Title: Should GNR release I.R.S. as first production single?
Post by: GNRforever10 on March 08, 2007, 02:53:14 AM
I'm a huge fan also and I love all the new songs live and ''Better'' has already took me to some memories and it rocks! But my question is honestly to the public.. I noticed IRS has that old school straight forward rocking vibe just like Welcome To The Jungle, I just want everyones honest opinions if IRS would be the best suited single to bring back that drive and vibe to the mainstream? No doubt Madagascar is gonna be ''HUGE'' and We all love ''BETTER'' here on the radio in Detroit Michigan. Theres just something about IRS that seems to catch the ear like Jungle. Whatever it is I think GNR have so many hits it's unreal. It feels good to have the realest and greatest Rock/Metal band back!!!! Axl is a genius and the greatest frontman ever! but let me know your honest opinion about IRS being the first single?

I have to disagree. Of all the leaks (not counting live), IRS grabbed me the least. Sometimes I'm in the mood, sometimes I'm not, whereas with Better it always grabs my attention and even a song like TWAT, while not my ideal choice for first single, is my favorite new track.

I actually think they could do really well with I.R.S.

It has radio friendly qualities for sure.

Why should the single be anything we've heard anyway? What if they plan making The General the new single?

I do think a single that NOBODY has heard yet that would totally blow our minds would be an excellent way to get some attention.

Better or IRS would both make great 1st singles.  Maybe even the title track.

Maybe even the title track.

Nah, I don't see that. Chinese Democracy is by far the weakest of the new material. Even amongst the leaks and demos it feels like filler. Maybe a final studio version would be that much of an improvement, though. I dunno.

I think Chinese Democracy is a great fuckin song.  It fuckin rocks live and it has all the things a GnR song should have- Killer intro, rythem, solos, different singing styles, climatic ending, and most important- ATTITUDE. Would make a great first single.

I think we should divide the board into teams of the grandiose, Queen-esque Use Your Illusions fans who gravitate towards songs like TWAT and The Blues and then the raw and rowdy Appetite fans who gravitate towards IRS and Chinese Democracy, because GN'R has clearly come to embody two very distinct personalities, and that's aside from just the "new" band :hihi:

IRS would be a killer as a #2 single, but Better is clearly the most catchy song we've heard so from, from the new material.

I think they should go with Better  , then IRS, then something epic like Madagascar or There Was A Time.

I love I.R.S. so i'd have to say "hell yeah" - then again I also love Better and Maddy and Twat...so i'm a lost cause!

please not again. irs is a decent song, but nothing for a single you would wait for 16 years. and it's NOT radio-friendly! first single should be "better", second one something we don't know yet, third or fourth catcher in the rye (which would also be a classic 2nd single)... but there's so much material (is there?) we don't know till now. so we will all wait and see.

Finck`s intro and solo brings tears in my eyes - just fantastic. The lirics are idiotic though, but I`m not into lirics that much, so I don`t care.
What I find disturbing is, that the band has completly butchered this song live (as they have also ruined Madagascar and Better) - I don`t know what were they thinking ???. I hope they`ll improve in this tour!

opposite opinion: i think the studio demo we know has some shitty flanger guitars to it and the electronic stuff doesn't really fit; it doesn't sound consistent with itself, not quite like a rock band. in my opinion it's a bit boring. not much development in the song structure. live - that's true - the song sometimes sounds a bit like a disaster; but when they play it well (and they did, e.g. rock am ring), it's really a cool rocking song. but a song i can live without easily. so trade in irs for something bigger, axl...

no, Try and visualise listening to it through the ears of a 16 year old chick, They are the ones who control whats on the radio, TWAT will work as a single for those reasons.

I judge by what other people (not necessarily huge GNR fans) that I've played the demos for think. Better seems to grab everyone right away.  IRS, not so much.  However this song would probably grow on people.

But I love both :nervous:  ??? :o

I'd say I like IRS least of all the new tracks...If we get a single that is one of the leaks..I'd like Better, twat,or catcher.Something new would be awesome though! :D It'll be awesome anyways :)

Chinese Democracy (the song) doesn't even come close to the other material.  I think it would be a huge mistake to release that song as the 1st single (but i highly doubt that they would).

the way forward for me is to release a song that nobody has heard as the first single.
TWAT would make a great 3rd single in the vain of November Rain.

i think they should have Better be the first single then madagascar (or TWAT what ev its all good) then IRS be the 3rd. After that maybe the blues, chinese democracy, prostitute, and so on but one song i'd like to hear on the radio is Rhiad and the Beduins i think that would be a killer tune played on the radio : ok: :headbanger:

With Better already getting a lot of airplay, it might have not have the same impact as a first single.   For that reason, I think either I.R.S. (one that includes Robin's solo after the first verse) or CD (that sounds like the 2002 radio promo clip we heard) or something we haven't heard yet might be a better way to go.     Not really sure why people are suggesting Prostitute when we haven't heard it yet.

Better would still do great I think.

^ That solo is why i ache for a studio version of IRS, like one leak has robin, the other bucket, what we need is one with both!

Maybe the old version, but the live version does and the studio will be killer!

man.. if they have a studio version of IRS that has both solos on it and it can capture that same energy it has when they play it live, it would be an excellent single.

I love IRS.  I think it definitely rocks the hardest of all the newer material.  I prefer it to "Better", but I'm in the minority on that front.

i dont think any of the leaked tracks should be a single. there has to be better material on the album than what has been leaked. though the leaked tracks are amazing, im sure there are better songs.

I would be really surprised if Better was not the first single.  What reason does anyone have to believe it's not?  It was featured in the leaked HD ad and has been leaked in some form to radio stations across the country.  I guess we'll see, but I love Better as a first single.

Only if they want to be the biggest joke in music. IRS is an ok tune, but it's not single material, especially not for this band and this album. The first single has to be something uptempo, modern, different from any other GNR song, edgy, and still catchy. Better is the only song that fits the bill.

It could be a great single if they play it right. The current live version is pretty bare when it comes to guitars. The demo had some rocking guitars and riffs but the newer version is a bit bluesier and "lighter"...

nah. during the verses the guitars rock much harder on the live version...

Absolutely not.? I.R.S. will be dead in the water if it is released first.?

It is not an attention grabber for the average radio head.

The lirics are idiotic though

Definitely disagree.

IRS is a breakup song that takes a different approach from most.? To me, it captures the feelings of persecution and rage, as well as the desire for oneupmanship you feel in the aftermath.? And it does all this without losing sight of the "How could someone I loved do this to me" sentiments.? Quite singular, really.? Listen to it again.

Anyway, "Better" is by far the most accessible of the leaked songs.? TWAT and CITR probably shouldn't even be singles (though I like them both), especially not "Catcher"...far too out there...guaranteed bomb.

Maybe because a band member (I think it was Tommy) describe the "Prostitute" as the new line up's SCOM.

There will never be another Appetite, so don't bother waiting for that.  It's more fair to compare the "new" songs to modern music, not one of the best albums ever that was released over 20 years ago.

Bring me 10 casual radio fans who say they felt all that at first-listen and I'll tell you I.R.S. will be a mainstream hit.

Until then, it shouldn't be in the running for 1st single, or 2nd for that matter.

If the album version sounds the way they were playing it last year (and it is quite safe to say that it won`t), than Bucket is even bigger genious, than I or anyone else gave him credit for. And if that is the case, than thank god that we have the Boston 2002 soundboard recording.

That couldn't be farther from the truth. Axl is taking the band in the new direction they are going because it is somehow supposed to be "better", or what GNR should have always sounded like in his vision. Modern music aside, if his vision of GNR can't produce "better" music than what already exists in his own back catalog than this project is nothing but a failure and a damn shame.

The people advocating that the new music should be compared to contemporary music are the ones that know everything we have heard thus far falls short of back catalog comparisson, and thus want to avoid that comparisson because it doesn't validate Axl's vision of what the band should have been.

It's like he served us steak for alot of years, and a certain group on here advocates we should then be happy eating hamburger for dinner instead of the steak we used to get, because at least hamburger is better than dog food. It doesn't make any logical sense.

I guess you'd be happy to eat the same steak that you've been eating for the last 20 years?

It's been eaten, digested etc over and over again, but it's still the same steak so it must be really tasty!

I didn't mean to suggest that Chinese Democracy would pale in comparison to Appetite for Destruction.  I simply mean, you can't expect it to sound anywhere near the same.  The Use Your Illusions were FAR different from AFD and they were released only 5 years apart and they even played a few songs from UYI in the AFD era.  We're now 20+ years removed from AFD, you're not gonna hear another Welcome to the Jungle or Paradise City, it's called evolution.  Again, that's not to say you won't hear good music.  I, for one, LOVE all the "new" songs I've heard.  So don't throw me into your collection of people who know that the new album can't match AFD's brilliance.  I've seen the new band twice and think they do quite a stellar job playing the old songs, so I have all the confidence we will eventually hear great music (whenver that may be).
