Title: John 5 covers "Welcome To The Jungle" Post by: Spirit on February 14, 2007, 08:16:40 AM Not all is sinister on "The Devil Knows My Name" but there are tunnels to the past greats. John 5 shreds out his version of GUNS N' ROSES' "Welcome To The Jungle" and CHET ATKINS' "Young Thing". "I chose 'Welcome To The Jungle' for one reason ? when I was becoming successful it was easy to stay in the nest back home, then I saw the video and that made me get up and go to Hollywood," explains John 5. "Welcome To The Jungle" will be the first single off the album and will hit the airwaves soon.

Title: Re: John 5 covers "Welcome To The Jungle" Post by: bazgnr on February 14, 2007, 10:02:49 AM "The Devil Knows My Name" melds around clues, quotes and references of serial killers, wielding an eerie tone for those who dare to enter the world of John 5's mind. "I wanted a different tone to the instrumental with twisted imagery of sounds," explains John 5. "Utilizing serial killers came to light for this project while looking at their crimes and how distorted their minds work."
So it's a serial killer-themed album with a few covers thrown in? Weird. Title: Re: John 5 covers "Welcome To The Jungle" Post by: JuicySwoos on February 14, 2007, 10:06:28 AM Any of you "T-Boner"?

Title: Re: John 5 covers "Welcome To The Jungle" Post by: Danny on February 14, 2007, 12:25:33 PM I remember reading that Manson himself named him "John 5". It was sort of a big deal because he was the first MM band member who was not named after a mix of a serial killer/famous diva: Examples: Marilyn Manson, Twiggy Ramirez, Madonna Wayne Gacy.
It's weird that he kept the John 5 monikor, though. Twiggy changed his name back to Jeordie White when he left Manson and started playing with Nine Inch Nails. At least to do a cover of a song for material gain (profit) and put on an album. Therefore, Axl would have to authorize this right? Just interesting how a single for Welcome to the Jungle is hitting airwaves around a tentative release time for Chinese Democracy. Very interesting indeed....

I'm 99% certain that you don't need permission. You just have to pay for rights and ensure the original artist gets the royalities they're entitled to and go through the proper legal channels. What a nightmare it would be if the original artists had to personally approve any and all covers of their work...there are many, many cover songs out there that are likely embarrassing to the original artists, you know? Title: Re: John 5 covers "Welcome To The Jungle" Post by: von on February 14, 2007, 10:53:31 PM John 5 is an amazingly talented player. I've met him a few times, going out to see him again this April. He's a real gentleman. I've collected picks and stuff, you name it. Anyway, I'm very excited to hear this. I've been looking forward to his new solo album and had no idea he was covering WTTJ. Good to hear. Very exciting. I was disappointed his band Loser didn't work out, but it wasn't for my taste anyway. He works out way better for the Zombie. His work with Manson is phenomenal, but Manson isn't all that much a guitar oriented band, and he was lost under a muck of production and such. Too bad. His work with them on The Golden Age of Grotesque was really unique, especially the song "Para-noir" where he solos blindfolded and with headphones on playing other distractions so he can't hear himself play. Anyone interested should check out his work with Rob Halford on the HUGELY underrated 2wo Voyeurs album.

As for permission/royalties, you don't need permission if you sell/profit-from a cover in which you don't change the lyrics, and you never need permission to perform a cover live. So because of what Wierd Al does, he needs permission from the artists he parodies. Richard Cheese however doesn't need permission. Even though he severely changes the style of playing the song, he sticks to the 'general nature' of the work and doesn't modify the lyrics. Cheese does need to cough up 'standard' royalties (pennies per song per album sold), but he can just throw them their money and do his thing. Tribute bands fall into the same category. Didn't some alternative band cover 'Civil War' recently? I'd like to get a copy of that too.. If I may correct you on one thing though, Weird Al has said (and I think it's even on the FAQ section of his website) that he does NOT need permission from artists to parody their songs. ?He asks as a professional courtesy, and when an artist tells him no (so far only Prince has consistently told him no, and Eminem told him he could do...er, whatever that one song was, as long as he didn't do the video too) then he agrees not to do it. ? Hoobastank did the Civil War cover, it's just acoustic/vocals. ?It was ok. Edit: From Al's website Quote Does Al get permission to do his parodies? Al does get permission from the original writers of the songs that he parodies. While the law supports his ability to parody without permission, he feels it's important to maintain the relationships that he's built with artists and writers over the years. Plus, Al wants to make sure that he gets his songwriter credit (as writer of new lyrics) as well as his rightful share of the royalties. Title: Re: John 5 covers "Welcome To The Jungle" Post by: redx on March 13, 2007, 04:05:20 PM Not all is sinister on "The Devil Knows My Name" but there are tunnels to the past greats. "Welcome To The Jungle" will be the first single off the album and will hit the airwaves soon. http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=67020 That's so cool. John 5 is very good  Title: Re: John 5 covers "Welcome To The Jungle" Post by: F*ck Fear on March 14, 2007, 01:04:49 AM At least it was only instrumental. Which sounded great. Best cover I've heard. :smoking:
Title: Re: John 5 covers "Welcome To The Jungle" Post by: snakepiter on April 20, 2007, 05:49:47 AM john 5 talks about covering welcome to the jungle in knac.com
KNAC.COM: How did you want to make this CD different from your previous instrumental releases? JOHN 5: I wanted to make it a little bit more extreme than the first two releases. I wanted to give, as much as I could. I kind of put everything in there but the kitchen sink. The first song,? First Victim? is done with a violin bow. I just wanted to make the songs pretty long and pretty intense and really have a lot of information in there. I also did a cover of ?Welcome To The Jungle", which is really close to my heart. That is kind of what really made me want to move to California was that video. When I saw it, I said this is definitely what I am going to do. It has got a lot of meaning to it. On ?Young Thing", I just wanted to do a little bit of (country) western on there to mix it up a bit. KNAC.COM: I loved how you revamped ?Welcome To The Jungle?. Actually your guitar parts scream out Axl's lyrics in such a way that it is really unique. JOHN 5: I just wanted to just do his vocals, as close as possible. Even with the little phrases that he does. It came out really good, I am really proud of it. Title: Re: John 5 covers "Welcome To The Jungle" Post by: redx on April 21, 2007, 09:28:12 AM Hearing John5 play Welcome to the Jungle is so weird. The way he makes the guitar replace the vocals is good.
I'd like to see Buckerhead release his take on some guns songs. He does a great intro to Welcome to the Jungle. Title: Re: John 5 covers "Welcome To The Jungle" Post by: Robman? on April 21, 2007, 09:50:39 AM you can hear the track online here: http://www.goear.com/listen.php?v=2c8d539 thanks for uploading that, I never took the time to listen to it before. Great take on the song, I like the fact that he played the vocal part, rather than getting a crappy sound alike to do it.
