axlfink - i can get in touch with the lesser kings if you think they'd be interested in me doing some work for them. i am a graphic designer by trade, so i would certainly be willing to give them an estimate for packaging design. i'm located in central california (about 6 hours north of LA) so i'm not exactly local, but i would think the distance would be manageable.

everyone else - thanks for the kind words. i was going for something that was very modern and forward thinking, but still had enough of the classic guns n' roses style to not seem completely out of place. sort of like what i would imagine axl is trying to do with the music. but then, i spent about an hour on it, whereas axl has spent 11 years or so, so i would imagine his would be a bit higher quality.

shit, i have some artwork that i did aswell that i want you guys to take a look at, but i just moved and i won't have access to my computer for a month   :(  anywho, i'll put it up asap. it's not quite like the other ones on here. it's red with a dragon in the middle, swirled up, took the image off of google, i think there is a baby inside the coiled dragon, and then i have the old school bullet casing logo, roughed it up a bit, and changed the font, and put it in the middle of all of it....anyways, if you can visualize that, cool, if not, be patient, i'll have it up... I'm gonna push for members of the GN'R campe to get aquainted with you and your majestic cover. These are all great designs, but as an artist myself, none of these have really connected with my likings as much as yours. Trust me, my opiniond are vary valid and honest. As an artist, I feel it's an obligation to help you out, and that's what I'm gonna try to do. :yes:

RKD, I think its a cool album cover. I would not be disappointed if I walked into the record store and seen it was the cover. Its simple and to the point. Nothing intricate or anything. I really hate that bike cover concept. Hopefully Axl has trashed that idea. In my opinion, I would like to see Axl use a graphic photo of those murdered college students at the Tianhamen Square Massacre for the album cover. But I doubt that he uses it, or any cover in reference to China. Chinese Democracy is a metaphor. It has nothing to do with actual democracy in China. People seem to forget that sometimes. So basically, all the china inspired album covers should be thrown in the garbage. I'm not saying all these fans who came up with these CD covers are shitty artists. They did a good job, but their covers just aren't appropiate for the situation.

He's talking about the Chinese government, who have been known to rule with an "iron fist", in other words they're not very nice. "Even with your iron fist, it's all that you've got to rule / fool the nation".  This song is not about the ex-Gunners.

I like it RKD, but I prefer the cover in Nesquick's post. What I do like about yours the simple outline of Axl - fits in with his illusive personality, as if he's there but not.

Ultimately, without hearing the album its difficult to know what cover fits the best - try submitting it to Merck and see what happens!

The song is about struggling to move on in the duality of the individual and / vs. the collective, to part or to unite, risk versus reward. The lyrics are from a "watching the watchers" point of view, regarding the two key factors that dominate a society - the leader and the followers. Can be related to the chinese situation, the music industry or the band / the fans.

Now that brief summary could be nothing but bullshit since it's only my interpretation of the lyrics. But at least I made up my mind...

Your understanding of Falun Gong is wrong. It's not a person, it's some sort of philosophy. Ever heard of Qui Gong meditation? There you go! Falun Gong has a huge following in China. People who practise the meditation in public are put to jail, since the goverment declared it the evil because it takes people's minds and attention away from communism and lets them focus.

This is just gerat for cover!!!

It was a guy who was a graphic designer or something. He's done a cool job. The only defect was that the cover was little hard to be GN'R related, maybe it was reffering more about China, this cover didn't have lots of feeling onto.

The last one with the bike is very clever. I'd like to see a common cover for Chinese Democracy. The Axl's Don't Cry stuff shows desperation, but it wouldn't be wise to show and old picture of himself? :P and recycle it anyway.

wow, illusions, great work! i really dig the image usage on both the front and cd face. i'm not so big on the large "compact disc" logo though. i've always hated that thing. i think it would be awesome if they used your imagery with no text for the front of the cd booklet and then did the type on a translucent sticker on the outside of the cd case. a hardcore band called "he is legend" had their artwork that way on their most recent cd and it looked really cool.

I was just looking up more info on the hammer and sickle thing as i thought it was a Russian thing opposed to a Chinese thing. Then i found all this info: and it appears that the Chinese did use a hammer and sickle although the Chinese hammer and sickle is different by design to the Russian hammer and sickle (see: image below).

The hammer and sickle is a symbol used to represent communism. The two tools are symbols of the peasantry and the industrial proletariat respectively; placing them together symbolises the unity between agricultural and industrial workers. The Hammer and Sickle was originally a hammer crossed over a plough (form a visual point of view, the sickle works better  ;D) The Hammer and Sickle, though in use since 1917/18, was not the official symbol until 1922, before which the original Hammer and Plough insignia was used by Red Army and Red Guard on uniforms, medals, caps etc.

Ecuador and Egypt have eagles on their flag but, people associate them with America cause thats what you know. So if you read or do history it sometimes helps. This is not to be a ass or anything. Well it is when people do not know what they think they know.

I think you should try and get your artwork into the hands of someone involved in the band. Its that good. That is, unless they have already decided on the artwork. Try Mysteron or someone like that.

With some of the cool artwork in this section, Axl doesn't have any reason at all to blame a delay on artwork. It would be a really nice touch if they used some fan made art for the cover

No way that is the artwork. It looks cool (congrats to whoever made it) but after spending 13 million on the recording of this album not mentioning the energy etc. of all involved I find that cover leaves much to be desired.

if you look at that bike properly it has to be photoshopped as its nots actually on the wall its standing up with no one on it, no stand and not resting on anything, as well as no shaddow so got to be a faked picture although there is nothing stopping a band from using a photoshopped picture on the real cover

when i have some free time i always like to come back to this thread and look over the ideas.

but i definitely think that the album title should NOT feature any text with the GNR name and album title. i think that, with all the mystery and the hype surrounding the album, the last thing they should do is make it too 'obvious'. and i think the more abstract the album cover, the better. id rather they went for something all out unexpected even if it doesnt look like a typical 'rock band' album cover.

but hows the average consumer going to recognize the album then? buy a mystery product?

Not putting the Guns N' Roses name on the product would be a big mistake.

I'm pretty sure that even if it did have an obscure cover, they would have one of those stickers on the cd case with "CHINESE DEMOCRACY - The new GUNS N ROSES album" or something like that.

I like that but you have GNR in pink on the back, there is no GNR in pink.  And where is Madagascar?  Kind of reminds me of a Fleetwood Mac cover, Bare Trees.

Here's one of the mock-ups that I made and the cover currently serving as my iTunes placeholder. The whole Chinese/Asian theme is really limitless interms of artistic potential. Really inspiring stuff. I always thought the Chinese cover as a really simple cover so this one's pretty basic.

Yeah that's a good one of the SF Poster. The font that says "Guns N' Roses" and "Chinese Democracy" sucks though. And the album won't be parent advisory, but yeah it's an awesome design, I dig it.

Well, considering from the 6 or so songs that I assume are going to appear on the album there aren't any curses on those.

And parent advisory albums typically sell less and WalMart and it's affiliates don't carry Explicit records. So, considering finances are a big part of the record industry these days and a lot of money invested in Chinese, I'd think that an assumption that sales want to be maximized and costs minimized would go unscrutinized since 2 different versions of an album (one 'clean', one 'explicit') would be more costly.

He's talked about liking Rod Stewart before, but I don't remember where. It gets a little muddy after 20+ years of GNR facts. Anyway if the band performing "Sailing" and him giving Rod a really warm introduction before introducing "Young Turks" in the Grand Theft Auto game are any indication, I'd say he's a big fan just based off that alone.

Maybe he is maybe he isn't. No big deal. but stating a conjecture as a fact is a no-no.

and to such a simplistic thinking, he'd be a big fan of thousand musicians, from Barry manilow, C manson, to the killers or a drunk who sung kohd with him in an osaka pub.
He seems to have a most unbiased appreciation of music. what is the logic of specifying the two.

That is quite brilliant. I can't wait to see the real deal. It will be so great to finally have a face to the album. It'd be like talking to someone for 10 years over the phone, then finally seeing what they look like. The image, IMO, is gonna be a big factor...

Why doesnt someone knock up some artwork with the 'Chinese dude on the boat' as displayed on the video screens during the intro to Chinese Democracy (the song). I remeber the image on the video screens was played in paris 2006.
This would be a good bet for Final artwork as its already official 'artwork'.

This is my first take on some Chinese Democracy cover art, I started using this program yesterday. I must say though, that the NY-tourlogo-picture in the background is not made by me, I remember saving it from a thread like this (if not this one, I can't remember). I think it's really cool done, so I edited it a bit further, and used it with the fishing picture. Actually, I think it turned out pretty well :)

this is a project i did for a class. we had to design a CD or DVD cover and i knew from the start i was going to do Chinese Democracy.

cover - i drew the dragon which im happy with but my PS skills are still n00bish but im getting better; i discoverd the "texturize" filter and used that on a picture of the chinese flag. i also warped it to give it some movement. once i put a droop shadow on the dragon it really came to life

back - i wanted this part to look like traditional chinese art. watercolors and kanji. i took a picture of the old GNR logo and threw in there (with water color filter and some erasing precision). the bar code is the symbol for "wealth" (which i get a little humor out of) and i put the Uzi Suicide and Geffen (should it be Interscope?) logos through watercolor filter too.

the track list is made of some songs i have heard and some rumoured titles. so, i havent heard them all but i imagine that listing having a nice flow to it much like Appetite did. i chose 12 songs because thats what was on Appetite as well.

Man, i bet that design will be used for the cover of CD,  not the exact same as your idea but just like the actual poster made for a the show at The Warfield on September 20, 2006.  It is defintley Axl's Style and something that he would go for, kinda reminds me a bit of the UYL covers, if ya know what i mean,  Axl loves Art, Think about it..... why would a GNR poster made for a concert look like that, maybe its just me, but it does seems like something he would use..
