...i know when my friend saw them in bloomington,IN they didn't even play "Under the Bridge" ...so they aren't shy about shaking up their setlist.  Although i wouldn't expect to hear anything from One Hot Minute for obvious reasons.

Frusciante rocks my world!

Or they will when they're 60 and do a cover of Sinatra's MY WAY...  :(

I watched them last week at MEN Arena, Manchester.  They were fucking amazing, far better than I thought they were going to be.  He sung in tune too, which is the first time I've ever heard!!  Flea's bass was a little on the quiet side though

Cause Finland is closer to central Europe and the cost of moving all their equipment is too much...  :(

No way. In order to get to Finland they need to take the ferry from Sweden.

A lot of bands skip Finland too. Even if they play in Sweden.

Yeah, I was wrong in that but it's the same situation as Greece. It's difficult to move their equipment here. It's not because people don't go to gigs...

I like their earlier stuff they did in the late 80s-early 90s better than what they've come out with more recently. I used to play the Mother's Milk album in my car all the time. I'm really glad that John Frusiante kicked the heroin habit and that he's all healthy now.  [peace]

The chili peppers...great band,Flea is without a doubt one of the best bassist, his stage presence is awesome and funny,Frusciante:great guitarist, the band as a whole awesome, pioneers of a genre.

People always say how one hot minute sucked but I disagree...love that album, one of my favorites.

I don't think they are the best band in the world because the best band in the world is Guns N' Roses. I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers but, I also liked there music from the 90' better. I love the song Under The Bridge. I must say they make cool videos all the time.  8)

1.by the way nice opening track im sure u have heard
2.universally speaking single over seas right now, great song
3.this is the place
4.dosed unreal fuckin song, great shit here on the radio now
5.dont forget me, u have to hear this slow rocker, great shit
6.zephyr song, sure u have heard this one
7.cant stop once again big hit sure u have heard it
8. i could die 4 u, nother great love tune
9.midnight: should b a single its that great
10.throw away your television, chili rocker
11.cabron little latin thing going on great song
12. tear best song on cd should b a single very powerful
13.on mercury weird song but great after some listens
14.minor thing excellent sing along song
15 warm tape very trippy psychadelic sort of number
16 venice queen, great love song

the cd is full of slow melodic beautiful love songs, great traveling cd, u can put it in and not skip a track. stayed in my cd player for 3 weeks str8 b4 i took it out, un fuckin real cd, u are missin out if u dont listen to this great cd. feedback if u have heard it!

Try "Don't forget Me"

Good album and I like it but for some reason It never grew on me as much as Californication.

i agree its like i said not easily digestible, but if u are just comin off a tragic event or mending from alot of pain, dude this cd is one of the greatest for that. also honestly i owned this cd for 6 months before i thought this way, for the first 6 months i liked maybe 6 songs, but i just started listening and reading the lyrics and totally relate and touched by every song, melody, riff, bass part. i guess everyone has their own cup of tea but a whole cd from start to finish hasnt got this deep inside me since the use your illusions and contrary to what people believe i think all 30 illusions songs are great. later!

You are right about the "going through a lot of pain"part!, back then I was going through that and was kinda nostalgic and whenever I hear by the way, it reminds me of that time, in a good way now. Every single cd the peppers have released since one hot minute has left a mark in my life.

i feel ya thats exaclty how i am, now i think back when i hear every song on by the way and smile now.also on californication, its hard to believe they are even the same band that use to play that crazy shit in the 80's, they have came along ass way!

Dark side of the moon is great, but its not the best. I think that the greatesy albums of all time are:

- Aerosmith - Rocks
- Stones - Exile on Main St.
- GNR - Apettite for Destruction
- Led Zeppelin - IV

Speaking of By the Way, I dont like their music, and didnt like their singles, but I have to agree that Tear and Dosed are fuckin awesome, and that the rhythm guitar in Zephyr Song is great too  [ok]

In my opinion.....

This cd fucking blows. I got it for free and still couldn't even stand it. Californication sucked pretty badly too. I've since either traded/sold Californication and By The Way for much much better cds. The Chili Peppers have been all downhill for a while now, and they're not getting any better.

Ive heard about 6 or 7 tracks and i just cant get into it, i dunno maybe its because they are grossly overplayed these days....

I used to like the Chillis before they didnt get laods of airplay because they didnt play to what the audience wanted, they played what the fuck they wanted....

Now though...they are too muck pop-rock(i hate genres) as apposed to Funk-Rock.

Knock me down is like one of their best songs....

Oh well.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have recorded 15 brand new songs while working on their upcoming greatest hits album.

A few of the 15 new tracks will show up on Greatest Hits, due out November 11th. It is unknown what will happen to the rest of the new material. The band worked with producer Rick Rubin on the new tracks.

Bassist Flea said the following:

"We played a wide variety of music arranged into song format that is among the most diverse and dynamic good feeling s*** we have ever done. It is the fastest we have ever recorded so much material ... I can't wait for y'all to hear it."

Credit: Billboard

What do you guys think  will become of the rest of the songs?

I think they should scrap the Greatest Hits deal, see if they can write a few more songs with the groove they have going right now, and then pump out another CD.

I hate when bands put out Greatest Hits albums, especially when they throw on extra tracks assuming that they are going to be special songs from the band.  To me a greatest hits package should come at the end of a band's life and not as some contract obligation or quick buck.

So I hope they decide to release a full length album and tour again.  I'm sure D will have some comments on these songs.

how right u are sky! lol!  damn i cant believe i havent heard this yet, i havent checked the chili peppers site in a couple weeks but im gonna jet over their as soon as i finish posting here.

By the way is incredible!!! i cant understand how anyone wouldnt like that cd. this cd is a true masterpiece where each of the 16 songs are unique and invoke their own emotions within the listener. i guarantee if u are madly in love or truly devastatingly lonely u would listen to by the way with a whole new perspective.  by the way is one of those albums where the singles dont do the entire cd justice. by the way the song in my opinion is the weakest on the entire cd.  check out Tear,Midnight,Dosed, universally speaking, dont forget me, cabron, warm tape etc etc etc, just check out the whole cd, listen to it more than once, it took me a few listens to fully appreciate the entire cd

the chili's in my opinion are a band that are just now hitting their prime, californication and by the way are in myopinion some of the greatest music ever put out by any band, and im not a die hard chili fan like i am say with gnr, bon jovi or prince, californication was the frist chili cd i ever bought, i bought it basically cause i liked scar tissue ok and i had some money that was burning a whole in my pocket and i was depressed, needless to say that cd got me hooked on how great anthony, flea, chad and especially john frusciante are.

i agree totally about the greatest hits idea, i hate it, release a new cd with the 15 songs, if its on par with by the way then that will certainly help my waiting for chinese democracy, maybe thats why im more patient than some, cause with music like what the chili peppers are putting out, bon jovi have an acoustic cd coming out end of the year or early next year, it helps keep my mind off of what axl is doing.

anyone who hasnt heard by the way yet, if u are lonely, sad, depressed, nostalgic over a first or past love, this cd will knock u on your ass!!!!!

That the second half of it, bar one or two songs, is mostly filler.

I used to love that album. But it barely gets played by me anymore.

the good outnumber the bad... and the good are VERY FUCKIN GOOD... but I think By The Way can be played all the way through better than Californication.  Otherside may be my favourite Peppers song.

Great album, not the ULTIMATE or anything tho.  : ok:

heres the way i look at it

bssm had a few classic amazing songs a few good ones and other ones i dont like period
californication had a few classic songs a few good ones a couple average ones and then some that i dont like
by the way didnt really have anything classic on radio but u got 16 great songs, nothin necessarily classic as far as popularity but every song is good thats the difference

their isnt an under the bridge or an otherside or scar tissue on by the way as far as commercial appeal but i think the songs on by the way destroy everything the chili's have ever done

great album, but for me blood sugar sex magic will always be the definitive RHCP album. it is IMO the epitome of 'funk' and so  very very close to flawless.
they have done some stunning work since then, but the album as a complete piece of work is far superior to any thing else from them.

Anyone that hasn't heard the song "Don't Forget Me, by the chili peppers needs to download it now.  Its off the newest cd By The Way.  The song is fucking amazing.  I'm sure a lot of people here can relate to this song.  Even if you're not a big chili peppers fan, which I'm not, you will enjoy this song.  Some of you who have already heard this song, I know will definitely agree with me.  D??   :smoking: :smoking:

Sounds very much like a crawling "Other Side" rewrite, but pretty good nonetheless.  Frusciantes guitars sound great.

I have to check the that song out along with the rest of the cd. Does anyone know if they made a new video for any of the songs on this album yet? They made a lot of great videos.  : ok:

order it man! you will NOT be disappointed, Anthony is right on tune through the whole show as well! I don't understand why people say he's a bad live singer..

the best part of VQ is from where John's acoustic guitar kicks in and through the rest of the song...amazing stuff!

anthony like axl puts out alot of energy, lot or jumpin, movin, etc so its hard for singers like that to be dead on point all the time but he still rocks!

i love john's guitar on "cabron" what an under rated awesome song, this song just reminds me of summer and hanging out with friends cruisin around, just thinking of life and my future, awesome!

I think the Peppers are great. However, I disagree about what most people say on By The Way.

First off, I think the title track and Universally Speaking is great. The 3rd track is okay. Dosed is very weak, sorry everybody but it is. Then, Don't Forget Me is okay as well. Then, after that The Zephyr Song and Can't Stop are two of my favorite songs on here. After That, I Could Die For You and Midnight are just average. Throw Away your Television and Cabron are pretty cool even though Cabron gets annoying. Then, the 12-16 tracks are amazing especially "Warm Tape." Warm Tape is my favorite song on here!

But, for me even though it's not an all the way listen, By The Way is my favorite CD by them.

That is the only RHCP album i have bought (the rest i have copied : ok:)

Its a terrible album

Can't stop and By the way are just about passable - but the rest is so tedious, where they once had attitude its now sappy and dreary. I expect much better in future.

I still listen to the "By The Way" cd and i still love every song, its one of those albums that it helps if u are depressed or feelin down or need a little uplifting.

definitely not a rock party record. but its just so mellow and great

anyway

the chili Peppers are back in the studio

Anthony told a magazine to expect a more rockin uptempo type record

so i cant wait for that!

new Bon Jovi Cd, new Chili Pepper cd and hopefully Chinese Democracy, and maybe a new VR cd
great year for music!

I love the chili peppers. And I like by the way alot, but there is some lame shit on there. It has it's peak moments but was not a worthy follow up to californication which is an amazing album. They need to get some attitude back. A song like "the power of equality" or "suck my kiss" or "sir psycho sexy" (all from blood sugar sex magik) would have made BTW a much better album if it replaced dreary crap like midnight, I could die for you, or cabron.

Hardly... I dont think Finck is a guitar god by any means, but nither is John. That guy has the most annoying tone to his guitar... when I went to see em at The Forum it was apparent that RHCP is Flea and Anthony... I never saw anything special in John.

Especally on Stadium Arcadium... he trys to shred on some of the songs and it sounds terrible.

There hasn't been a popular guitar god in years..

I guess it's just opinion. I really can't stand the tone or the way he plays. But my friend who loves RHCP swears by him..

But guitar god? Do you share that opinion? I think that even if you like him.. its an overstatement.. but tell me otherwise. What do you think?

i dont think there's really been a "guitar god" in a while. i mean a lot of people point to people like joe satriani and steve vai but i really see nothing special in guitarists like them.  john frusciante is probably one of the best guitarists playing, but i wouldn't call him godly like Hendrix or someone like that, because it just doesnt' compare.

What I meant was the sound to it. It definitely sounds like something Finck would write...take TWAT and his November Rain solo for instance.

Under the Bridge is one of the greatest pieces of Guitar music ever written dont forget that. That riff cant be denied.

Have u heard the Riff of the song off S.A. called Snow?

That is one of the best riffs I've heard in quite awhile.

Im not tryin to diss Finck but one thing that really turns me off about the New GNR is the fans...... Chinese Democracy hasnt even been released but u have people on here with the audacity to even try and compare Finck to someone like Slash.

Finck may be Jimi Hendrix on steroids but until I hear Chinese Democracy and until he creates something that stands the test of time, U just cant mention Finck in the same breath as Slash or Frusiciante or anyone else for that matter.

I dont care how well he plays Cover songs

"Better" has potential but still, people get way too far ahead of themselves......... Finck gets an incomplete cause we dont have enough to truly critique him on yet.

John Frusiciante's shredding at the end of "Turn It Again" is fantastic by the way.

His Scar Tissue solo is great, his guitar work in general is great.

Hes a good guitarist.. with some memorible riffs. And yeah I've heard Snow.

I guess I'm just not a fan of his.

And I certainly wouldn't mention him in the same breath as Slash.

As for Finck.. I'm not a hater.. but I'm no fan. His playing seems sloppy to me... and it seems like hes pushing to hard or something... Either way, your right.. We'll find out when CD is released.

Each to his own RHCP fans.. I respect your John love.  :peace:

Just want to let you folks know I saw the chili peppers at lollapolooza this summer and they kicked ass! The music was great, the sound was great and they truly put on a most excellent show! I have the new double CD and actually almost all of the songs are better than Dani California.

You will see an awesome show!

Just to confirm, I wasn't comparing Frusciante and Finck AT ALL.

I was saying, that ONE BLIMMING SOLO, at the end of ONE BLIMMING SONG, sounded VAGUELY like something Finck would play! Jeez

Calm down D, I didn't say he copied him, just said they look alike. And they both look really fuckn cool too : ok:

And I don't think he's trying to copy Slash's style at all either.
All the solos I've heard from Finck, it sounds like he's doing everything to NOT sound like Slash.

WOWWWWWWWW

Great concert last night.

Where do I begin

First off Anthony sounded absolutely fantastic.... I always thought he wasnt too great of a live singer but last night he nailed everything pretty much dead on.

A lot of people got pissed cause they didnt play Under The Bridge but I didnt care, I wish they would've played "Wet Sand" but other than that I was pretty pleased.

Highlights for me were Snow,C'mon Girl, Readymade, Throw away your Television,By The Way, Californication was absolutely amazing....

The whole show was great, lots of energy from the entire band.

Thing is They did about 20 minutes of solos and just like with GNR I am not a big fan of solos no matter how great the musicianship.

The 20 minutes they spent doing that they could've played Otherside,Under The Bridge,Soul To Squeeze, Wet Sand etc

But it was an amazing concert, I got stuck behind a 13 year old kid that I shit u not was at least? 6 Feet 5 and I had a hard time seeing at times which sucked.

Definitely a great concert, they are amazing live!

The Mars Volta opened. On CD they sound decent but live they sound like a trainwreck on top of a plane crash on top of a nuclear explosion

I invision this is what the end of the world will sound like. Their sound guy should be fired immediately. Sounded like an 18 wheeler Rolling down steps with a saxophone over top of it.

Truly horrible live sound.  I dont blame the band cause I know they are extremely talented but their live sound was horrible.

Fuck how i hate this shit Red hot is showing on MTV. "No where to go" or something like that. Red hot lost their spirit after the Californiacation album or way before. I admit hearing on By the way on a african beach on summer years ago gave me a couple of moments bet.. The video looks like a old campaign for Benetton or 7up. If they have to do something so really different or have to show this "i dont give a fuck what we play or make video about"-"we dont want to be a hard rock act" why cant they just give up instead.
Hope that Axl can continue making his blasting rock show for ages, that gives me so mutch more than nonsense lyrics about nothing.

Snow is the song u are talking about and it features one of the best riffs of this 21st century.

If you cant relate to the lyrics of this song perhaps u dont understand what he's singing about or you just arent deep enough to relate to any kind of lyrics that are challenging and meaningful.

Snow is wiping the slate clean on demons that have haunted u in your past......... "running through the fields where all my tracks will be concealed

that is starting anew, the snow covers all the tracks and is fresh and new for more tracks to be made.

I feel bad for some people today who have been dumbed down by shit music for so long they cant appreciate or comprehend great music when it hits them in the face.

Music is subjective, but I find it hard to believe anyone can think this album sucks.

28 songs written in a year for a hugely successful CD that is critically and commercially acclaimed everywhere.

They are also an amazing live band. Their Guitar player, Bass player and Drummer are better than every instrument player in the NEW GNR combined.  U hope Axl can keep his stuff up for ages? He cant keep it up for more than a few months at a time. So why blast the Chili's to try and make GNR look better?

So I don't understand this SHIT thread at all.

They made a video with all their fans, crew and family in it mixed in with a liveshot.

After their "Otherside' and groundbreaking "californication" video, they are allowed to make a simple video every once in awhile.

D, you've got such huge problems with dealing with other people's opinions when they differ from yours, I really don't think you should be posting at message boards at all. I mean, everytime there's something that doesn't fit your point of view, you rant and rave about it like a madman, and usually end up repeating yourself several times. Just read the intelligence-thread in The Jungle, or any thread about Bon Jovi or the Red Hot Chili Peppers to see what I mean.

It's painful to read, that's all.

mrlee, if you think frusciante sucks as a guitar player sorry but you know NOTHING about guitar playing at all, he's easily  one of the most talented guitar players alive today.

the simple fact that he was considered good enough to play for frank zappa shows this. john decided against it due to zappa having a policy on being sober. oh and steve vai got rejected by zappa. so that shows the standards required to get into his band.

anyone like Frusciante's new bald look?

I'm no expert on Zappa, but it sounds like if Steve Vai was rejected by him, it only shows that pure guitar skill wasn't the only factor he was thinking about, and that there were other aspects involved.

well if hes that talented why does he do some of the most boring and, possibly by the guitar solos ive heard from many bands, some of the most simple solos from a band to come from out of the 80s and progress through to now.

because he doesn't feel the need to put self indulgent long winded overly technical guitar solos into a song which requires somthing simple, he plays what is right for the song not just to show off, yet another reason why he's one of the greatest guitarists alive today.

you were saying anyone who likes to do a full blown solo is showing off which is "what makes john so great".

i said doing solos isnt showing off. id much rather hear an epic slash solo, then a crappy 4 note repeated peice of crap for emotion.

a guitar solo should compliment the song, that is what i'm saying, whats the point of tearing off at 100mph for a song that is slow paced and chilled out. there isn't one, it doesn't add anything in particular.

however when it's required john is perfectly capable of tearing off. for example turn it again on stadium arcadium.

I've had Blood sugar Sex Magik for a few weeks and Its a great album don't get me wrong but I thnk its overrated.

I would rank it  3rd, just ahead of Californication.

ByThe Way and Stadium Arcadium are far superior albums.

The hits off BSSM are more memorable than the hits off BTW or SA but I think BTW and SA are way deeper and emotional.

After the hits on BSSM the other songs are ok, nothing extremely special whereas every song on SA and BTW are excellent and really resonate with me.

I guess the reason BSSM is considered the greatest is due to signature songs like Under The Bridge and Give It Away but personally I'll take Snow over it and Under The Bridge is great but Ill take Venice Queen, Desecration Smile and Wet Sand over it.

I think what makes BTW and SA better records is just the growth of Anthony Kiedis. His lyrics are kind of juvenile and his melodies are ok on BSSM whereas on BTW and SA he is so emotional and deep plus his vocals have improved tremendously.

Frusiciante's guitar is also better on SA as he has elevated his playing to a brand new level.

So ranking them I would put:

1. By The Way
2. Stadium ARcadium
3. Blood Sugar Sex Magik
4. Californication.

I've always really enjoyed the non-hits on BSSM.  Apache Rose Peacock, Naked in the Rain, Mellowship Slinky...they're not the hits, but I truly believe that the "filler" of an album is what makes it great or very typical.  Most albums have a hit or two or three, but the filler is complete garbage.  I love GNR's "filler", and the BSSM filler is something I enjoy, as well.  I haven't listened to By the Way, as I kind of lost interest after Californication, when they really started going in a new direction.  But, this USED to be one of my favorite bands, so they're worth another chance...if it doesn't take, I'll always have that Sex Magik!

Title: Re: The Red Hot Chili Peppers thread
Post by: D on December 29, 2006, 03:23:05 AM
there is no filler on By The Way or Stadium Arcadium. All the songs are really good.

The difference is, whereas on BSSM u have Under the Bridge and Give It Away which are considered 10's, On BTW and SA every song is like an 8. I'll take an album where u have 28, 8's over an album where u have a couple 10's and then the rest range anywhere from 5 to 8.

I like the songs that are considered filler on BSSM but they dont compare to the songs that are considered filler on BTW and SA. So as far as singles go, sure I can see why people would prefer BSSM, but when it comes to the non hits, I just think BTW and SA destroy BSSM.

There are really no 10's as far as mainstream

To me there are a bunch of 10's, but Im speaking of the general music public.

wow, you're one of the few people i've seen rank BTW above californication. i'm still not that impressed with by the way, can't really pin point why, but there is something about it that just doesn't click with me. though there are some great tracks on it, venice queen for example which i was fortunate enough to see them play live.  ;D

californications alright though, i love the intro track, its stoned out on the chorus.

I'll take songs like 'the power of equality', 'breaking the girl', 'funky monks', suck my kiss', I could have lied',  'mellowship slinky in B major', 'blood sugar sex magik' and 'naked in the rain' (+ more) over pretty much anything they have done since. that however doesn't mean I don't like their albums since then, I fucking love them! but BSSM is maybe my fav album ever, so it's gonna take a lot to top that one! SA does come pretty close to it though.

I'd take "By the Way" as my favorite, personally. The vocal harmonies and layered songs have really won me over.  BSSM will always be a phenominal album, but I think "By the Way" shows a tremendous amount of growth and complexity.  Given how little I've listened to Arcadium, for me, they may have peaked w/ "By the Way..."

OK, I've now listened to By the Way and Stadium Arcadium.  I can't honestly say that they're bad.  I'm not sure I ever thought they WERE bad.  But they're just not my thing.  I've been listening to BSSM for a long time now, and it's always gonna be the fundamental Chili Peppers album, to me.  A lot of the arguments on here are based on the idea that the band has grown, matured, etc., and that they're musically superior, now.  This may be, but I would have rather seen them become musically superior by making better FUNKY music.  I have nothing against growth, but as your sound changes, so too does your fanbase.  The new stuff lost me.  To me, these new albums all have the same "mood."  Each song may be good (a few I liked a lot, actually), but as albums, they don't take me anywhere different, from song to song.

I dunno.  I'm not saying this to criticize anyone who likes the newer stuff.  If you do, I'm glad you've gotten something out of it.  Not my cup o' tea, though.

I get your point, and feel much the same way about BSSM.  However, when I said the more recent albums are "more complex," etc., I wasn't in any way saying that means they're superior to BSSM...just stating reasons why *I* like BTW.  Sex Magic is the album that really announced the band to the world, and there hasn't been another like it since.

Leave it to Jim Bob Billy Joe to insult someone cause his shitty Hero can try to look like Frusicante but will never be on that level of playing.

Time for u Jim Joe Bob to wake up and realize that Robin isnt Slash or Frusicante, he is a decent rhythm guitarist who butchers solos and is about as original as a Tribute band.

Now to the Chili's

Hillell how am i Nuts for liking BTW and SA better than BSSM?

I think the overall songs are better. lyrically, musically, melodically and emotionally

Sure BSSM is probably a better party/have a great time to record. But Im in the stage of my life where I love songs I truly relate to and get moved by.

BTW, every song does that, SA the same way.

BSSM is entertaining and is a great album but I dont make the same spiritual and emotiona connections to those songs as I do BTW and SA.

I think BSSM has the AFD syndrome. People grew up with that so its like they dont allow anything to be better. I personally like the Illusions better than Appetite, thats just me.

BTW and SA are way more diverse albums, Lyrically, vocally and melodically kiedis is much better. John's guitar has a lot more layers and is more interesting to me. FLea's bass has also just as good, Chads drumming is as good.

Im not dismissing BSSM or denying its greatness but Ill take BTW and SA over it anyday of the week.

Its all in the taste.

BTW is more of the mellow Chili's though, Outside of Cant Stop there isnt much funk.

But SA has tons of funky songs plus the great mellow stuff.

I like Snow better than Give It Away, I like Wet Sand better than Under the Bridge, thats my personal preference.

some fans hold certain songs on a pedestal and never allow anything to compare, Im not like that.

I think the Chili's have plenty of songs better than Under The Bridge and Give It Away.

I think BSSM has the AFD syndrome. People grew up with that so its like they dont allow anything to be better. I personally like the Illusions better than Appetite, thats just me.

I can see why you'd say that, and I think it's partially true.  Some people are resistant to change, and want a band to somehow remake the same thing (be it a masterpiece or something mediocre) again and again.  I don't have a problem with change.  I love the Illusions, too (and Appetite, of course), but there are those who think GNR completely "sold out" with those albums (the folks at sleazegrinder, for example).  I'm not concerned with anyone "selling out," but if you change your sound drastically, it can make for a situation where you lose fans, even if you more than replace their numbers.

For the Chili Peppers, their really early stuff was funky, but maybe not so good as BSSM, where their funk prowess peaked.  They experimented a little on One Hot Minute, and went a little more mellow on Californication.  I liked Californication.  At the time, they hadn't really done anything like that (with the exception of a few tracks on One Hot Minute that were pretty mellow), and it was new, and fresh, and well done.  For me, however, that mood didn't need to be repeated, and the new stuff seems to have gotten more mellow (not BAD...just mellow).  Since my current musical exploration seems to be in metal, this stuff just doesn't really appeal to me right now...a few years from now, who knows?

Its all in the taste.

Exactly.

I can understand why some Chili fans wouldnt be huge fans of BTW as it has absolutely very little funk at all on it.

To me Stadium Arcadium is the best of BSSM mixed with the best of Californication and BTW. there is a little something for everyone on it.

BTW is my favorite cause it came around at the exact moment in my life where it spoke to  me most.

I had lost a fiancee, a child, was miserable and that album gave me hope and spoke to me and helped me heal. so to me it is damn hard to get better than that album just due to the personal meaning it has for me.

Breaking The GIrl and I could have lied are great slower songs, but arent as good as  Venice Queen, Tear, Dont FOrget me, Dosed and Zephyr in my opinion.

THen on STadium Arcadium I like SA,Slow Cheetah,Wet Sand,DesecrationSmile, Hard To COncentrate,She Looks to Me, IF and Death Of a Martian better than Breaking and I could have lied.

Sometimes that's all it takes.  This is why I try to not criticize people for what they listen to (though I do occasionally rant about the current state of music).  You never know WHY someone likes what they like.  Sometimes it's about memories, good or bad, and other times it's just music that speaks to your soul.  RHCP has managed to stay successful through many trends (fads) in music, and I believe it's because they're talented.  Other artists stay current by peddling music that isn't up to what they used to produce (I'm lookin' at you, Jon).  I think that's why many of us are on this board.  We realize it isn't about putting out product for the sake of putting it out.  I can tolerate a decade long wait, because I know when I finally get my copy of Chinese Democracy, it won't have been put out for the hell of it or because Axl needed the $$$.  If you make good music because you love to, that's good enough for me.

the funk backbone of BSSM, the more mellow style of cali and the more complex layered style of BTW

added to the fact then john had decided to go with the hendrix style of recording and turned the studio into a giant guitar effect.

i can't understand a guitarist not loving this album.

to quote europe's biggest guitar mag. "guitar players are not going to be dissapointed with this album"

there were 2 issues with big john interviews in a while back, i seem to have lost one of them, but there's alot of interesting stuff said in the second one. also it's got mr brownstone, can i play with madness and some other songs i couldn't care less about tabbed in it.

Finck is awesome.
Frusciante is awesome.

They are both guitarists who draw on emotion for playing guitar solos instead of just playing quickly.  We already know about Frusciante, now go look up Robin's solo from 12-19-06 at the Gibson Ampitheatre.  AMAZING shit.

This board was made for Finck?

I thought it was for Guns N Roses or Axl?

Finck is good but He hasnt even released a fucking album yet, So  cant put him in a class with Slash and John Frusiciante, guys who have fucking DONE IT. Finck hasnt done shit yet.

ONce CD comes out, if it kicks ass, u can then mention his name but until then U CANT cause u have no criteria but he playing a bunch of fuckin cover songs.

He has to do more than "Better" to be anywhere near the same level of a legend as Frusiciante or Slash.

I use to be a HUGE FAN of the New GNR band, but posters like Jim Bob and others make it hard for me to support this band cause of their ignorance.

When someone can claim Bumble foot is better than Slash, I just shake my head and log off the fuckin computer cause that kind of ignorance cannot even be responded to.

The band only need ron and richard.

back onto chilli peppers, i dont think finck, a person who specialised in industrial styled guitar playing can be compared to a funk guitarist.

Strip My Mind is a perfect example of this, the emotion behind those guitar parts for me are reminiscent of Robin's parts on Better or TWAT.

Im not suprised most of the B Sides are only "ok" when The Chilis tryed to put only the essential tracks on the final product, from the bulk of material they had initially recorded for this project.

LOL

No kidding, yeah I got it and the Tab book for Stadium Arcadium for Christmas.

Let me clarify some of my Robin Finck Bashing.............

I think Finck has potential to be an excellent guitarist, its just I get pissed when people want to annoint Robin all these accolades before he does anything.

Let CD come out, lets see what he has got, lets see how well his riffs and solos stand the test of time, THEN and ONLY then can u put him in that category of Slash, John Frusciante etc.

Slash and Frusciante have cemented their legacies in musical history, Robin has not done that yet.

So I only get pissed when people bestow this LEGEND title on Robin when he hasnt done anything yet.

This is no way means that I think he sucks or isnt great, but he has to earn the praise and honors, u dont just get them because u play with Axl Rose.

This is truly amazing for me.  Appetite For Destruction has been my #1 album since 1987.  I can't say what I would rank #2.  Motely Crue's Too Fast For Love, ACDC's Back In Black, Metallica's Kill 'Em All, Kill Cheerleader's All Hail, several Led Zeppelin albums, Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.....could go on and on but can't give a definitive #2.

Stadium Arcadium is heading that way....to my definitive #2 of all time. It is one of the greatest guitar albums ever. I just can't believe this. I would never have bought it had it not been for my girlfriend wanting it. THe Peppers were okey but the funk stuff was never my thing.

This album has 28 SONGS.

If u only listened once u cant make that statement.

It took me about 3 listens all the way through before songs started poppin out and getting in my brain.

So please listen more than once.

U gotta really listen to this album, its not one of those u can just pop in and kind of half pay attention to.

same with most bands, Listen to the leaks from CD, can u honestly say those songs "ROCK" like old GNR? Artists grow up, mature and just start writing different material, I think it would be fake for any artist to try to act and write at 40 like they do at 25.

Personal Growth and development kind of change your style. I dont think there is anything wrong with it though.

Im gonna go ahead and say this.

Anthony Kiedis is an extremely UNDERrated vocalist.

Sure he may not be able to shatter glass with his vocals and he doesnt have a ton of range, but his vocal melodies, emotion and lyrics are amazing.

I dont know the criteria people judge most vocalists on, but Anthony has a voice that I can listen to for hours and hours and never tire of w here as the so called "Great" singers annoy me within 10 minutes.

B Side from Stadium ARcadium that is awesome is a song called "Funny Face" Its a Reggae influenced B Side from the Snow Single.

So far 30 songs from the Stadium Arcadium sessions are excellent in my opinion. : ok:

I saw them last night at The Allstate, and I was blown away. I saw them 4 years ago and thought they were good, but this blew that out of the water. John Frusiante tore that place up. I know he gets credit as being a "new" guitar god and whatnot, but I think he should be in the same breath as any great guitar player. Even moreso live, he just fucking rocked.

They opened with Can't Stop and went into some newer stuff. They did alot of extened jams in the songs which was awesome. They palyed a few oldies like Blood Sugar Sex Magic and a bigger suprise was Me and My Friends, which Flea introduced with a wierd strory about being in Mexico 20 years ago. They played mostly By the Way and Stadium Arcadium tracks, except for the two I mentioned and Give It Away, Scar Tissure and Californication. The Crowd was TOTALLY jacked, which makes a concert that much better.

At then end of Give it away, ANthony said goodnight, and the other 3 did like a badass 10 minute outro jam.

Ive seen tons of shows from The Stones(5xs) to Petty to GNR to radio station fests to indie rock bands in small clubs to Lollapaloozas to Farm Aids.. probably 50-100 shows with hundereds of bands in probably 30 different venues....and I can instantly say this was one of the top 5 shows I have seen...it was fucking phenominal

Correction:

All the Bsides are now excellent.

First time through I didnt care too much for them but now they are all awesome.

Funny face, Ill Be your Domino, Mercy Mercy, Million miles of water, Lately and A Certain Someone are all great songs that I wish would've made it on Stadium ARcadium. They should've had a 3 disc set.

D, how are you getting the B-sides??

Is there any other way to get them other than having to buy the singles, and different versions of each single at that with diff. B-Sides.

This album is now one of my all-time favorites right up their with AFD!

Frusciante is now my #2 fav guitartist behind only Slash.

i just think that the guitar in the beginning sounds almost the same just different speed or how to say.. or maybe even the speed it the same but the drums on MYFB makes it sound faster.. listen to just the intros..

(now i could be wrong of course, but i've thought about this for a while ???)

The last two/three albums were soft pop rubbish and nothing like their old output? They've basically lost their fire and seem to do paint by numbers music, much like the Foo Fighters.

An artist makes music for people to hear - JF was able to do that in the Peppers. Without them he's just going to fade into history.

I don't agree on your definition of an artist, but alright that's your opinion, sorry for getting off topic but what's your opinion on Tom Morello and Zach de la Rocha? they could both gain far more attention if they'd just be RATM and record music as that band and tour but they're doing their own things instead (the nightwatchman and one day as a lion)

Actually an artist makes music because he/she has to, its a part of them and they cant stop it. A true artist does not care whether their work is ever seen or heard by anyone but themselves, it just needs to be.

Frusciante leaving was a long time coming; the disparity between the Chili Peppers stuff and John's solo stuff made that plainly obvious.  Here's to hoping that this means more years like 2004-2005 when JF released 6 albums!

I totally agree with you here. By The Way is totally underrated album and is often judged only by it's title track. If you go deeper and really listen to the music, you'll get it. Venice Queen, pure magic to me. And I also have great memories from the time I started liking this album :P And I could say the same about SA too, and it's also pretty deep and emotional album. and the song of all songs "Don't Forget Me" FUCK what an amazing song.

Which albums do you like, and would you like them to go back to their old ways/the albums you thought they were at their peak?

And if they did so, would you say they stopped growing and they stopped trying new things?

This is a dangerous game to play.  As bands get older, they can't win with anyone as time goes by.

BSSM is a good CD but I much prefer ,BTW and SA to it.

Unless u are taking about the Hillel super funk, high energy stuff form the 80's, they have been showing a softer side for a very long time.

Breaking The Girl, I could have Lied, Soul To Squeeze, My Friends...

Im not a fan of One Hot Minute

I like some of the Hilell era stuff, but I am a Frusciante guy, his albums are great, rest I am not a super fan of.

Im gladly take songs like Road Trippin,Porcelain, Dosed, Don't forget me, Venice Queen, Desecration Smile, and Wet Sand over Suck My Kiss, Give it Away etc

Shitty part is, bands get shit for changing it up but also get shit if they are "ACDC" and do the same shit.. u can't win.

i like RHCP when they have balls. Mothers Milk and Blood sugar are my favorites. They mix the funk right with the balls without bein OTT like the 80s stuff, and being ridiculously pop like late 90s and this decade.

Title: Re: The Red Hot Chili Peppers thread

Even though they have taken a more popish direction with their music since BSSM, it's still pretty unique and I wouldn't call it mainstream or ridiculously pop. They're still doing their own thing.. everything changes and developes in this life.

Yeah that's true, and I wasn't saying you're wrong or anything. I only think it's great that bands develop their style instead of forcing themselves to do the same album over and over again. It gives the fans out there more variety and so on. But sometimes the change is too much for some people, but that's a risk the band should take if they feel like doing something new and different. Aerosmith is also a great example of variety..

funny part is, its as if people haven't even listened to the records

Stadium arcadium has plenty of the kick ass ballsy funk or rock

Charlie, C'mon Girl,Hump Da Bump, Tell Me Baby, Readymade,Storm in a Teacup, Turn it Again which features one of the best Frusciante guitar solos ever imo.

Plus, the "Snow" guitar riff is one of the greatest riffs of the 21st century

I also challenge anybody to listen to Wet Sand,Hey and Desecration Smile in succession and not like it.

soccer moms my ass...who's main man..?

in case people haven't heard, Josh Klinghoffer is the new guitarist.
he's one of Frusciantes closest friends, and have played on almost all of John's solo albums as a guitarist or a drummer, plus backup vocals.
he's also played guitar with PJ Harvey and a bunch of others that I can't recall right now.
he is sort of an understudy of John, like John was of Hillel Slovak, the original guitarist of RHCP.

I dunno about you folks, but I'm fucking excited! they've been in the studio since Octoberish recording new stuff.

If he's not happy with playing with RHCP, why should he do it then? There's no point. And his solo stuff is what he is, that's his way of expressing himself. He doesn't make the music to make some money or to be in the spotlight, he does it 'cause he enjoys doing it and he's happy doing it. Doing his own thing. I think everyone should respect that and realise that it's not always about the fans and what they want. And for the record, I think John has given his fans a great deal of great music and he still continues giving it. He has some great unique albums out there..

I heard they hit the studio recently but don't know if it's true. Also according to Chad, Josh is going to do some piano and vocals for the album.. Good friend of the Chilis and especially John's. He played with them live during their last tour and you can hear him on John's solo albums playing guitar, bass, drums, keyboards etc. If you're interested, listen to some of those albums on Spotify or YouTube.. for example these two where Josh sings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_bOfPi7Grs / http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt5CrFbh_-E

Title: Re: The Red Hot Chili Peppers thread
Post by: kaasupoltin on July 21, 2010, 03:22:40 PM
Yeah, Dave isn't a bad guitarist but he didn't really bring anything new to the band. I think Hillel was great and John brought his own unique style that can be heard especially on Blood Sugar and Stadium Arcadium. I think Josh is going to be awesome though, at least what I've heard from him so far is pretty amazing. I hope they still keep developing their sound/style and don't go with the easiest and safest way.

I'm glad they picked Josh instead of someone who's already a big name in the music industry.

Title: Re: The Red Hot Chili Peppers thread
Post by: mrlee on July 21, 2010, 05:56:20 PM
After listening to more stuff. I think Hillel was the better of the two.

Mothers Milk was mainly fruscante trying to be hillel...which is why its still rocking like the peppers hould be. Blood Sugar, John started to bring in some of his mellow edge but the energy was still there.

After that. MMEHHHHHH. Different band totally, Fruscante may aswell of been a different guitarist.

Different doesn't mean worse. I think what John (and to be honest, Chad too) brought with him was the ability to do something more and move forward as a band and that's what they did. That's what every band should do. In my opinion the best lineup was Anthony-Flea-John-Chad. That's the most talented and versatile they've been. Some say they went all commercial after Blood Sugar, but I really don't agree. These people think that all they are these days is Hump De Bump and Tell Me Baby, when they should be listening to songs like Charlie, Wet Sand, Hard To Concentrate, Desecration Smile etc. to see what RHCP is really about.

ive given the later albums a go. i only find i like the odd song. its just far too mellow or poppy for me.

I liked the raw funk edge mixed with rock and metal that the band used to do. N for me thats their pull point. Their other stuff doesnt interest me. I appreciate them trying other things, but they didnt go in a direction that appeals to me personally.

Californication was the last album I really enjoyed by them eventhough it's one of the worst offenders of the loudness wars.

to me it's kinda the other way around, i like a lot of the funky/rocky songs but for me it's in the mellow sweet songs where they shine the most for me

No, I think John is gone for good this time.  The upside is that John had been "mentoring" Josh Klinghoffer to be his replacement for the last 5 or so years, so if anyone can take over adequately, it would be Josh.

I just hope they go back to funkier music. Rather than the poppy rock style theyve done the last 10 years...it seriously is lacking in the funk.

Thats why alot of pop artists right now are doing disco influenced tracks....

Then again im talking from the British market perspective.

As for a genre being dead. Well hey, the Peppers formed in a decade when funk was dead. So there is no difference, only this time they already have a huge fanbase. Whoever gave a fuck about whats "in" anyway.

People tell me glam is dead all the time yet more n more bands come out playing it giving us new releases. Whether you choose to listen or not is your choice. But the option is there. I want some funk.

My band plays funk. So fuck what people say!

funk never dies, just like rock.

delay on the album btw, will be out earliest in late 2011. as i see it, probably in 2012.
good thing is that the delay is because they have their creative juices running so high that they can't stop creating and recording songs.
they will have a massive amount of tunes to pick from for their next album.

Red Hot Chili Peppers I'm With You Official Press Release

By Paul Cashmere

Yesterday, Red Hot Hot Peppers bass player Flea announced the title of the next album for the band would be called 'I'm With You'. Today, the band's publicist has released the first official press release about the record.

Instead of dissecting the announce, Undercover would rather break the rules and give you all the news.

So here it is, the first official presser for the Red Hot Chili Peppers 'I'm With You' album:

June 6, 2011 - Los Angeles - Multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers will release their upcoming tenth studio album, I'm With You, on Warner Bros. Records on August 30th, 2011. Recorded at East West In Los Angeles and Shangri-la in Malibu, CA, I'm With You was produced by Rick Rubin, who has produced the band's previous five albums, 2006'sStadium Arcadium, 2002's By The Way, 1999's Californication, 1995's One Hot Minute, and 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The album was mixed by Andrew Scheps and Greg Fidelman.

I'm With You is the band's first new album since the two-set Stadium Arcadium, which debuted at Number One in 28 countries around the world, including the U.S.- their first Number One album on the Los Angeles quartet's home turf. The album spawned three Number One Modern Rock hits: "Dani California" (which spent 14 weeks at No. 1 and is one of three songs in the history of Billboard's Alternative Chart to debut at No. 1), "Tell Me Baby," and "Snow (Hey Oh)." To support Stadium Arcadium, the Chili Peppers played to millions of fans around the world throughout 2007, including sold-out arena tours of Europe and North America, appearances at the Fuji Festival in Japan and Live Earth in London, and headlining slots at Lollapalooza in Chicago, and the Leeds and Reading Festivals in the U.K.

One of the most successful acts in rock history, Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 60 million albums, including five multi-platinum LPs, and won six Grammy Awards, including "Best Rock Album" for Stadium Arcadium, "Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group" for "Dani California, "Best Rock Song" for "Scar Tissue," and "Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal" for "Give It Away." The band holds the record for the most No. 1 singles of all time at Alternative radio, a total of 11, and a combined 81 weeks at No. 1.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, will headline at Japan's Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka on August 13th and in Tokyo on August 14th. They will also headline at the Rock in Rio Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on September 24th.

The album came in mail this morning.. put it on my iPhone and went running.. I was blown away.

It's like with every RHCP album before. You hear the first single which you think is a great basic track. Then you hear the album and you realise once again, just how deep this band can be! The sound, the riffs, the bass lines, the vocals, Chad on drums.. it's definitely RHCP, but yet again, it's something NEW! Something they haven't done before, but at the same time it's very Red Hot Chili Peppers. You know what I'm saying? They can reinvent themselves over and over again without losing themselves.

Half way through the album I realised that I have no idea how the next song is going to sound.. that's pretty rare these days. There are songs when you think like "this could have been on By The Way" or "this has the same feeling as Stadium Arcadium".. but then again, the album is completely different from those albums. It's like magic of some kind.

My favourites this far:
- Police Station, very beautiful
- Even You Brutus, one of the coolest RHCP songs ever
- Brendan's Death Song, gotta love the chorus and Chad's drumming!

Go get the album as soon as possible!

It's incredible! You won't be disappointed. It seems these days you keep waiting to hear a good new song out there and at times it's a struggle. Then RHCP hits you with 14 of 'em on one album.

No disrespect to the band whose board we post on.. but IMO RHCP are the greatest band in the world by far since Californication album.   That, By The Way and SA changed my life and its rare an album does that but its like every Chili Pepper album does that.

Im gonna buy it on Itunes at midnight Sunday, then go to the store and buy the physical copy when i get off work.

yeah didn't like the last one either, maybe it's the lack of John Fruciante?  Come to think of it, the only Chili Peppers albums I don't care for since BSSM came out are "One Hot Minute" and the last one.  Both of those albums have different guitar players.

Yeah, I think it is pretty common actually. I don't dislike One Hot Minute, but to me it's the most "uniteresting" album they have released. I'm With You on the other hand is interesting, I think they just did what they felt like doing even though they knew some fans would not like it. But that's pretty much what they've been doing since they started :hihi:

Sure you can hear the lack of Frusciante, he is just too unique to be replaced. The style and the sound... and he's a great writer too.

But talking about this last single, I really dig it! The piano in the background is a nice touch. I just hope they will finally mix the album well..
