Title: Rocket Queen
Post by: SirTed on May 09, 2007, 12:07:37 PM
I'm slowly trying to put together a decent collection of live Guns stuff, and everyone on the board has been totally helpful, so I thought I'd throw this line out there to see what I could catch.

Rocket Queen is probably my all-time favorite Guns song, and it dawned on me today that I don't have a good live version of it, besides the one on Live Era (which I love) and I was just wondering if there were song paticular performaces of the song that rang out to people as being Really, Really, Great.

Thanks.

The Vocals from Live Era aren't live, but re-recorded in the studio... but it's the best version ever... Axl sounds perfect on it...

Check out 06-28-1987

So it's true that some or all of the vocals on Live Era are re-recorded? The most that I ever heard was that it was a rumor. Huh. They are great on that song though aren't they. Are all the tracks re-records?

I think that Rock In Rio-Lisbon was one of the weakest shows from 2006, but the Rocket Queen version at that show was fantastic, incredible

Tokyo '92 with ''It Tastes Good, Dont It?'' is also killer.

Tokyo '92, is that the show off the UYI DVD? or is that a different Tokyo show altogether?

I'm a huge fan of the Tokyo version as well...the little groove in the middle before "It Tastes Good" is cool and right after "it Tastes Good" the band kicks it back into the song and Axl starts rockin' with the mic and stand...very fuckin cool!!!

Its too bad there isn't a recording from the first Las Vegas show from last september.  Tommy requested to Axl that the band play Rocket Queen and they proceeded to rip into the best version I've ever heard.  :peace:

I agree with Esteban on the Rio version.   I also listen to the Nampa, Idaho 2002 version a good bit.

The Marquee 87 (or 88?) version is the best one. At least you can hear the amazing rhythm guitar by Izzy.

Wasn't it during Rocket Queen at the Ritz that Axl hurled his mic at the sound guy but missed him and hit Guns manager...  :hihi:  because, as Axl put it, it sounded like spaceships landing on stage.

yeah ive heard those rumors as well. i find it quite possible, seeing as GNR has done stuff like that with Live LIke a Suicide.

but yeah, id say go for the performance from the Live in Tokyo DVD. Has the "Tastes good dont it?" part in the middle.

I agree about Axl's voice, the band was fine as well, just I didn' like the Rocket Queen outro, when Finck does his solo, I think he broke every magic in that moment with his bored and pernicious solo...

go listen to noblesville, Ind 1991...its the best ive heard...slash doesnt (or forgets) to use his les paul in this version. instead he uses the guitar he uses in YCBM (dont know the name)...as it turns out, the sound effects from this guitar played on RQ are amazing......

I really like Robin's solo in this song, but I could do without Ron or Bucket way too fast solo in the 2nd half. I wish Robin would play all the solo. :(

I used to hate this guitar. I really feel like the sound is from a cheap and a non-quality guitar, if you compare to the Les Paul sounds...

Have you seen/heard Noblesville, Ind. 1991? It one of the best shows around. Also, its the first time they played NR live......Axl pulled a "curveball" on the band and played it....

Mockingbird's are every bit as quality as a Les Paul, especially the original, non-reissues. There is definitely a tonal difference, which is totally a personal preference, and that might be what you are hearing. The Mockingbird's Floyd Rose bridge definitely doesn't have the sustain and beefiness of a non-trem Les Paul tuneomatic bridge, which is a signature of Slash's main tone. That's probably why you aren't digging it, it isn't the trademark Slash tone.

But from a construction standpoint, they are quality axes.

I know about the Mockingbird, I'm a guitarist too, I just don't like its sound.

For example, I think Slash got a better tone when played with that Fender black strato in St Louis.

And yeah, I have the Noblesville bootleg. Still think it doesn't sound as good as the Les Pauls and the floyd rose (specially on YCBM) sounds too out of place IMO.

I don't think Ron plays thaaaaaat fast, just faster than Slash used to play... but not really really fast. I think he didn't want to play damn fast, but didn't want to do it slowly.
I didn't realize Robin had a lil bit in the solo, lol. But it sounds good definitively. :P

its all good. different opinions....but i think the reason why RQ sounds so cool from Noblesville is that the sound does sound out of place because we are so used to the les paul sound on the song.....it makes the song darker and more emotionial IMO...
