BW&BK EXCLUSIVE: VELVET REVOLVER Bassist Duff McKagan - "It's Not Like The Five Guys In GUNS N' ROSES Have Sat Down And Talked About A Reunion"
Posted on Monday, May 14, 2007 at 12:27:07 EST

BW&BK spoke EXCLUSIVELY to VELVET REVOLVER bassist Duff McKagan (ex-GUNS N' ROSES) and drummer Matt Sorum (ex-Guns N' Roses, THE CULT) yesterday in Toronto while they were in town on one of their North American teaser club tour dates in support of their forthcoming album, Libertad, which will be released on July 3rd.

BW&BK asked if delivering a second Velvet Revolver album has silenced the ongoing Guns N' Roses, Stone Temple Pilots reunion rumors?

"I don't know if we are really out there enough to hear the rumors," McKagan admits. "We're kind of insulated from a lot of stuff. It's only when we do interviews and people ask that it comes up. It's always the first time I hear about it. I think promoters are behind that a lot, starting rumors. It definitely doesn't come from us. It's not like the five guys in GN'R have sat down and talked about a reunion. Not even close. I dunno ... life is going to evolve. There is nothing we can do to stop what's going to happen. I've finally figured that out. Whatever is going to happen is gonna happen. Right now, Velvet Revolver is what feels amazing."

"Being here in the present is a good thing," Sorum adds. It's like we are here and we're doing this shit now. Damn, you could really fuck yourself up thinking about the future too much. I had no idea Velvet Revolver would be a band. There was a time after I left The Cult, I was like 'ok?' This was after I was in Guns N' Roses, then I went back to The Cult. Then that fizzled and then I was like - 'do I have another rock n' roll band in me? I'm unemployed but I want to play some rock n' roll.' When this thing came together, we had never spoke about it. It just happened. And that's just how life works."

As previously reported, Velvet Revolver will release an EP titled Harmony and the Tyranny a month before Libertad.
The EP will contain two tracks from Libertad, as well as the TALKING HEADS cover 'Psycho Killer' and a video documentary about the making of Libertad.

Libertad will be released in two formats: a CD version, which will also include the documentary and a CD/DVD version, which will feature a bonus DVD with a 30-minute documentary about the 2007 South American tour.

The final tracklisting for the CD is: 'Let It Roll', 'She Mine', 'Get Out The Door', 'She Builds Quick Machines', 'The Last Fight', 'American Man', 'Mary Mary', 'Just Sixteen', 'Can?t Get It Out Of My Head' (ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA cover), 'For A Brother', 'Spay', 'Gravedancer', "Making Of Libertad" documentary (multimedia section).

Watch for more from BW&BK's chat with Velvet Revolver at BraveWords.com and in an upcoming major feature in BW&BK Magazine.

It's not like the five guys in GN'R have sat down and talked about a reunion.

Doesn't he mean the five guys that were in GN'R?

Adz dont start that again.

Duff,Slash,Izzy,Steven etc are still and will always be Guns N Roses regardless of how many different formations of the band Axl has.

Here is Slash in a recent interview regarding comments on GNR....

But he won?t talk about his former colleague, Guns N? Roses frontman Axl Rose.

Faster than you can say "take me down to the paradise city," Slash will firmly dismiss any questions about Rose and their past, current or future relationship.  "Sorry, but every time I talk about Guns N? Roses it comes back to bite me on the ass," he said from a tour stop in Chicago. "It was a band that I was in. I?m very proud of it. But let?s move on, thanks."

Gee slash sure does change his mind a lot regarding a reunion. It was only a few weeks ago he said he would be up for it.  ::)

Because it came back to him.

Not a smart move to talk about your former band's "reunion" when your current band is trying to promote their new album...

I can't believe some of the people on here. Slash makes comments regarding Axl  and you jump on his back, Slash doesn't comment on Axl and you STILL jump on his back. I guess the guy just can't win eh?

Exactly - both bands are great! : ok:

Does anyone else find it a bit ironic though that ex-members are often asked and allowed to talk about GN'R, while current GN'R members are not? You have to be able to see some kind of humour in that! :hihi:

but this is good that he is avoiding the GnR questions now.

Question is : for how long ?

The same guy said they'd drop GN'R and STP songs from the set, and now changed (again) his mind. Hard to keep up with him.

Eh? But they are dropping GnR songs from the setlist as they said they would:

Quote
Fans thinking they were going to hear some Guns N' Roses staples like Mr. Brownstone or Paradise City were sadly disappointed. After touring South America earlier this year, the group has decided to put most of those to rest. The lone exception was Used To Love Her which caused some crowd surfing.

Thanks. Just seen that now.  : ok: Still if it was just a rumour as it states on the VR blog, then Slash never claimed that they would stop playing the songs, hence he didn't change his mind.  :hihi:

Well SlashRock old son, look what section you're in. It's the section of a forum where people are encouraged to bash the musicians who wrote the songs they still listen too and love which is beyond bizarre.

Certain people here like to believe that the press always quotes Slash verbatim and always mis-quotes or mis-represents Axl.

Anyway, I don't get why people think it's such a big deal for him to harbour an interest in going out once more with his old band. He was there from day one, gave it many years of his life, helped craft all their biggest tunes, toured them all over the world and became who he is on the strength of them. I think he has EVERY right to hold the idea that they could work together again. Despite what the box room keyboard heroes here say, that?s what the vast majority of the world would rather see.

He has had the balls to try and fail with other projects, get out there and try to start over. He has mended his fences with all of his old band mates (bar one) and is still a GREAT FUCKING PLAYER. I was lucky enough to have a few beers with him in Dublin many moons ago and he was a gentleman. No ego, no bullshit, no special treatment, just Guinness and good conversation.
I?m sure he could care less what anybody here (including me) has to say about him. But getting worked up over some of these guys is a waste of your energies. Let?s just look forward to another summer of Slash?s sublime guitar playing
