Title: CD to open album/all future shows???
Post by: SINSHINE on May 07, 2007, 07:52:31 AM
After hearing the intro to Chinese Democracy, is there any doubt NOW that this song will not only open the album, but will most likely be there show's opener for a long time to come? Sure, we haven't heard the rest of the album, but I really can't picture CD being placed anywhere else on an album other than the opening track. I really can't get enough of the song (feels like 'Oh, My God' meets 'Speak to Me/Breathe' off of Dark Side of the Moon) and keep invisioning how it would go down at a concert.

Anyone agree? Disagree?

I did not reaise the true potential of this song.. fuckign amazing!

It MUST open the album. I reckon would be an awesome show opener too!

JUngle is always good tho to get the crowd and those unfamiliar with GNR going

Are you talking about a song that hasn't been officially released yet?

yes, thats why we're trying to reason through assumption.

The proselytizing is getting really stale, stolat.  Things happened, it's over.  You want to wait for the record?  You are truly a god amongst men.  Stop descending upon every thread from your atop your soapbox and reminding people how morally reprehensible they are.

CD should definitely open the album with that trippy intro into the killer riff, then Axl's kickass scream over the top, it just announces itself - Guns N' Fucking Roses are back!!!

It has to open the album without a doubt!!! : ok:

Oh my fucking God!  That intro. scream!!!!

Between '02 and '06 the improvement in the live performance of CD was incredible!  This demo is just insane, completely awesome and in my eyes the most polished of the new leaks.  Yes Sinshine, opener all the way!!!

I always liked the song, but felt it was lacking just a bit...until now, that is! I was hoping it would be strong enough to open shows with as Jungle has been done to death (not to mention works really well as a second song in a set IMO).

The Gibson Amphitheater performances alone justify the choice. The demo just made it absolutely sure. :)

Would be cool, but I'm sure a studio version of Rhiad will be nothing but KILLER. :)

They should start relying on their own material more.  Mabey 4 classic GNR songs.  If we are to accept the new band, let them play their music more.

I agree with Phillyriot. I really hope once the album drops (or before) they start playing the hell out of all their new material. They're at such an exciting point in the band's history (that is, they will be once the album is released). Potentially having 3 albums worth of new material in store for us as well as all the old classic songs will make for a great catalogue for their live shows to pull from.

Since these last few tours have relied so heavily on Appetite, I say, give us the essential 3 (PC, WTTJ, and SCOM) throw in one or two more rotating Appetite songs, Patience, YCBM and two or three other UYI songs that they've yet to play since the 90's and the rest new material (approx. 11 - 13 slots remaining).

Chinese Democracy
Welcome to the Jungle
You Could Be Mine
Mr. Brownstone
Don't Cry
Better
NEW SONG
Civil War
Dead Horse
Sweet Child O'Mine
The Blues
NEW SONG
NEW SONG
There Was a Time
Patience
Nightrain
NEW SONG
Paradise City

ENCORE:
Estranged
NEW SONG

That was my thought exactly till last may.
Now I think people better see at least one show with a set like 2006 as the band plays the oldies amazingly.
after the release I'd love them to do hell of new stuff and just a few~several old songs as extras and encores eventually.
then the jungle can be an opener for the encores.

I wouldn't mind CD opening at all...at this point WTTJ will still not change as the opener though.  Every song seems to have that intro that Axl craves.  His goal to incorporate new ideas into his music is starting to take shape in these new leaks....

Nobody has stopped them from doing it, they have done that themselves.

CD can defenitely be an opener for the album, not so sure about the intro of a show, at least not now that CD is not yet out, when CD is maybe 6 months after hitting stores, it could be considered a great opener... not necessarily, but it's likely.

Well they obviously aren't going to open the shows with CD before the album comes out because not enough people know it.  But once the album is released it's apparent that CD has been set up to be both the first song at shows and the first on the album

it could be a middle of the album intro its not unlike bands to do that (e.g. iron maiden) but could be a contender for opening gnr shows although i think they will always open with an old song

They should start opening with CD, and follow it up with 2-3 more new songs, then go into Jungle. Now that would kick ass!

Title: Re: CD to open album/all future shows???
Post by: estebanf on May 07, 2007, 04:55:40 PM
Chinese Democracy must open the album and all the live shows. The starting of the shows must be:

01) Exorcist III / Chinese Democracy
[not a second of silence between]
02) Welcome To The Jungle
[not a second of silence between]
03) It's So Easy
04) Better

Then you can die in peace  : ok:

Chinese Democracy is a fucking rock bomb. I think it should also be the first single.

Yup agreed. CD now says "GNR is back and we haven't lost a motherfucking thing you stupid fucking TWAT."

Unless they have another rocker we haven't heard that better says that then CD does. But as it stands...

Yes, definitely. This song should open all the upcomin' shows.

Chinese Democracy really rock, and it's in my opinion, the new Guns N' Roses "Welcome To The Jungle" of the 21st century. ;)

Once the album hits, it will be the perfect opener, I agree.  Until then, Jungle it is, and jungle it should be (in my opinion, of course).

Title: Re: CD to open album/all future shows???
Post by: nyd on May 07, 2007, 10:59:49 PM
I liked the Exorcist III opener but it couldn't be used with Chinese Democracy, unless they drop all of the 'chinese whispers' at the start of the leak we've heard. People get psyched up when the Exorcist II speech comes to a close, they would need to jump straight in with the CD riff in my opinion.

I'd be happy just to see the setlist change a little ~ the one they have used for the last 5 years is getting a little tiresome, although the additions of Better etc did justify me going to the shows again.

Title: Re: CD to open album/all future shows???
Post by: estebanf on May 08, 2007, 12:29:17 AM
I think GNR should do a very intimate show, like they did at The Plumm the 18th of March in 2006, with a setlist composed only by new songs. If they play ALL the new tracks, plus a pair of unheard songs, and some guitar solos, they can almost make a decently long set.

I  only imagining me at that show

The first time I heard this new intro was last May at Hammerstein, but the idea you're talking about didn't really hit me until I saw them do it again here in Detroit last November.

I don't think they'll change the first song of the shows until the album comes out, but I certainly think so afterwards.

I just heard 4 leaked tracks that sounded f***** awesome! I wonder if they are final versions because they sounded so good and were posted by a major radio station. Sorry I can't give out more according to board rules. But after hearing CD, I agree! It should open all shows and it would be a great idea for VMA.

After hearing those songs, I am so psyched! I want the CD now! I want to play it over and over again! But, this makes me think it won't be long and the disc will actually drop this year! I heard Blues, Chinese Democracy, IRS, and There Was a Time. CD and Blues my favorite so far but There was a Time was decent too. IRS is a good rocker but it's ok.

I agree, except replace Blues with IRS. I can take or leave The Blues and Catcher in the Rye (my least favorite of the new songs). But I love the others. TWAT is one of the best songs I've heard in years ? one of my favorite songs of all time. Awesome lyrical content, awesome song. So is CD and IRS!

Long live GNR!

No,

The opener should stay as Jungle. It has to be familiar to everyone. Most of the crowd dont know the words etc etc.. so its only good for people who have heard the leaks.
Jungle gets things off to a good start.

Title: Re: CD to open album/all future shows???
Post by: SINSHINE on May 10, 2007, 08:09:46 AM
I know what you are saying, Brundle, but I have to dissagree. IMO, the SECOND song in a live set is the most important song of the whole show.

The lights go down at the beginning of a show and everyone is going nuts, screaming, etc. The band comes on and needs to deliver a nice solid punch with their first song, BUT it doesn't necessarily need to be their biggest or most known song. The following song, however, will set the tone for the rest of the show and NEEDS to be one of the bands biggest hits. The crowd is already pumped after the show has started and now you hit them with one of your biggest hits to gain even more momentum.

Good examples I've seen of this idea are...

Aerosmith:

song 1. Eat the Rich
song 2. Toys in the Attic

and

song 1. Mama Kin
song 2. Love in an Elevator

Metallica:

song 1. So What
song 2. Creeping Death

and

song 1. Breadfan
song 2. Master of Puppets

Faith No More:

song 1. Collision
song 2. Midlife Crisis

That's just the way I see it.

This are some great examples and I agree with you. Alot of people are caught up in the excitement of the whole thing and don't really get to enjoy the first song right anyways.

Agreed, and you made great examples.

Look at the first 5 songs in the Aerosmith show I attended a month ago:

01.Love In An Elevator
02.Toys In The Attic
03.Dude Looks Like a Lady
04.Fallin? In Love [Is Hard On The Knees]
05.Cryin?
06.Crazy
07.Jaded

After that smashing start, people would accept new songs, solos, everything... the start of a show is decisive to set the tone for the rest of the show. And ''Toys In The Attic'' is the big gun there, and it's placed second in the setlist like you said.

Guns should open from now on with 1) Chinese Democracy 2) Jungle 3) ISE 4) Better 5) SCOM, and then they can add several new songs (TWAT, Rhyad, completely new songs), or rare songs from UYI like ''Yesterdays'' or ''Breakdown''.

I agree...CD followed by Jungle would be AWESOME! Only I would follow Jungle up with YCBM...but that's just personal taste. Like you said, esteban, wait to get into the set a few songs before bringing out the new (unheard) material.

the first time i heard the newest chinese democracy version i thought the same thing....album opener....show opener.

i think jungle needs to be replaced as opener.  it's very cool as an opener, but they need to move on to something new.  and quite honestly, jungle is a kinda hard song to sing, axl usually sounds better on it after he's warmed up.

by any accounts, i don;t really care what song they open with live, or what songs they p[lay, just so long as they play live and i get to see them.  and the sequence of the songs on the cd, i could give a rat's ass about that either, as long as i have the finished product in my possession.

^CD is very similar to Jungle in a lot of ways, musically. I would  support the "new Jungle" so we can move  on. I say CD should replace  Jungle. Maybe delete Jungle altogether  or put it later in the set, like they did with Nightrain, which should not be replaced.

Where in the set did WTTJ go on shows where it was not the opener? What other songs has GNR opened with?

(i know i'm getting off topic but i'm very curious)

Once the album is released, an opener with CD followed by Jungle would be nuts.  That'd be an amazing one-two punch to get things going.  Especially the new intro they did for CD on the last tour, where the lights went off and flashed along with Robin's opening riff

anywhere they want to put it.  back in the old days it wasn't the opener, they would play it 3 or 4 songs in.  i can remember a number of shows opening with nighttrain.

it is.  it totally reminds me of old guns.  it just has that fuck the system rawness of true rock and roll.  i love it.  i don;t think they should take out jungle, there are certain songs they will alwyas have to do live if they are going to call themselves guns n roses, and jungle is one of them.

Personally, i think "stolat" may be pretty damn apt by the time CD is released  ;D

Chi D works well as the first song in the encore.

I think CD would be a great opener once CD is released and/if CD is the first single.  Jungle could be used as a song to "wake up" the crowd after a ballad/slower song.  Axl could start talking about some nonsense and then lead into a story about about jungle and end it by asking the now famous question:

Do you know where the fuck you are?

The Gibson Amphitheater performances alone justify the choice. The demo just made it absolutely sure. :)

out of everything, just send me a studio version of silkworms and il be happy. that is going to sound so fucking good.
Would be cool, but I'm sure a studio version of Rhiad will be nothing but KILLER. :)

Second that.

And yes, I think Chinese Democracy should be the opener on the album. But not to open all of the shows. It could be a nice surprise to change the first song sometimes. But to me, WTTJ works way better than CD would. The intro is amazing, but vocals don't come straight to your face like they do on Jungle.. Jungle just fuckin' explodes after the intro :smoking: But I'd like to see some variation, open with Nightrain or It's So Easy for chance. And with Chinese Democracy too.

I'd be ok with this too. One thing I really did love about the UYI tour was the revolving openers.

my theory...

If the album Chinese Democracy is already out... then it it will probably open some shows...   you may notice most rock bands will usually open with the first song off their new album- if they're touring promoting new material.

YCBM? Really? Doesn't seem like an opening song to me. Great second or third song...long intro to give the vocalist a break. Even though it's in my top three favorite Guns songs, I don't know if I'd like to see it open a show. I saw Aerosmith open a show a few years ago with 'Walk This Way' and, in the same light, just didn't seem right to me.

What shows did GN'R open with YCBM?

I agree.  I don't know of any shows that were opened with You Could Be Mine.  Some of the shows opened with Jungle though.  One of the shows I saw - in Hampton VA - they opened with the first 5 songs off Appetite in order.

GN'R opened with ''You Could Be Mine'' in July 11th, 1991, at the McNichols Sports Arena, Denver, Colorado

Yes they did open with YCBM. I just listened to that show (see estebanf's post above) the other day, and I think it works pretty well actually. Great show overall.
And during the Gn'R-Metallica -tour, they opened with Out Ta Get Me several times. And if you can't believe THAT, I can tell you they have opened with Coma too : ok:

I think that this time they'll be opening with "Welcome To The Jungle". OK!

Very possible. But they should make some changes in the 3-5 first songs. For example, from UYI-tour:

1. Welcome to the Jungle
2. Garden Of Eden
3. It's so Easy

or:

1. Welcome to the Jungle
2. Nightrain
3. Live and Let Die
4. The Garden

or:

1. It's So Easy
2. Mr. Brownstone
3. Nice Boys

or:

1. Pretty Tied Up
2. Mr. Brownstone
3. Bad Obsession
4. Perfect Crime
5. Dust N' Bones

or:

1. Welcome to the Jungle
2. Mr. Brownstone
3. My Michelle
4. Live and Let Die

And I don't mean they should play these songs, but one reason why love the UYI-tour shows is that they had so much variety. The first three examples are from shows that were held in the same month. Even little changes are welcome..

CD would be a great opener, it has that 'suspense' thing going.. only thing is, most of the people going to the show haven't heard it so it won't (I think) cause a reaction like WTTJ does.. yet anyway.

^^that's a good point.  It would work better if the album were out already, then people would be somewhat familiar with the new songs.  tha may happen, that may not.......i'm betting on not, at least not for the beginning of the tour.

Title: Re: CD to open album/all future shows???

It's perfect as the encore.

99% of the audience just want to hear the old stuff. It wouldn't make sense not to open with Jungle at this point.

Title: Re: CD to open album/all future shows???
Post by: Regibold on May 20, 2007, 02:13:10 AM
Well if you look at the illusions tour, there were few different songs that opened certain shows. For ex: Right Next Door To Hell. Jungle's 95% of the time been the opener, but I think if they opened with C.D., it would be a shock at first, something nobody was expecting, but I think the fans would get used to it. For example, say the album drops in Sep., then tour behind the actual album for saaaay a year, C.D. should be the opener at least for the tour that eventually backs the album. Then after C.D. opens the show, do Jungle, without "You know where the fuck you are" intro, only because that obviously works better if the song opened the show.

Yeah why not. So it's a new song. Velvet Revolver are doing the same with Let it Roll. Not always the same opener. Welcome to the jungle is a really good choice to open with, but there a more good openers.

yeah thats a very good point a lot of people are not going to know about the new band and new songs (even now) so they will probably be opening with an old song for a while, it would make a good encore as its a second chance to have an intro like that

i think alot more people know there's a new band then you realize.  especially since VR has been pretty visible.  granted not alot of people know who the new band members are, but they realize it's not gnr circa 1987.  they've heard of the fabled chinese democracy for awhile, they want to hear new music.  they want to hear the old favorites, no doubt, but i think even casual fans expect something new.

i say move on.....it's a new era, they should open with a new song.  something that belongsjungle definitely has a key spot on the set list, but i think it's time to retire it as opener.

If they opened the show with Coma every die hard in the arena would flip a shit. That would be like the worth the price of the ticket alone.

But to stay on topic with the first post, CD would be a badass opener. If they really nail it like it sounds on the demo.
