Title: Just 16
Post by: oldgunsfan on May 11, 2007, 09:33:28 PM
does anyone know of any audio or video of this song?  I think they only played it 5/3 at The Avalon and it's about the only new song they played I haven't seen anything on....

Just from the low quality boot, I'm really digging the groove to this song too.
Definitely a departure from Contraband's style, it sounds more like Stones influenced classic rock, which is just fine by me.

Really looking forward to hearing this on the EP in a few weeks. : ok:

At the Washington DC concert the other night, Scott introduced "Just 16" with a long story about hearing news reports about a schoolboy hooking up with his teacher.

I thought they were going to do a cover of Van Halen "Hot for Teacher."

"Just 16" is a cool song though.

Holy fucking shit... :o

Comparing the original mp3 that was uploaded to what you can hear on that youtube link is a real eye-opener!
I thought the song sounded ok on the live mp3, but you couldn't make out much. But now I think this is my new favourite Libertad track of what I've heard so far.

Here I am worrying about Slash playing bland music on Libertad, and after seeing that I have no worries at all.
That's kickass rock n roll riffing AND two shit-hot solos in the one song! ;D

Fucking awesome!!!

Bring on the album already!!! : ok:

studio record company execs must be officially fucked in the ear, since they selected SBQM as a first "rocking" single instead of this kickass tune with a great hook  :-\

Didn't he do some backing vocals on Be the ball? and some on it's so easy when played live?

This song, is so fucking Sick!  It ooouuuuzes a old school Dino Rock!  Fucking killer, dirty, sleezy, sexy, bad ass!

Weiland has come such a long way.  This band has come a long way.  I don't care if you like VR or not, you cannot deny how bad ass this song is!

Okay, I will say it.? This is the best VR Song I have ever heard.? Yes, better than Slither.? Well, studio version may not be as good, but so far, this is right up there. My God, pure rock n roll.? Almost like Nighttrain was for me.? In that vein.

An even longer live version.

ive finally gave this song a listen... and i love it straight away.

i wasnt impressed with any of the studio previews apart from Last Fight, but i thought that was ok at best.

now with the official video, I really like She Builds Quick Machines, ive seen it for the rocker it is... but Just 16 blows the bollocks off that. I might really like this album afterall.

They played 6 new songs and psycho killer when I saw them last week and this song was by a fucking mile the best. Everyone I was with said the same thing. Probably shoulda been the single.

Where was THAT Slash hiding on the other new songs?  Typical record label move to put out that generic, corporate rock SBQM instead of this rocker, this so-so live footage sounds better than the finished clips of those other songs

THIS should be the single. SBQM is the weakest song ive heard so far.

She mine sounds better live, BUT ill reserve judgement until I hear the studio version

By the way anyone else worried that this song will not be quite as kick ass on the album as it is live?

We've seen it before, I mean just listen to she mine live and then listen to the little album snippet...

Sorry to shoot down anyone's hopes, but having bought the EP today, it does lack less punch on the studio version than live, as the production and guitar sounds are very polished. It still rocks though being a bit 'poppy' sounding, but the solos sound really cool.

This is a very, very good song.  To those disappointed with the production, play it in your car at top volume and see if youre still dissatisfied.  Getting attached to the rawness of a songs live sound before hearing the studio version is a downside of listening to bootlegs of new music, but youll most likely get used to it after two or three listens.  I felt similar disappointment upon hearing the studio versions of "Slither" and "You Got No Right."  I was especially disappointed that "Slither" was abridged from the early live rendition.  I have obviously changed my mind since.

This track in particular undoubtedly ranks in my top three or four VR songs.

i loved the song. but the vocals are horrid.

got sounds like a disabled (metally) person making random noises. i really cant understand him.

the song itself though, musically owns

Unless theres a surprise standout rocker on Libertad, this should be the third single.  The video writes itself.

Wow, this song is better than SBQM by miles. Slash is actually doing bluesy stuff here, and I'm always happy when he goes back to his roots.

Oh my..god

The guitar work, the vocals in the verses, this song is so amazing. The lyrics to that really cool sounding second verse go as follows...

Rollin' in the streetlights - In his old man's ride
Head in his lap - Going up-and-down, up-and-down, Oh-No cop lights
Standin' in the courthouse - god and every child
He said "Your honor, I plead to - the crime of being satisfied"

Nah I think he just copied and pasted the lyrics that Booker posted over at Vrforum.com, they seem to be pretty much spot on. I actually like the idea behind this song since the whole student/teacher relationship seems to be happening more and more these days...

Oh and thanks booker for transcribing them?

Maybe it's because im using headphones,or you guys are listening to low bitrate versions because the lyrics aren't muffled at all. In the verses especially. you can make out each word perfectly.

Im tempted to call this VRs best song.  I think I personally rank it above "Slither."  I havent decided if I like it more than "You Got No Right," but its possible.

A lot of people criticized VRs first album for not living up to the bands potential, and as much as I like that album, there was truth to that.  "Just Sixteen" is the sound of them fulfilling that potential.  I usually avoid making comparisons between new music and Appetite For Destruction, and some might find this blasephemous or overhyping, but I feel that this song has the sound and energy of that albums songs.  It has to be the most GNR-sounding song theyve recorded to date, and its a direction Id certainly like to see them take more often.

I'm an avid VR fan, and I still don't know if I'm sold on the production and sound of these Libertad tracks. They're still way too "poppy" sounding for my liking, Just 16 included. I know as an artist you like to grow and branch out musically, but after being spoilt with the guitar sounds on AFD and UYI, I'm not really digging Slash's rhythm sound on these tracks.
His solos sound cool, but the riffs just lack punch and grit. I think Dave's guitar sound is also interfering with my enjoyment of the track too, as when I panned the balance over to listen to just Slash playing, it sounded better, although still not as crunchy as I would have liked.

And before any VR fans jump on me, I'm just being completely honest about what I'm hearing.

I agree with Booker about hearing songs live before studio not helping, but I just ain't digging the studio stuff that much unfortunately.
