Most of what I listen to are artists who started out before 2000. Music is entertainment now, rather than art.

We need another Nirvana to come along and shake up the status quo.

if anything the 90's were the thing that sucked....at least people are playing solos again....Velvet Revolver. Black Label Society, Megadeth is still making great records, we got Metallica and GNR working on new stuff and new bands like Avenged Sevenfold who destroy most 90's bands....

Thing about the 80's that I often forget was what a wide range of music was played all the time. There were plenty of big performers/bands that shared that era. The list is quite extensive, think how many big names came out of the 80's. People listened to everything back then, it wasn't so segregated. Fairly difficult to explain what I mean...anybody who grew up during that era knows what I mean.

In any hour you could hear: The Cars, Van Halen, LL Cool J, Billy Idol, Don Henley, Rick Springfield, Commodores, Heart,  Motely Crue, Fat Boys, Prince, Madonna, George Michael, Michael Jackson, The Cult, Tina Turner, John Couger, Billy Ocean, Phil Collins, GnR, Run DMC, Duran Duran, Aerosmith, Culture Club...etc etc. It was such a mixed bag, with so many styles of performers, there was something for everybody all the time, and like I said, so many acts were huge/icons, where today, only a couple of really "huge". There was also plenty of other great music, that were from one hit wonders that remain popular to this day.

There are not icons today like there used to be. It's turn and burn now.....sucks.

You know what sucks more? People who buy this shit and keep these bands alive...

I think the rivalry between The Killers and MY Chemical Romance (and others) is interesting. It's abit like the rivalry between Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet in the 80s.

Nirvana was the last great band. After that.. nothing.

Being a child of the 70s and a teen in the 80s I was really alienated by the music in the 90s too. But, I'm finding that now is a really good time for music. Some of the new stuff? coming out is quite good. Melody has come back. I'm starting to buy new CDs again!

The 90s were pretty awesome. Nine Inch Nails, Blind Melon, Oasis, Alice In Chains, and all the other bands that he named.

Which reminds me of another horrible band.  I had a friend who listened to "Bittersweet Symphony" every Friday after classes, and you could hear it blasting down the hall.  Then I hid the CD.  :hihi:

The 00s rule music-wise. Maybe not if you're totally lacking in imagination and the only way you're able to find new music is by watching MTV, but then again that's your problem.

As for TV, nowadays you've got: Lost, Sopranos, Shield, Prison Break, Heroes... not too shabby in my opinion.

Ever heard of Oasis?? Nirvana were utter shit, but Oasis, especially their first few albums were/are great. Not to mention that Alice in Chains and Soungarden are way better

When I compare the 80's to the 90's in terms of great music put out, the yield is that the 90's totally sucked for music. IMO.

Oasis is OK to me, but nothing spectacular. Blind Melon, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Faith No More, Pearl Jam.. that's why I like the 90's. But I haven't heard anything great after those bands.

Then what did the 80's have?
Guns N' Roses, Megadeth, Motley Crue.
Are the much more bands that were great?

Seriously, most great bands started in the 70s.
Queen, Sabbath, Van Halen (face it, they started in the 70s), Aerosmith

the 80s had loads of bands, not just glam, stuff like janes addiction too.

the 90s had good music, but it was real underground stuff, like the band "love/hate" such a good and under rated band.

I think the 80s was the best period of music.  Like SLC said, you had these artists who were just HUGE and made BIG records and became icons.  Mike Jackson and Madonna to name a few....

The 90s did have some big records, but did any band/artist OWN the 90s the way the two artists above owned their decade?  Off the top of my head i'd say the "biggest" bands in the 90s were:

nirvana
alanis
radiohead

STP/Pearl jam, I don't know, they had 2,3 big cds at best and that was in a small period of time.  Grunge was such a flash in the pan.  after that you had girl power, ska, gangsta rap.....none of these stuck though.

late 90s early 2000s was probably the sorriest time in music...boy bands, britney/christina, rock rap....ugh.  I just puked in my mouth.

Yeah that's true. But 80's had alot of good bands too. Gn'R, M?tley, Smack, Peer G?nt, Hanoi Rocks, RHCP, Metallica.. + Misfits (if you can count them in the 80's : ok:)

But what does 00's have? Nothing to me at all.

There's a really shitty trend in Australia lately that all commercial radio stations sound exactly the fucking same. :rant:

They all play the same 5-10 crap songs and play them over and over on repeat all day, all week. Even if there was a chance you might've liked a song, you'd get sick of it within a few days because they overplay it so much.

I have to ask myself who listens to this crap, letalone requests it to death ???

Maybe that's why I don't like most "pop" music, I don't play a song 50 times in a row to make myself sick of it.
I'd rather just listen to something else, variety is the spice of life after all.

Radio was probably similar back in the 80's and 90's, but there was more music I liked back then.
I can't remember it ever being as bad as it is now.

just b/c you might not like the music doesn't mean most other people didn't.? their songs are STILL played today, still listened to today - they are classics.? I can't think of anything in the 2000s that will be played 25+ years from now.

both MJ and madonna are wierd as hell compared to their 80s selves, but that doesn't change the past.

oh and ask yourself what guitarists played with MJ on some songs....i guess Slash and eddie van halen are pansies too?   ::) ::)

Around the time of the first Gulf War. I was in Amerika at the time. The troops were asking who was this Bart Simpson their wives and g/fs were writing about.

There are good bands out there, you just have to look for them.  It's not all coporate music.  Bands like Modest Mouse, Kings of Leon, Sparta, Bright Eyes, Hot Hot Heat, Arcade Fire, Fiona Apple, to name a few, are great bands.  They may not sell millions of albums like American Idol crap but they are very talented.

Most of the 80s consists of epic fail.

Modest Mouse is the next CD that I will be buying. Had it on my list for awhile. Kings of Leon - the latest song grows on you.

00's have some good bands but they are mostly underground. its getting alittle better with bands like Silvertide, wolfmother etc.

But in general, way too many trends. theres no Artist that you could say definitely ruled for the main part of the decade
