It is official according to the Swedish authorities

Parents in Sweden have been given the go ahead to name their seven-month-old baby daughter Metallica.

The girl's parents wanted to give their daughters a name that combined their first names. They picked Metallica and after checking twice with the Swedish tax agency Skatteverket if the name was acceptable, they were told that it shouldn't be a problem, as there was a girl already called Metallica in Sweden.

When they filed Metallica as one of girl's three first names the tax agency objected, claming that it was inappropriate because a it was the name of the band and the fact it was too close to the word "metal".

The parents appealed to the district court, which ruled that the use of the name wouldn't pose any problems for either the girl or anyone she comes into contact with.

One member of the jury objected to the ruling, suggesting the name probably would cause discomfort to the person who bears it, Swedish paper GP reports.

People can stop you from naming your kid what you want?

^ That's what I was wondering....Sweden obvioulsly have certain laws in place. Any Scandinavians around to clarify?

yeah we have some law about that, i think other countries has that as well, don't see many british kids named "monkey"

so now it is axl, iggy and lemmy, but it'll probably be one named axl iggy persson and the other lemmy something persson :hihi: the girls name would be alice, maria or lisa probably, i have already decided that it'll be at least 2 boys then a girl :hihi:

wow, having to get permission over the name you want for your child, and i thought my country was bad....

I think it's so that the child wont get bullied and stuff in school and other places.. the law is probably for the children best not the law enforcers (or what it's called) : ok:

i'd name my kids like Axl, Ace, Izzy or Ozzy, and if its a girl i'm gonna name her Patience ( i thought i was the only one that thought about that one : ok:) Saleen, Michel, or Marie

now i just need to find a women :D :P

Metallica isn't that bad a name actually... but unfortunately because of the band, in school everyone will always sing Metallica songs at her as a form of teasing...

yeah, but i think you could name your kid bon scott in sweden easily, try name your kid metallica in USA, i think they will have a problem with it there too but i dunno, at least i hope they do,

as i said before, it's for the childs best that the law is there, not to censore the parents or whatever (i don't think it's "only in sweden")

There are some VERY strange names over in the US.  If the parents are stupid enough to name their kid something that will get their child picked on, that's their problem.  I'm sure you can name your kid anything over here.

Whatever - it is to me - someone is butting into your personal life.

On the name, if the kid hates it, she can go by her middle name, nick name or once she's old enough, legally change it.  It's not that big of a deal.

well, that's fucked up, but it's only the spelling of the name, he's called "Albin" wich is a normal swedish name : ok:

so because the parents are stupid you make that kid go through that. instead of ... just telling the parents to pick another name.

kids changing name on its own / admistrative papers / ask friends to use nickname ... INSTEAD oOF .... pick another name ...... mmm difficult choice .....


guys need to stop with that Freedom thing. they will go liberal on everything, just in the name " freedom to do anything " not even seeing that it's just plain stupid .....

Do they monitor what the kids wear too - they get teased for that too.  And their hygene, hair style, friends....  the list goes on.  How much can you control these stupid parents?

I spelled my son's name in an uncommon way - thank goodness the name police weren't there to tell me to change it.  He loves the way it's spelled and feels special.

Na, you can name your kid whatever you want over here. Come to think of it there probably is a Metallica.  Also just this year, some man got permission from his wife to name their kid ESPN after the sports network.  I've heard of some others, but none are coming to mind right now.

i think you're exagerating a little bit. maybe parents should give their child whatever name they desire but i know of a case that the parents wanted to name their child 666 (i'm serious), do you think they should be allowed to?

If thats what they want to name their kid, then yes! I don't think it would be a great name, but it isn't up to me.

Whatever someone's name is, if they don't like it, they can legally get it changed to something else. Its no biggie if their rents call them something dumb because when the kid learns what its name is, he or she can just insist to be called by a different name, and then when its old enough, can go to court and get it changed legally to that name.
