Title: Morbid Angel
Post by: Walk on May 13, 2007, 01:45:12 PM
One thing I never really noticed about this band is that their middle period is surprisingly competent death metal that still remains artistically relevant. Their first two albums are hardcore death metal classics that take a very, very long time to get into, but their next two are some of the best albums for death metal newbies. Covenant and Domination might not have the esoteric appeal and kvlt following of their first two albums, but they're still very good introductions to the genre.

Their latest stuff just seems to lack focus, and their early stuff is inaccessible to most people, but the aforementioned two albums are worth listening to, especially Covenant. Domination was arguably the beginning of the end of Morbid Angel, but it probably gets too much flak for being too similar to Pantera, and at times inferior. It has its moments.

Somehow, I think Morbid Angel might just surprise us one day with a good album. It happened to Deicide.

I've been meaning to check out Morbid Angel, since I hear they've been such an influence to Opeth's Mikael ?kerfeldt. I'll try to get my hands on Covenant then...

You're a more hardcore metal fan, so I'd recommend getting their first two albums first. It takes a while to really absorb them, though. I prefer Altars of Madness to Blessed are the Sick, but they're both very good, though inaccessible to the inexperienced.

Oh, and Covenant has Angel of Disease, the best Morbid Angel song ever. Hell, even Korn found the need to rip off one of its riffs. Their song Ball Tongue stole the chorus riff. Ytmnd is down, but the "riff rip-off" series has it.

By the way, Angel of Disease is actually one of the older Morbid Angel songs, going back to their mid 80's era. The fact that Korn's riff only appeared after the song was finally put on an album and heard by the masses shows what trend whores Korn are.

I always prefer  Blessed are the sick to Altars of madness . Both are damn fine and worth checking out for anybody who hasn't hear them yet .

One thing I really noticed about this band is that they suck ass.

I dislike the instrumental parts on Blessed are the Sick. Altars of Madness is more consistent to me, even though it's simpler and more one dimensional.

One thing I really noticed about this band is that they suck ass.

They do now, but they were one of the finest death metal bands out there in the late 80's and early 90's.
