Title: New tommy stinson cd? (what if)
Post by: growler on May 08, 2007, 03:43:56 AM
While we are all waiting for chinese democracy to come out.... and we are all sure the band members have a lot of down time...dizzy with hookers and blow...bumble with side projects...I would love to see tommy come out with a new cd... there is no denying VGH was a great album....I wonder if he is working on new stuff....does anyone else think a new tommy album would be great(as long as it dosnt interfere with GNR plans?

Quoting Pepper Berry from tommystinsonforum.com:

If you want to hear a great "Mats" song sort kinda not, but yeah, then buy or download from ITunes the soundtrack to the animated movie OPEN SEASON that Paul scored. The song "Right To Arm Bears" is Paul with Tommy and Josh Freese. It's great, hilarious lyrics! There are 2 other songs on that soundtrack that the three of them played together on but I can't remember them right now.

Tommy's "Hey You" from VGH is featured in the new film In the Land of Women starring Adam Brody.  Apparently, there's quite a chunk of the song in the film.
(that's a few weeks old, and I doubt Tommy had to do anything on that but getting the check cashed)

Then he also worked on the score (not soundtrack) for the movie Catch and Release (check it out here (http://www.amazon.com/Catch-Release-Score-Tommy-Stinson/dp/B000MGVBZ0/sr=8-1/qid=1171214229/ref=sr_1_1/102-3588959-4072131?ie=UTF8&s=music)).

Oh, and I think he must've been busy with Gn'R rehearsing for that tour everybody says is coming up , but that's a guess :P .

probably did some physical therapy.
I busted my hand about the same time as tommy... and it was only a slight impact, and my thumb still hurts.
depending on the damage, his hand will heal, but I'm pretty sure that it will still hurt when he's playing.

My honest opinion is you've just wasted a bit more than two years of your life because you don't have that album. Tommy's stuff is amazing, I love it . Go to Tommy's myspace (http://www.myspace.com/tommystinsonofficial) to listen to some tunes from the album.

Definitely one of the best GN'R related solo albums.

It's got a bit of everything really and a bunch of names you might recognize from GN'R plays on it too.

After that, check out the record by his old band Perfect.

I feel pretty fortunate to have seen him play a solo show back in 2004. He was playing as the opening act for Jesse Malin over here in Europe. It was just Tommy and Joe (from Alien Crime Syndicate) on stage.

I told my friend who was with me at the show that "next time you'll see Tommy, it'll be in an arena", and I was right.....  :hihi:

Tommy did good stuff with VGH.   I'd gladly buy his next solo album, if it ever happens.

Also hung around with him after he played for about an hour

VGH is one of my all time favourite albums. I'm still convinced Axl sings on it as well. See if you can hear him.

I was just thinking about a new Tommy cd the other day, since it is approaching almost three years since VGH.  It was an amazing album and I was lucky enough to see him back in January 05.

Check out some of his live shows on the tube of you.  Pretty awesome renditions and a very intimate setting.

That's a really good album all-round. For some reason, Westerberg making soundtracks to kids' movies makes complete sense. Tommy plays on another track from it too, but I can't remember which.

I'm not really a fan of VGH, but the Bash & Pop and Perfect albums are incredible.

I was surprised by just how good the album was. I enjoyed Bash & Pop and Perfect but VGH was in a league of it's own. The Mats are awesome too, you should get his whole back catalog to be honest  8)

Really excellent CD - highly recommended.

Top bloke as well got to see him twice solo - once in Birmingham and once in Reading in the UK. First time round he was in a little place called The Glee Club in Birmingham UK, afterwards got him to sign a picture I had printed off of him and Axl from Leeds 02. Second time around he signed my copy of VGH - I asked him if he would play 'Motivation' later on the tour seeing as its my favourite song off the album. Pretty stupid question seeing as it was an acoustic tour!

Anyway buy buy

At the 1:05 minute mark of the song "Couldn't Wait", isn't that Axl in the background?

Also, Sean Beaven is the producer of the CD, which I believe added a lot of the extra layers to the songs (I could be wrong, but if you hear Sean's solo CD with his wife you'd know what I meant).

K cool....thanks for the info. I'll check it out. I have a couple of Izzys CDs that I like, but I never got any of the other solo stuff. I looked for Matts CD for a short time, but didn't put much effort into it. I never really liked Gilby or Duff's solo stuff either. But I'll give this record from Tommy a chance for sure.

What's also interesting to note about this album was that Stinson brought the majority of these songs forward to GN'R, but was supported by Axl to do his own thing on the side and get the recognition he deserved for them.
He obviously learned his lesson from Slash's Snakepit.

I'm a huge fan of Tommy's entire back-catalog (obviously. lol), and would kill to hear a follow-up to Village Gorilla Head.  Something with more of a Perfect or Bash & Pop vibe, or even going slightly more into the territory he's delved into with GN'R would be great.  It shows how versatile of a musician he is that he can play Johnny Thunders-influenced punk, to more chilled out, Stones/Faces style rock, to "mature" singer/songwriter tracks, to what he's doing in GN'R, which seems to fuse classic rock with nu-metal, with no end of other styles.

Realistically though, I don't see any new material surfacing by Tommy until after GN'R are finished their cycle of touring and (hopefully) album releases... which could be next year, could be in 5 years time.  I'm just really hoping Tommy plays as major role with Chinese Democracy as I assume he has... his playing in The Blues is great.  Would like to see him really step it up on the bass in a few other tracks.

A new album from Tommy would be brilliant!  I've been listening to both VGH and Perfect's album a lot recently and I love both of them.  Esspecially the song Thing I Call My Life, for some reason I love it more than usual recently.

I'd also love it if he did another solo tour since I missed out last time.

But as MrRedfield said I don't see it happening until after GNR stuff is done, which is a shame.

Tank, be sure to tell us what you think. *I* think you've just done yourself a huge favor ;) .

Chief, there used to be a Yahoogroup/mailinglist for Tommy. It was set up back in the day when he was touring, and as it started to got spammed badly and there was low "real" traffic, it was given up in favor of tommystinsonforum.com . I got the info about the movies & stuff from there (and I think I read an Interview with Tommy about it too, maybe it was on the list/forum too).

Yeah, I started to see that there was a lack of forums dedicated to Tommy.  Plenty for GN'R and The Replacements, but none specifically for Tommy.  I knew of the Yahoo Group, but I've never liked those things, so decided it was about time someone made one.  That someone being me.  The next month, I got a message from Tommy's webmaster letting me know that he was going to tell Tommy that he was changing the link on his website over... and then it wasn't long after that before the Yahoo Group was disbanded completely.  We don't get a huge amount of traffic over there (which is nice, because I was afraid I'd get thrown in at the deep end. lol), but we have got some really cool members, all friendly.  So far have had none of the hassle I've seen other admins have to put up with.
New members are always welcome.

Anyway back onto Tommy... now that he's got a movie score under his belt, it'd be nice to see Tommy and Richard working together on a score for something.

What Tommy said was there were a lot of songs he would've never have thought to have written (like the title track) if it hadn't been for Axl's influence, and that Axl had been incredibly supportive.  Not that he wrote the songs for GN'R, and Axl told him to make a solo record from it... the songs wouldn't have fit the musical direction GN'R are taking.

actually....i heard that interview where he said he offered the songs to axl, he never said he wrote them for gnr, but he did say he asked axl if he was interested in using any of them.

and VGH is an excellent cd.  it's been in the cd player in my car since i bought it, which was in like 2004 when it first came out.  it shows the full range of tommy's talents, he plays alot of the instruments himself, and i believe he did the mixing and all of that good stuff himself.

i also had the privilege of seeing himm live a few times.  first time he was with the figgs (an awesome little punk trio). it was in like 2003, before he released vgh.  he did most of the songs totally acoustic, just him and a guitar, then jammed some covers and a few of his songs with the figgs.  second time was in early 2005, and he was with dave phillips (from the catholics)and it was mostly guitar and dave playing the steel slide, tommy playing guitar, really cool show also.

anyone that doesn't have vgh, GO OUT AND GET IT!!

"With Axl, he doesn?t really have his own vision. He likes to take everyone?s two cents and throw it into the soup, get everyone involved and kind of mold it that way. Axl could really take production credit on this record because he took the best of each of us on each song and crammed it together and made it a musical piece."

...

"Axl is more of a collaborator, maybe even to a fault sometimes. He wants everyone involved. Part of that may have come from the old band, where everyone wanted him to sing their songs but didn?t want to play the other guys? songs. It would be like, ?I?m not going to sing on your song unless you play on his song,? and then it becomes infighting and that kind of shit. That doesn?t really keep a band together. On the new record, everyone?s got a bit in there, their part of a song. It lends itself to us feeling a part of the whole record."

Some nice qoutes there that should say it all.
