I like the guitar. ?THe song structure is okay. ?I think he tells the guys to play something that might sound like Slash. ?Cause it is not really there styles. ?I think it is assumed to emulate a GNR sound, you have to play stuff that might sound like something Slash might to cause it is so important. ?I like the background vocals around 3 and a half minutes in. ?I like the Axl vocals towards the end of the song. ?I like the jam out. ?I like the wah solo, again, Slash style. ?I just don't understand what is up with the leaks. ?Goddamn, a very Slashesque solo towards the end. ?This is great shit towards the end of the song. ?Song kind of reminds me of Breakdown, but with a better ending!

I don't think this is the final cut for the vocals on it though...or who knows, it's very hard to tell before it's been properly produced, mixed and all that jazz!

Like someone else has already said the shit has hit the fan!!!! ?This obviously sounds like a demo to me as well. The production isn't nearly good enough to be album quality in my opinion. ?The song sounds like a song that could possibly end an album. Axl's voice sounds great but the music.... I don't know. Seems to be way too much going on. Too cluttered. I'm excited but I'll keep it i check and try and give an honest rateing. I'll give it a 6/10. Obviously I'm gonna be way in the minority in that opinion.

Maybe it's just me but every song we have heard leaked so far has had a shitty first minute or 2 and ended strong. This song could be a classic with an improved intro.

I'm a 30something year old man.  I cried in 1991 when I heard Estranged live at Alpine Valley the opeing night of the Illusions tour (girlfriend thought I was nuts)

I cried when I heard The blues live in Vegas at the HOB (my cousin thought I was nuts)

I cried tonight when I heard this because it validates everything I feel about the legendary superstar that is Axl Rose (my wife thinks I am nuts)

Some people won't get the emotion, but I have been a fan since 1986....every time I think the well runs dry, Axl finds a way to replenish it.

I just saw a news bit on the modern version of payola (maybe misspelled it) and I think it's great that however the gnr camp goes about it, whether stations are playing the leaks to piss of Axl or out of pure interest, that the songs are being played and there is no label dictating to the stations what and what not to play. ?Can't wait to find the longer version of better.

TWAT Judgement: It has MAJOR potential. I love the intro. Has a Cure vibe to it. The rest of the song has a Queensryche 'Empire' era vibe to it. I was expecting that type of shit. Glad he's not disappointing me. The guitars are great also. Axl sounds good. We need to hear the final version though.

The only thing I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!! I can't believe the songs I have heard so far. It's incredible!!! Why did Axl wait 10 years? These songs are awesome. It sounds like Queensryhe because Queensryche tried to sound like Pink Floyd. This song definately has a floyd feel with a little blues and a little GNR. Fucking Fantastic. First I thought it couldn't get better than The Blues. Then I was convinced it couldn't get better than "Better" Now I have to say TWAT is WOWWWWWWWWWW. That should probably tell us something about the disfunctionality of Axl and the situation that he walked away from such strong material. He must have been totally miserable to pick up and walk away knowing that the material was their for a great album.

I agreed with you when I first heard TWAT that it wasn't as good as IRS and Better, but after I listened to it over and over I find it to be pretty amazing, espechally at the end. ?I can't say if I like it better than IRS or not, and I haven't heard all of Better so I don't want to make judgement there, but IMO all 3 tracks are great and have my hopes up higher for CD than ever before.

I wasnt that impressed with TWAT in the same way I wasn't that impressed with IRS.

Its because they both sound like demos.. and you can tell alot of things still need to be fixed.

Axls voice in TWAT is very backround. I like it.. especally the keyboard at the start.. but i'll reserve my final opinion for the studio.

I agree. As I mentioned earlier, it really starts out like a song from The Cure, and then explodes into a Queensryche style epic. To me it really sounds like something that band would have LOVED to put on their Empire cd. The final version of this should be amazing.

These are definitely not finished.  I think IRS and Better might be close to finished, but TWAT is far from finished.  If you guy's love the band, I would not send TWAT to the radio--it's not ready and definitely not the introduction to the new band, that Axl or the label wants.  Really, Axl cannot be happy that this very personal song might be played to millions when it is not even close to the finished product, esp. TWAT.

I think TWAT is pretty far along. IRS really sounded like a demo, lots of dead air and a bad mix. Better is definately close to perfection.

Yeah, the song seems to go in different directions at once, and while most bands have trouble pulling that off, Axl/GNR are masters at doing that. the orchestra is cool. I have always looked forward to hearing those parts on CD.

This is off topic, but the coolest thing about all this(besides the music) is that the entire fanbase seems to be united. It was fractured, and there were alot of vendettas,grudges,etc. among quite a few members here. Really, we are here for one reason: Because we are fans of GNR. So once the music starts then all the other things fall to the side.  I didn't blink an eye to sends links because I would hope the same in return if I asked, even if I didn't get along with the person on other subjects.

I remember hearing/reading a quote from Gilby (I think) talking about the guitars Slash did on Estranged saying how they're amazing and "they're unlike anything that's ever been done before" (I believe that was the exact quote) and listening to TWAT over and over I get that same feeling from the main guitars during the verses.  It's amazing, it's like one long bluesy solo.  I really wish I could turn off the vocals because IMO the guitars to TWAT are some of the best in ANY Gn'R song and that's saying a hell of a lot because I love Slash just as much as anyone here...  TWAT is really amazing.

Everything in this song seems so perfect, the guitars, Axl's voice, the lyrics, the ending chanty type quire is amazing, the keys, the orch., the synth.  Wow.. I this song has grown on me so freaking much during the last 2 hours it's amazing.  A true classic, I can't wait for the stuido version. :love:

No one on the GNR message boards cares, nor acknowledges the time and money to make the album.

People on the outside without the hardcore obsession will weigh the music against that standard, so I am not the only one who bring up the years and time issue.

People expect songs of this quality if not better given the circumstances. Dance around it as you wish, but that is a fact of life when dealing with GNR.

The songs we have heard are anywhere from average to outstanding. But as a long-time ?GNR fan from 87 told me earlier when we were talking about the songs, "They are no better than NR or Estranged were, and I didn't have to wait almost 15 years to hear them."

That is the rational most people apply to GNR. Not the myopic existance many of pretend exists.

I want them to be huge again, but to pretend that the years, money and rotating band members spent making this album won't be relavent in determining their commercial and critical success is being terribly naive.

Without reading them yet you know that every review of the album will be judged against the time, money and back catalog. So I would be more concerned about how those ultimately stack up against those than how GNR stacks up against the Slipknots and Nickelback's of the world in terms of quality of music.

Just got home from work well 2hrs ago.lol  And got a email from a friend who snet me the links to TWAT and Better longer version, as did a buddy on MSN. RIght now all m listened to the ast 2 hrs is from IRS BETTER and TWAT.

THis is simply amazing. On topic, Twat has so many elements, "complex". BUt it all meshes so well. The feeling running through me listening to this with tears burning behind my eyes. Its so incredible, and I was pondering the other day that in 2007 I will have been a hard core GNR fan for 20, been there thru all the fuckin shit!

All I can say is CD needs to be fast tracked , for release , cause the record comp should relise as if they dont already what we all know GNR WILL BE HUGE AGAIN!!!!

Now, I've already heard the song 4 times in a row. It's good, Not a amazing, or earth-shattering, but it makes me want to hear more.

I kinda have the same feelings with the three leaked songs. I like them all, but I'm not completely into the songs yet. Doesn't any of you feel the chorus on the three songs don't level up with the verses? I think the verse part of the songs are much better than the chorus, specially in Better and TWAT. When I played those songs, the first thing that came to my mind was, "boy, this is gonna be huge, the verse is superb", but then the chorus kicks in and it's not just as good. Maybe it's just me, but so far the choruses have let me down a bit.

Other than that, the songs are great. I'm excited about the new songs, can't wait to get an announcement soon.

Yeah, you make good points. Nothing we've heard is "earth shattering". But the Big Guns haven't been unleashed yet, so I'm sure the earth can still be shattered. As far as all the lyrics go, IRS is the weakest of the three. I like the paranoid vibe of the song, but he repeats himself way too many times. How many fucking times is he gonna call the IRS? :hihi: Lyrics need an overhaul, or he should just scrap it. Put that BH solo on another song.

TWAT seems to have a lot of Tommy Stinson going on. At least I went "Village Gorilla Head" in my head after a couple of listens. Took a while to sink in, but it's absoulutely a great song, great melancholy mood to it.

TWAT starts off alright, the intro, verse are cool......that chorus or whatever part ("wrong time for you, wrong time for me, wrong time for everyone") is kinda weird and throws me off, but from midway on, the song is AWESOME.......reminds me of the outro to LOCOMOTIVE...long, emotional, and slamming!!!

Song gets better in the second half.  The solos are good, but seems to be lacking something.  Like there is no signature to them.  I think the final mix of this song is going to be amazing.

I would prefer Axl to be singing it in more of his "full on" voice rather than his lower tone... but perhaps in a way the natural sound convey's the lyrics more? Awesome trac though. All of these are such massive growers.

I have to agree..this song is solid, and I am relieved by the sound...different from GNR material from the past...but that's what GNR is all about.  I esp like the 2nd half of the song--very beautiful. I can only hope that this means the release is in the near future!!!

Which version of TWAT do you think will be on Chinese Democracy?  The original 6:01 version or the 6:43 extended version??  I think both are great and that Axl can't go wrong either way.

My observations on all 3-

I think they all sound pretty good.  Better is best, TWAT second, IRS third (IMO, based on what I've heard so far).

I think the choruses on IRS and TWAT are subpar, but I still think we're listening to rough cuts.  In fact, on IRS and TWAT, I think these might be scratch vocals.  I can't help but notice that Axl is spending a whole lot of time WAY UP in the upper register of his voice, especially on Better and TWAT.    Has anyone noticed that there was a similar quality to his voice on that shitty old demo of  'Just Another Sunday' as in the very beginning of IRS?   Hoping they get that patched up before the final master.

I also hope Axl is doing some serious cardio getting ready for the tour.  These songs are gonna be a real bastard to sing live three or four times a week.

Finally, here I've been waiting however long to hear Axl on something knew, and yet I think the best parts of all three songs are the musicians in this new band.  These guys truly rock.

not only that, but I kinda get a Black album feel from all these songs. maybe it's the production or arrangements or something cos it's not similar music-wise, hehe.

This song is amazing. The ending is really epic. Kinda reminds me of the end of estranged in a way. I cant say the first couple of 'chorus' type parts ('it was long time with you, it was a long time with me') are as strong as the rest but it really is gonna be amazing to hear this as the finished product.

I liked this song right away, but it gets better the more you listen to it. There are subtle things going on. It's not instantly assessable IMHO, but it is a very strong track that will sure be among Axl's great compositions, if it is ever officially released.

in the demo the chorus of twat is a bit sucky sucky......after that it's great!! It would be cool if the intro was way longer. The piano thing with the orchestra beginning is way too short and overall the orchestra needs to be louder. Sometimes the solo's following the vocal lines are a bit too much and long. That's what annoyed me a bit on the chorus. But I'm not complaining at all. This one is just a demo, it will be even better and better on studio quality, the song has November Rain / Estranged potentional!! ?:beer:

Yes, I do. I like great guitar music.

I don't say it's a bad song, but I expected more. When I heard the song's title years ago, I had big expectations. I don't know why. As years went by I lost almost all my interest in Axl's project. This week it has changed. I liked the good quality IRS, and found pleasure in Better. And then the TWAT leak... but this song is not for me. I have no problem with the first part, I liked The Fragile, and this song could have been on that album. It seems that everyone likes the second part, but me. (However the Pink Floyd-ending is good). I don't like the guitars. Don't get me wrong, I think BH had amazing moments in IRS, but this song sounds like some guys trying to sound like Slash. But they aren't Slash, so it turns out bad. I'd rate this song 6/10.

I think the official version will be way better. I think there is a lot going on that is lost in the mix.

Can anyone else here picture a kick-ass music video for TWAT?  I swear to god, it would kick ass.  A happy Axl walking into the house feeling great with a gift bag or somethin', only to find her not waiting there for him...broken glass and cigarettes...and you slowly see the emotion sinking into anger, reminiscing over beautiful memories...despair...yet finishing with matter of fact realization it just wasn't meant to be...and that can be good.

The second part is explosive. However I agree, something is wrong bith Buckethead's solo. it lacks feeling. Firstly some parts of his outro solo are too fast and don't fit with the other elements, secondly He tries to sound like Slash but fails. There's just ONE Slash, and Buckethead is far, far away from him. I'd like the Buckethead's stuff to be erased and replaced by Robin or Richard.

I think the first solo (probably robin) sounds great. Axl sounds exeptional.

Some people get to hear one of the best modern rock songs of the last years and all you can do is whine about how Slash is not playing guitar on it?

TWAT is so fucking huge I think most people have no idea yet how huge it really is. This song is a monster! We have to wait until we can hear the final version, but if you don't hear that potential then I don't know.

The atmosphere of that song is amazing.

It sounds like a classic soundtrack or James Bond anthem compiled with Garbage's "You Look So Fine" layered over a Led Zeppelin arrangement and then remixed by Trent Reznor. The guitars are fucking insane and how the whole song builds and flows is fantastic.

That's a standard C&D, there won't be any lawsuit so long as the guy removes the link. I'm sure a bunch of these will go out to various forums hosting the song, but it's too late anyhow. It's a wonder lawyers even get paid. They're utterly useless.

I would like to add that all songs (except THE BLUES) left me kinda cold because they were good and well done but somehow not speaking ?to me.

I think this is more excessible to all the die hard GNR fans its more of a illusions style song.  Very good song I like  it better then IRS but Better is my favorite so far.  His vocals are not the most outstanding on TWAT but I believe they will be on the final version.

There're a few bits I don't like about this demo (like a few secs of loose guitar solo)  but that's kinda cool.

Every time I listen to it, I'm amazed. Such an honest, difficult song. Love Axl's delivery and it's guitar work is something to behold. The only slight thing I don't care a whole lot about is the chorus "it was a long time for you, it was a long time for me, etc.". After that line where Axl says "when I thought I'd heard it all" and everything stops for a second, you expect it to just crush you, but it's a bit anti-climatic. Still an amazing piece of work. Could end up being regarded as one of Axl's possible masterpieces...

That's actually one of my favorite parts, fits in perfectly and gives the song a cooler edge. It sounds a bit like Jane's Addiction.

Especially the 2:36 solo,  :o  :drool:

From what I read about slash I think he actually came from a decent family and was in school and all that before he started the music thing...

and each verse ends with - 'if there's nothing I can gain from this, or anything at all'  'something I can make of this or anything at all', - then he goes into a lesson he learned about the devil liking them and stuff like that... I don't think it's about any one specific person...just a collection of similar experiences from a time period..

Just sounds like a more complete song than IRS and Better do, like it took more thought and time to compose. So far, so good on these demos that have been leaked. I think Chinese Democracy is/has definitely been moving in the right direction if the songs are all like these.

Maybe the fact that it is a demo and it isn't mixed probably plays a part, but the beginning just seems mediocre to me.  The ending sort of has a chaotic November Rain vibe to it that I really like.

CD has been in the making since 1997. What VR did  in a couple months is irrelevant. Going by the VR timetable, Axl should have had a 'Slither' type hit on MTV back in late 1997.

Listened to it today, it has grown on me, this song is so HUUUUUGE.
I love it when Axl sings "To those malnegotiations, to simulate a call" and the guitar playing along the notes.
Less synth sounds and a little louder orchestration and it's perfect.
The lenght is not radio friendly though, and I hate radio-edited-songs.

To compare a demo with led zeppelin isn't ok. Led Zeppelin has done so many great songs as has GNR.

Very impressed I must say. Incredible vocals and a nice overall sound, VERY catchy, the guitar complements the track and does not overpower it. I think everything is amalgamated excellently.

I'm actually surprised the reaction to this song on the average has been anything less than HOLY SHIT!!!
I got chills when I first listened to TWAT. I read someone describe the last half as '4 minutes of wigging out' and while I agree, I do so in a positive light.

The chorus is really the only part of the song that, to me, doesn't fit very well. However, the pay off of this song is certainly the last half of it. Crazy Fn' guitars, haunting background vocals (I would do anything for you), building upon one another into an emotional mess. Very, very powerful IMO.

It's an amazing song.? There isn't anyone else out there right now putting out songs with shredding guitars and vocals that take the best of both traditional and modern rock.? Not anyone good, anyway.

In fact, I would say TWAT is better than November Rain, and Estranged put together.

I thought I was the only one who didn't like the chorus, the one at 0:55 seconds.... it's messy, the guitars, vocals, I dont know what to make of it. The rest of the song is fucking awesome!!!! "T.W.A.T." is my favorite of the three new songs. In fact, it's probably my favorite of all the '99-present songs. It isn't as instantly catchy as "IRS" or "Better", but it definitely grows on you. My all-time favorite song is "Coma", so that sort of thing obviously appeals to me. And I'm sure that I'll like it that much more when I hear the studio version.

One thing I've read a few times on here is that "IRS" is an average song with the exception of Buckethead's solo. I don't really agree with that. I think that the highlight of both "IRS" and "Better" are the vocal melodies, and if anything, the solos haven't stood out to me. With "T.W.A.T." on the other hand, I think that Buckethead's long solo is amazing. That's not to say that it's the highlight of the song or that it "makes the song", because I feel that Axl completely matches Buckethead. It's an all-around homerun.

Since I've had a chance to listen to all three songs properly by now, I'll say that "T.W.A.T." is my favorite, followed by "Better", followed by "IRS", with the last two being interchangeable.

Well, after listening to it... I can say that... well we can't judge Better in this because it's just a clip where these are the full songs or demos....

Out of TWAT and IRS... I think the more complex song is TWAT.

The best guitar is in TWAT which must have Buckethead's parts in it in the end. It sounds so fresh... Axl Rose still has it. I'm really looking forward to this album... what is the hold up?

I have to agree. This song is amazing. By far the best song they have put out yet. The guitar and flow of this song is brillant. It is almost like Estranged on steroids. The true GNR sounds we all yearn for. If Axl is going to put out music like this I commend him for doing his own thing because he will leave the rest of the folks in the dust.

i think that in general with the newest songs is the only letdown that it's not some guitar rif just turning on the minute it starts.. Both better and twat are not my type of starts but both songs are good..

That has all the qualities of a Robin Finck Special: the twitchy bends and the sort of nervous sounding hammer-ons he seems to do a lot of. I wish I could get into his style more, my biggest hope is that whoever is producing this album is really getting to lay back more.

I like the start of both songs. They're different. If anything, the beginning of "IRS" doesn't do much for me. It's cool when it starts rocking out though.

Good observation and point, Mike.  That does stand in stark contrast to the old material where you'd often have a guitar riff kicking off the song.  Personally, I hope there are some of those on the new album.

With regards to the drums, I think these are 'demo' drums - just a basic beat to play the songs to.

I'm pretty sure these are not the finished drums.

The same can possibly be said for the guitar solos. Although, I hope the final Bucket solo is kept as it is because it rocks very hard.

I can't handle the chorus, it sounds very messy, but it is only a demo so we shall see...That piano part is damn catchy though.

I think Axl deserves more credit for his lyrics, he's a genius, and both Better and TWAT are further testament to his ability.

The production seems off-i know its likely not the finished product, but musically TWAT does very little for me. Axl's lyrics arent amazing but his voice is strong.

I notice that people keep going on about the chorus being bad, but to me this song doesn't really have a proper chorus part, but then neither did Estranged, and that didn't stop Estranged form being a great song.

BH was added to the 2nd version that is longer. Check out the solo from the 5 min mark on, its different. There is no shredding on the short one. You can tell its different styles. I think the shorter version of TWAT is from 99 before BH came into the band. Which means is Paul and not Richard on guiatar.

I love the guitars around the 2:40 mark, right after Axl says "there was a tiiiimmmmeeee".....very haunting...very "estranged"-esque.

Killer tune.  Easily my favorite.

Wowsers. I was blown away by IRS and Better on the first listen, didn't really like There Was a Time that much on the first couple of tries.

However, it gets better each time I listen to it, it's really growing on me. I find this happens with the great songs, they don't hit you right away or aren't as catchy, but much deeper. It definitely feels a bit "older" than the others, like a song we could've seen on the follow-up album to UYI in the 90's.

There are some things that need to be tightened up, mix altered, vocals a bit louder. I can see the final version of this song being on par with the very best songs GNR ever put out.

While listening to T.W.A.T - the ?dink - dink - dink? sounds that plays during the beginning of the song kept on reminding me of another track. I couldn?t for the life of me think what track. I played Buckethead?s new album ?Enter the Chicken? last night and when track 4 - ?Three Fingers? began to play it hit me, the has a very similar ?dink - dink - dink? sounding beat at the start too. Not  that I am trying to imply anything.

Souns very late 90's/millenium. I doubt this demo (as we heard it) is fresher than 2002.

My opinion is close to yours. I think TWAT is too long, simply getting boring after 3 minutes (the ending is good again). BTW I have the same problem with Madagascar. Axl shines in the new songs, but the band... they have moments, but the music isN1t anything special. Is there a good riff anywhere? IRS has some good guitar works, but you can't find a memorable riff... This band is simply about Axl, the music is only a tool to help him build up the vocals. It's not a bad thing since Axl is great, but GN'R had been known for the great music, too.

keep in mind these are demo's, guitar parts are hard to hear on them. The studio versions will be brilliant I think. TWAT is perhaps a bit too long yes, but you can always listen to the shorter version then without Bucket. I think Bucket parts are gone ever since he left. These demo's are old. Perhaps Richard layed down new solo's instead of Bucket's parts. Richard is more then capable to do so (his outro on The Blues is great)

This is one of those multi-layer tunes Tommy mentioned in one of his interviews: lots of guitars, strings, some synths, great backing vocals, a piano, axl sounds awesome...

I just miss the bass (not only on this one but in all these newest tracks). Can't hear it at all. The song is so good that I even forget about the drums, which I still think is the weakest part of all the new songs (I really don't think Brain fits GNR right).

This tune will really kick ass when/if they play it live!

The mix is too muddled for me to really gauge whether I like it.
I'm so used to the incredible production on past GnR songs, it's hard to listen to the demos that have been leaked.
I have faith that the final versions will sound amazing, and possibly, quite different than these tracks.

I can't remember the songs that well.  Its like I can't remember a true riff.  I go to my guitar and I can't think of anything really that cool to learn from any of the songs so far.  I think I am already burnt out on them.  I like IRS, Twat, and Better, but, the lead guitar melody is just not catching me at all.  Am I the only one?  I like the songs, but they just aren't sticking in my brain like I thought. Other then Ax's voice, there isn't much to take away from these.

They are good, but, jeez, I just don't know.  Something is just missing.  Too robotic.  Like pink floyd, but not all the way.  I just can't figure it out.  He is going to struggle really bad with this song live.  It sounds very demanding vocally.  I like the wah guitar, very simple, but good.  I hear the playing, it is good, but sounds underinspired or something.  Sounds like Tom morello at times.  WHere as IRS sounds like straight up Zakk Wylde.

This is my favourite new song, no question.  The first of these new songs that I didn't need to let "settle in", it hit me right over the head, and I've only listened to it over crappy speakers so far, I need to get it on my ipod.

I did not like any of the 3 new  songs  at  all at first listen, but after a few listens  TWAT is the best of the 3, and is not bad. I haven't listened to any of the leaked songs either. It's tough, but I figure that I want my first experience of them to be in their final cd version. However, that being said, I am aware that the release of the cd could still be years away. I mean I wasn't going to listen to Madagascar, The Blues etc. at first because of the same reason and its been 5 years since they surfaced, so I'm glad I didn't hold off listening to them.

I figure that the announcement of a release date for the cd should be coming in the next couple of weeks if the record is going to come out this year, so I figure I'll hold off on listening to them for a couple more weeks, but I think if we get into March and we have heard nothing about a release date, I'm going to give in and listen to all the leaks.

I'm sick of all of those songs now. The Blues is still my all time fav though.

Yes they are. Listen to the "sleeping in another woman's bed" part and it's obvious. It fits the song and Axl's stretchy delivery nicely.

Well, being an unfinished product, it is bound to get only better not worse from the demo stage. And as the most obvious shortcomings of the track are technical instead of artistic, I'd say it is really stupid to bash it like that.

Most of all, no it isn't hard to tell whether it's a muddy demo or not. That's the dumbest line in the whole review. While the world is full of polished turds on the charts, this asshole bashes an obviously great but unfinished song because... IT'S UNFINISHED!

In addition, the rest of the article reads like: "What is Axl Rose thinking? Is he trying to make a great song like Estranged? Sure sounds like it! What a moron!" I just don't get it? All his examples are pretty good music on their own (AFAIK/IMO) and he bashes TWAT for sounding like a mix of them. I'm baffled.

My personal opinion of TWAT is that it could be a lot better if it had a better beat to go with it or should I say more of a beat. This song isn't even completely there but it needs some more work done on it, if it hasn't been done already.

I wouldn't take Pitchfork too seriously. They are the epitome of emo-rock elitism. The only time they give a good review is if it's a band no one has ever heard of, because it makes them look more scenester fabulous. "Oh I liked them BEFORE they got big...now they suck!"

Guys, that was pretty accurate. He seems like he wants to like it but it is kind of a mess. Especially the first part with the "Gorillaz" drum beats and that essentially irritating guitar tone. Some clean power chords, real drums and an increase of the strings in the mix would compliment Axl's vocal well. The lyrics in the first part are great. The guy has obviously followed Gnr in the press if he remembers a Rolling Stone article from 1999! The grandeur and potential are there-let's just pray this wasn't a final mix-would not bode well for the album.

I think TWAT just might be my favorite track that's leaked so far.  I liked the solo; it's great.  Executed awesomely.  I think my favorite part has to be when Axl sings "Lonely teardrops, ooh, are calling youuu."  The way he sings it is great.  I'm really happy this is only the demo song, because it can only get better.  ;D

In it's final state it will be an amazing track, but for now, to the casual listener I can hear why it might sound like a disjointed mess. These things aren't meant for public consumption, you know? They are probably tracked into a computer, moved around in pro tools, etc. It's like a rough reference for a producer to pick through. If you have an ear for music you can hear the potential in something like this, but the average listener expects pristine studio quality. The TWAT demo isn't it.

It's not crystal clear, but it does sound good enough to listen to. It sounds like a good quality demo that has been compressed a bit in sound quality.

don't get dissapointed after hearing it the first time. it's going to take a few more listens,and after that you won't be able to stop listening to that song. i'm still going crazy everytime i hear it. the last three mins of that song are the best thing i hear in music for 10 years.. incredible.. and bucketheads solo is just godlike...so emotional

D should have just got the links from someone before reading all the 'its better than NR-Estranged, in fact its the best song ever!!' comments. It doesn't hold up to that standard. You cant call a demo better than a polished work of material that took years and hard work to make it so and call yourself unbiased. Sure, TWAT has potential. But you cant hold it up to grade A quality tracks from previous albums.

P.S. This is just an observation on general comments I've seen about the song. Not really meant as a jibe against you, Axl4prez. :peace:

I don't think anyone has said it's better than those songs, but it is certainly up there with them.
I think everyone knows that this is only a demo, but damn, if this song is that good in demo form, the complete version will be up there with the aforementioned GN'R classics.

Everyone is just going crazy over this guitar playing (that sounds kind of like the outro to Novemeber Rain) is getting annoying.  First of all, you don't need bucket to play that.  It is not that hard.  Hell, Slash could play that very, very easy.  Acutually the last 4 seconds of the solo is fast.  But anyway, the more I listen to this song, the less I like it.  It is good.  Not as good as Breakdown.  Not as good as Estranged.  Not as good as NR. Hell, I think You Got No Right from VR is better.  I know everyone talks about the "soul," or "emotion" this song has.  I mean, Smashing Pumpkins did this back in the mid 90's with Simease Dream.  Nothing new hear.  Not enough guitar. Not riff based enough.  Again, I like the song, but musically it does nothing for me.  At times the lyrics are awesome.  At other times kind of lame and repetitive like "Fall to Peices" can be.  Right now I can name songs by focking Silvertide that are better then this new GNR stuff.  I don't know.  I just don't know.  I like some of this, but, then again, in the big picture, TWAT will not stand the test of time to me. I all are just excited cause it is new and because it is Axl.  This song may be really buthered when he tries to sing it live.  Could be bad.  Raspy won't work on this type of song.  I hope I am wrong.  But there is No Rock to Axl's Roll.

In all honesty, I don't agree with you at all.

I've listened to the 3 new demos that have popped up quite allot over the last week, and while IRS and Better have started to wear off on me, TWAT still sounds great.
I know music is subjective to the listener and all, but I still really think it's a great song, and I think the music and vocals are good too. Mind you this IS only a demo, so there is room for improvement, but I already see it as a classic.

metallex, i too like the song. I just don't know if we are blinded by the light.  It is just so 70's sounding but with modern beats.  I do like it, i really do.  Just don't know if it is NR legendary, or more like yesterdays.  Yesterdays was a hit, but no classic.  I don't know, I hope I am wrong.  If it just had a stonger riff or solo it would be better, that is all.  Very elton johnish.

I think it may be too "smart," "complex", and "poetic" for the average fan of music to understand.  Kind of like Snakepit one that was critically acclaimed but didn't take off on the charts or anything.  not saying Snakepit is as good as this, just saying sometimes it is more then just great music.

To me the riff is in the piano melody, and the guitar parts are simply complimentimg or accenting that. The guitar solo is simple in parts too, but sometimes the simplest melodies work best.

Got a listen to this one also last night. One thing I have to say it was one I knew immediatly I needed to hear a bunch of times, has so many layers and intricate things happening. If I wanst a guns fan or maybe just a causal listener of music, I might easily toss it off. To me this isnt near single kinda product.

BUt I do think if this were to be on the album, and polished up, it could potentially become one of the most beloved GNR tunes by people who really love this band as I do.

Incredible song.  I really hope both this and Madagascar make the final album.  The first time I heard both of these songs I got chills.  TWAT is incredibly moody and really captures that classic GNR sound for me while still managing to remain relevant twenty years since that sound dominated the airwaves.

They need to change the Buckethead outro solo, it doesn't fit in with the rest of the song.

Well, after a solid however long it's been of listening to TWAT, I can actually say,

jesus fucking christ.

The novelty of a clean IRS is wearing off (I played the shite version to death...), listening to an incomplete Better is frustrating, because it's so good, but TWAT...

It seriously just gets better. The solo is so full of emotion, so well written and proves a point that went right over Smoking Guns head...

Slash could play it? So fucking what. Well done Slash. That doesn't mean that he could have written it. I'm sorry, but the TWAT solo is better than anything I've heard from Slash in the last...I don't know how many years.

The composition of the last three minutes is insane, and the fact that this is only a demo...........

Guitar solo to me is above average

i dont rank it on par with NR or Estranged.

However, I think with more listens i will truly appreciate it.

Im kinda disappointed in the guitar playin though...

First the song lacks a good intro. The first and second verses are amazing, very UYI era, but the very weak chorus bring the quality of the song down. Also the last 3 minutes are way repetitive. Overall it has a great potential but needs some decent work and changes.

This is without a shadow of a doubt the best of the leaked tracks. How anyone can say there's not enough guitar in this I do not know! Guitar dominates the last couple of minutes of the song and it is some of the most beautiful playing I have heard in years. I'm sorry but I dont think Slash is capable of that sort of playing anymore.

I dont know about the Slash comment, but the rest of your post is dead on.  I love this song.  Classic GNR.

I love new GNR but Slash shits all over that solo.

great thing about Slash's solo's were they took u to a higher place in the song, they broke through that ceiling, they made u pick up a bat and bust your room up.

See I DO feel it in my body, it gives me chills man! And i'm not hating on Slash's previous work with Guns cos we all know how great that is, i'm just saying his more recent stuff hasn't been as great. The only solo's on CB that really hit me were on 'Slither' and 'Loving The Alien'.

You can def compare some guitar parts in TWAT to Estranged (As you ole pal HannaHat did BEFORE all the lousy articles came out doing the same - sorry, shamless plug, but I am proud of myself for that one haha).  I agree with the dudes above...some parts of TWAT make your heart stop, they are very powerful and emotional -- thats the comparison I'm making.  Not comparing Slash to BH or anything dumb like that, comparing the haunting sound of the music, thats all. 

TWAT gets the Estranged comparison right around the 2:35ish as far as i'm concerned....its not speed guitar, just really powerful stuff.

I need to hear this at a higher quality I guess.

Ditto... I feel bad for D not being able to pick up on that vibe.  The Better solos don't do much for me... I'm not even sure if the whole song does anything for me.  TWAT on the other hand was just what I needed to hear to remain interested in the CD.
