for My Valentine were the poorest choices...

best:

Baz
Faith No More - i feel that they are one of the greatest bands ever, its a shame that they are very underated by a majority of people.
Modern Day Zero - i thought these guys were really impressive, although i find it funny that when i went to see VR in 2004 they opened for them, and then i go and see GNR last year and they opened for them.

Worse:

Pigions of Shit metal.

I never got to see them live, but I kind of like what I've heard from Bullet For My Valentine on the radio. ?I don't know why everyone seemed to hate having them open for GNR so much.

Title: Re: Best and Worst GNR Opening Acts
Post by: Danny on May 19, 2007, 11:41:05 PM
Well, I'm only going to judge the opening bands I've personall seen. ?Otherwise, it would be really close between NIN and Oasis for best.

Otherwise, here are my opinions on who I have seen open for GNR in chronological:

Soundgarden: I had just bought Badmotorfinger a couple of weeks prior...was expecting a better performance.
Faith No More: Was a fan...and I saw their last show on the tour. ?Kicked ass and probably was my favorite.
Brian May Band: Boring, except when they did Queen songs. ?Started strong with Tie Your Mother Down, all downhill from there.
CKY: Should be called CKWhy.
Mix Master Mike: Alot of people hated MMM...not me. ?I found it pretty entertaining.
???: No idea who the first band was when I saw GNR last year...but I liked them. ?The lead singer had a heater while singing, which was pretty cool.
Suicide Girls: I dont give a shit what anyone says, their show was sweet and was a great way to get the crowd going.
Sebastian Bach: Thought it would be cheesy and dumb...and I was right. ?Although, it was cheesy and dumb in a fun, entertaining way.
Helmet: BIG dissappointment. ?Loved Helmet back in the day and had seen them live on their own in clubs...just dull as openers.

Wow I feel really old as I have seen GNR as an opening act, haha.  But they were the best opener I have ever seen! :hihi:

For me the worst was FNM, they were just crap at the show I was at and everyone seemed to think so as things were getting thrown at them left and right.

The best for me was Baz, back in the Skid Row days and with the last tour.  He is quite the crowd pleaser, IMO, even when he is being cheesy as hell.

I have a video of this show. I thought Oasis were awsome, they did pretty much the same set as on Familliar to Millions and were good...like I said it was video - maybe the being there was different. Just before closing with Rock n'Roll Star Liam said "This one is for Mr.Rose!" If you are an Oasis fan shit like that doesn't happen everyday.

People seriously need to get a clue about the Eagles of Death Metal.  What Axl did was screwed up, he even apologized about it.  You can all worship him, but I was at the Cleveland show and they did exactly what one could expect them to do...play their music.  They tried to get the crowd involved and the ignorant assholes threw bottles at them.  Its fine for GNR to walk off the stage when their mic's arent perfect, but EODM playing 5 minutes too short because theyre being pelted for playing their music is shitty?  If you werent at the Cleveland show you probably shouldnt talk about them.  They also cant be sooo awful if Axl said that shit and then called them up to apologize and ask them back.  Heres a hint for Axl: DO SOME RESEARCH.  Dont ask a band to come if youve never heard them.  How can you blame a band who was asked by GNR to open, wrote about how excited they were, and then played their songs relatively flawlessly.  Axl threw them under the bus for no reason.  People here dont like mike patton for saying that GNR was too excessive in 91?  Are you kidding me, of course GNR was too excessive then.

Also Mike Patton is a genius and an amazing talent.  Someone on page 1 accused FNM of being greedy?  Mike Patton could be so much more popular and make so much more money if he wanted.  Instead he does what he wants.  He is a workaholic who actually gets things done.  He is inventive, he is broad with his tastes and does/says what he wants.   Instead of doing music intended for wide audiences he does things like Mr. Bungle or Tomahawk or recording an Italian cd.  He definitely isnt in it for the money.  If youve never heard tomahawk or seen Mike Patton live then you shouldnt comment because he is amazing.  Seriously, look at Patton and Axl, which one looks more marketable...if you say Axl youre nuts.

Educate yourselves to this reality: Mike Patton has released about 25 cd's in the last 15 years Axl has released 0.  Mike Patton's songs push the edges of the music industry and are creative, the new GNR songs are good, but seriously, 1/2 sound like linken park, the other half sound like UYI left overs.  Mike Patton has a better voice than Axl and Mike Patton doesnt have gay ass white redheaded dreadlocks.  I love GNR, but people really shouldnt talk about them like they are flawless gods, they arent.  Axl screwed up with EODM and just because Mike Patton was a little bit disillusioned by GNR's excesses and lack of cohesiveness in the early 90's, doesnt mean that he isnt a great muscian.

I was about to consider your argument however I became offended at your 'gay ass white redheaded dreadlocks" comparison. Now I can't take you seriously.

Shame, because I do like the two latest EODM songs - however they wouldn't be appreciated by many of the females in the audience.
