no link to megaupload to avoid leaks; however to answer your question ;,rock in rio has always been my favorite; to a point where I bet the album version wont be as good for me. (cause I heard the leak and if it sounds anything like that demo, Ill cry).

Well...

RIRIII from 2001 will always be a favorite of mine. The performance is good, but the whole setting - and emotional aura, as well as Axl's spoken intro as he's clearly overwhelmed by the response to their comeback - is so amazing.

Also loved the be-bop beat for the medley.. that Axl "sways" to in the background when he straps on a guitar. The song has been missing that since.

But... as for pure performance, it has to be Budapest 2006.

Then show was brilliant and there are many highlights but Madagascar clearly hasn't been performed with this much passion and grit before or since.

But there are many good live versions out there.

I've just listen to it and indeed, the last verse is sung differently and that's what make the song ending less boring. but what I don't like in 2006 is the solo, much less emotional that 2001/2002 but the good point for 2006 performances is the rythm guitar, that was put forward more than 01/02.

2001 - 2002 : Rock in Rio (Amazing Solo, First time played, Axl stage move, etc)
2006: Kroq (Amazing Solo and lead guitar by Richard, very good perfomance from Axl and the band - Last Brain show)

=> the best one in 2006

I would say KROQ Inland Invasion.

Alright, here's my Best Live Madagascar opinion:  Combine these 3 versions.

Lead-in translated by Beta at Rio III where Axl speaks to the huuuge crowd,
Boston '02 (I was there!!!!!!) hairs standing on the back of my neck.
Outro. from Budapest '06 (he does something different at the end of the song.  there's a beautiful high note hit that he doesn't do in any other version I've heard)

Osaka 2002. You've got to go with something from 2002 because you still have Buckets guitar solo, and Axl's high pitched voice suits the song better.

Definitely. Wasn't the best overall GN'R performance, but the Axl vocals combined with Fortus' rhythm bit...absolutely immense. And the scream at the end into Paradise City...best one I've heard by a mile.

Boston 12/2/02 and 11/8/06. Axl was at his best at them shows.  :beer:

Instrumentally, the 2002 VMA'S. WITHOUT QUESTION!....Vocally, I like the WAY he sang the song at the 2002 VMA'S, but not really the sound of his vocals. I have a pretty good idea of how it will sound on the record. In between his 2002 and 2006 voice.

Rio '01 because of how emotional it was.
VMA's because of the roaring guitars and Axl's vocals.
Budapest because of the outro.

Other notables would be Leeds, Osaka, and Pukkelpop. As a matter of fact, they tore it up in every concert in all of those '02 shows pre-VMA's. I'm not really a fan of how the song sounded during the US '02 tour. The guitars were WAY to "clean" and shrill...

Wooody, I respect your posts, but are you serious?  Boston's 12-02-02 Madagascar is almost flawless in my eyes.  It was a truly awesome live performance.  The Blues version from that show is also on my all-time favorite live performances list.  Are you sure you aren't thinking of another show?   ???

To everyone who's PM'ed me regarding the Budapest version.

Sorry i haven't had time to answer, I'm pulling out our kitchen and knocked down the wall with my internet connection. So I'm on wireless from time to time only.

Anyway.. it's worth seeking out. In fact, the whole show.

The band went on at 23:31 as the place was about to implode and some had left. Boos all around. We were sitting down there getting scared actually.

The ointro started and got played three times! More boos.

Then...  Axl and the band went on (to thunderous applause) and put on a show for the ages.

I loved the intro for Rio III, But hated the performance. I'm still pissed that Rock AM wasn't broadcasted.

I absolutely love the VMA's.  I was with my friend who used to be a GNR fan and he said, if Chinese Democracy is anything like this, bring it on.

But He did call Fortus gay for his NU Metal Guitar Humping move, ha.
 
At first I hated rhasp on maddy, but its grown on me.  I love the high pitch back up vocals though. 

Rio 2001 is my favorite above all live performances and the studio demo.

Well not counting the VMA's performance since it wasn't a full version, I think the best version is from Boston 2002.
