Title: GNR vs. Covers Post by: acompleteunknown on April 17, 2007, 02:47:39 PM Here's an interesting site that pits original versions of songs versus their covers and the public votes.
Here are some of the GNR entries... GNR v. Paul McCartney http://www.cover-vs-original.com/song-74.html GNR vs. Bob Dylan http://www.cover-vs-original.com/knockin-on-heavens-door/guns-n-roses-bob-dylan.html GNR vs. The Stones http://www.cover-vs-original.com/song-107.html GNR vs. Sheryl Crow http://www.cover-vs-original.com/song-34.html GNR vs. Nazareth http://www.cover-vs-original.com/song-159.html Title: Re: GNR vs. Covers Post by: CheapJon on April 17, 2007, 02:52:17 PM GNR vs.? Say what? /jarmo for the record i was kidding... honestly! im not that ignorant! Title: Re: GNR vs. Covers Post by: Africa on April 17, 2007, 03:03:17 PM Bob Dylan = timeless music.
Ironically, the way KOHD is played now by GN'R is closer to the original than how Dylan plays it now. :hihi: Title: Re: GNR vs. Covers Post by: GunsNCrowes on April 17, 2007, 03:19:56 PM Interesting site...there are sooo many pop songs from the last 30 years that are covers most don't even know about.
While on the subject of covers, I've said it before and I'll say it again - "HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN" by The Animals would be killer. Think of the Dizzy/Pitman interaction on that organ part! (which to me sounds like it was written by the devil himself!) I really think this would be in everyone's wheelhouse, esp. Axl. Title: Re: GNR vs. Covers Post by: Skunk on April 18, 2007, 02:02:22 AM isnt SCOM a cover of a sheryl crow song tho? Say what? /jarmo  Look how lopsided that particular vote is, as of now GNR has 82.1% of the vote. When the Sheryl Crow version was new i kept hearing it on the radio and wondering WHY they would play it when they could just as easily play the original GNR version. I can't remember ever hearing anyone say her version was better. GNR's version has always worked as a great crowd pleaser live but come on. UYI version of it in average enviroment is just bloated crap.

Title: Re: GNR vs. Covers Post by: kingcanute on April 18, 2007, 09:15:52 PM KOHD has never been among my fav GNR songs...
Out of the songs mentioned here I'd say Live and let die and Hair of the dog are the only covers better than the original. GNR have done _lots_ of covers through the years and if they put all of them on albums it would be too much but there are a few unreleased ones that I think are really really cool. The early versions of Heartbreak hotel and Jumpin' Jack Flash are both fantastic and should have been recorded properly. Down on the farm is another favourite but one of the few I've never heard the original so kinda difficult to judge. Can't say I expect the original to be better though. Title: Re: GNR vs. Covers Post by: freedom78 on April 19, 2007, 02:43:32 PM I voted, but I certainly didn't blindly give GNR my vote on every one.
I picked the Nazareth version of "Hair of the Dog" and the Stones version of "Sympathy for the Devil." I voted for Nazareth because I think the GNR cover is really pretty faithful to the original. And, since Axl and Dan McCafferty have a VERY similar vocal style, the songs come across very similarly. The Stones version of Sympathy just has more character, IMO. That said, who the fuck are the 16% that voted FOR Sheryl Crow? :puke: Title: Re: GNR vs. Covers Post by: freedom78 on April 19, 2007, 02:45:24 PM GNR have done _lots_ of covers through the years and if they put all of them on albums it would be too much but there are a few unreleased ones that I think are really really cool. The live covers of the Stones are always very good, too, and it's obvious that GNR really loved playing Stones songs. Dead Flowers (which is also covered on a Gilby's "Pawnshop Guitars" album) is a good live cover, and I also enjoy listening to the guest spot that Axl and Izzy did with the Stones for Salt of the Earth. Listen to Slash's solos though : ok: They're why I'd give GnR the vote on that one. |
